national -prosperity, bringing thousands of oper

the saddening evidences of grievous financial

a free trader. lie is tocrregardful of the inter

always recognised and , taught the 'duty of gov
ernment to protect its -domestic industry.; to de-
Nelope its hidden resources of wealth, to diver
'si'fy the occupations, and thus increase the coin;
forte and enlarge the profits of its citizens.- For
proof .of this; we confidently appeal as well to
Mr. Wilmot's past speeches as to the admirable,
graceful and patriotic letter he has recenty writ
tea ad this subject. Mr. Wilmot thinks and
teals like a Pennsylvanian. On the contrary,
Mr. Packer Wore the tree-trade policy to which
.
the Cfnehinall platform pledges the Democratic
,pitrtrj,in thecoirrention he moved the adoption
Pr - AO - platform without the crossing of a t, or
rettlait of an i, and thus placed himself in
Itherinki of the-iree-traders, as the slavehold
i4 eMate-re of the Democracy demanded. His
lection would justly be considered proof that
Abe people - of 'Pennsylvania approved the radi
cal doctrines which he professes.'
:1b would place the stigma of an honest peo
pie's reprobation' upon the Democratic party for
Its pandering to a hierarchy, which' is the in
hidlous foe tot only of American liberty, but of
foe which strikes fatally at man's
s indefendeneedf thought and action, by making
hinitheisrave of a priest add a church. It would
beeesitePted as , a'challenge, defying the papacy
to Wade its cherished purposes—the exclusion
Of the Bible from the common schools, and the
destruedion of the common school system itself.
It would reduce the power, and check the ad
vaucter of' that foreign priestly influence, which,
ilueitigh the aid of "Molly Maguire," and other
like associations, aims to, and in some districts
does actually, control the nominations of the
i)emocratio party, and thus place in responsible
,and influential position its faithful andreliable -
:nation's. And it would tend to build up that
intense nationality of feeling which is the die- I
-late alike of an ardent patriotism and an educe. I
ted intelligence.
It wield furthermore be a stop towards the
relief of the politics of the Stole from that slave
holding dictation which, not content with re
pealing portions of the act of 1547—passed
unanimously by the Legislature and approved'
by Gov. Shank—has proclaimed its purpose,
should Mr. Packer be elected, with a co-opera
ting majority in each House, to RE-ENTABLINH

as; end which, besides its degradation of the
laboring while man to a low level, numbe
among ita undeveloped enormities the revival of
the slave trade, and the overrunning of the
whole country, with stolen and degraded Afri
cans. It would act es a rebuke to the baseness
ofa degenerate Pennsylvanian, now President,
in declaring, (as though it could be true') that
'the =tidal constitution carries slavery with it,
and'guilds it, at least in the Territories, against
the action of the local legislature—a recently
assumed ground, totally atvariance with .!Squat,
ter.. Sovereignty" as lidely Irtufastiad by the
: Northern Democracy, directly in antagonism to
the resolve of the Democratic State Conrention
'orkedusylvania in 1849, and inconsistent with
erarrpreviotts act, vote, speech and profession
of Mr. Buehanan himself, and every Northern
andßouthern statesman of all parties—Mr. Gal
loon alone excepted, whose monomania-isms,
when uttered in the Senate were thought un
worthy of consideration, and by those who did
not properly appreciate the Democratic leaders,
rirere not likely to be ever accepted by
large party.
Mr. Wilmot's election would be considered as
declaration by the people of Pennsylvania of
a preference of free It:stip:Mons over slave in
stitutions—of a preference for white labor over
negro labor—of a preference for freedom over
slavery. It is alleged that a state election can
Mere no connection with such issues. But the
result of this State election will strengthen one of
:the two-parties—either the Republican, with its
barmier of fgecdom for the territories,' or,the
.Democratic, under which the slaveholders of the
Country are, to a man, gathering, with its sym
pathy for that system of labor which, although
it. 'wakens the nation, strengthens the hold of
Democrats on office and power. If Mr. Packerbe
elected, slavery will hail it as a triumph. Thus
they have hailed previous Democratic(!) victories
In Pennsylvania.' if Mr. Wilmot be elected, sla
ting , will mourn, while freemen, North and
'Skpali, who believe that government should threw
its influence in favor of free institutions, not
olave, wiii rejoice, and hail the event as one of the
Most. auspicious of the day. We ask the con
saltation' people of Pennsylvania, in view of
this truth, where their vote and influence
should be cast.
Mr. Millward's election would break the
unity of the Canal Board; would introduce 01
Mitehneeded check ihto the Canal Office ; would
mike more difficult the peculation which is
known to exist there, and which has existed for
many years ;would thus save the Commonwealth
large : sums of money, and greatly promote the
Thbilegood. There are thousands of citizens
who believe that the safety of the people lies in
diveled'interest. These gentlemen will sup
port Mr. Miliward, for this most valid of reasons.
Messrs.. Lewis and Veech arc, as lawyers,
- fully the equals of Messrs. Strong and Thompson,
while in the leading essentials of a Judge, each
of the former two is greatly above the last nam
ed butividual. Both of the Democratic condi
dated voted in 1847 for the Wilmot Proviso; both
have recanted, and are now numbered among
the !slave propaganda. They are converts to the
nevi doctrines shivery has introduced Into our
polity; and they completely ignore thoie human•
uipg, sentiehents which it was once'an honor for
&public man to profess and carry out. Should,
they he elected to the Supreme Bench, the judi,
vial decisions of Pennsyliania will, in due sea
po, .finite reach the - low level on which the
-Democratic" politicians already stand. From
such a debasement every Penney Iranian should
pray for a deliverance. . , Let the old doctrine of
stiteery's dependence upon tared law forever
prevail;- and let not our courts, yielding, as
others- hare done, to Federal dictation, ever
abandon the ancient landmarks set by a Tilgh
man; at Shippen, and a Gibson.
-, To these considerations the committee might
iadd More personal ones. They might appeal to
Old People tribe aware of making, Governor of
the Commonwealth a gentlentao who has been
'alibis life not only . = office holder, but an of
fice helder connected with our corrupted and
