We are pained to fuel that some of ' the New

that one at least of our bank officers has refused
compliance with these instructions, and notified
his correspondent that if they were persisted in,
the account must be withdrawn. We trust that
all oar bank officers will adopt this high-toned
course, if only as a small measure of justice to
those whose troubles have been increased by the
bank auspensione.—Plolsr. Press.
lr is said that Bennett, of the New York flee
.old, loses 875,000 by the failure of Peruse &
Brooks, who were his bankers. "Old Potosi"
has been striving long and hard to create a panic
—now he has his reward: just as the Manhat
tan Bank, which created the revulsion of 1837,
was one of the institutions most thoroughly
ruined by it.
Srserasioas or Bnonsats.—There was a gen
eral ovpectation yesterday morning that "semi.-
thing would turn up" during the day to show
how far our own Brokers would be affected by
the news of the Bank suspensions in Philadul
phia slid Baltimore. Not that there was any
doubt of the ultimate soundness of every house
in the city, but it was thought probable that the
news (nun abroad might throw such an amount
of demands suddenly upon some of them as to
compel a temporary suspension.
This expectation was realized. At an early
boor, Darby . St Barksdale, who have paid out
during t he past three weeks about SSOO,OIIO, and
of whose full responsibilityno one in the commu
nity entertains a doubt, felt it due to'themselves
and their friends to suspend. A large amount of
aid was proffered to them by their Intuits before
this resolve was made, to save them from closing
their doors, but Mr. Barksdale, the acting part
ner here, (Mr. Darby being absent,) declined it.
saying ho would not risk the disappointment of
such [Wends, in case such sum should not be re
paid as promptly as might be desired. lie
therefore closed his house for the present.
John .1. Anderson S Co. shortly alter did the
swim. This house has, it is understood, made
considerable advances on account of the city and
county of St. Louis, and that it needs to be re-
imbursed from that source, and but for this cir
cumstance would not have suspended at all. As
it is, the friends of John J. Anderson & Co. did
not think there was occasion for them to sus
pend yesterday but the head of the house
thought that the wiser course.—St. Louis had.,

A NERVOUS TRAVELLER AND A Oliver BAG.
GAGE MASTRE.-1 recently took a trip West,
and while passing over the E. & H. R. 8., being
fond of "the weed," had taken my seat in the
baggage car for the purpose of indulging in a
"Havana," when a nervous individual entered the
=and commenced overhauling the baggage.—
The baggage master, after eyeing him a moment,
accosted him rather gruffly with
"What's wanting, sir?"
"I am looking for my trunk," demurely an
swered the nervous man.
will take care of your trunk, sir, that is
my business," retorted 11. M.
••Oh, I am aware of that, air, but r would a!-
ways much rather keep my trunk under my
eye!'
"Well then, air, you should have •been born
au elephant, and then you could base your
trunk under your eye the whole time:"
The nervous man suddenly vamosed.
A FINANCIAL CRISIS is said to exist in Ger
many. A letter from Vienna; dated Sept. 7, says:
—`• Last week several failures occurred here, rui
well ns at Prague and Pesti,. The most import
ant of these is a hardware establishment, with
liabilities amounting to several hundred thou
sand guilders, and having extenAive connections
abroad.. There never was a time—not except- .
ing the years 1847 and 1848—when the failures
were so numerous as now; every day one or.
more suspensions are announced. The worst is,
an early improvement cannot be expected. The
Bank of Credit has limited its transactions, and
refeees all applications for new loans, •giving as
the reason, Wait is not in a condition to ex
pand its business." If some of our financiers
were in Germany they would preach, in the face
of the facts calling for contraction, that it was
necessary for the bank to expand its business,
tO,save the community from disaster.

The Sepoy
The Edinburg . Witneis publishes.s letter from
the Rec. Dr. Duff, a missionary in-India, which is
full of terrible interest. This letter bears date,
Calcutta, July 7, to July Maud our readers who
feel an interest in the American and in Chris-
tian missions generally will not fail to read the
annexed extracts from it with prayers for the
men who have risked their all, even life itself in
their labor of love in thy t disiantland. Of Dena
Sahib he gives the following account:
On Sunday, the 28th June, this man, with
consummate hypocrisy, of his own accord, sent
overtures to our beleagueredeountrymen--then
bereft of their heroic chieftain—swearing,
•upon the water of the Ganges, and all the oaths
most binding on a Hindoo, that if the garrison
would trust to him and surrender, the lives of
all would be spared, and they shouldbe put into
boats and sent down to. Allahabad." Under the
influence of some infatuating blindness, the
garrison that might have possibly held outAill
relief arrived was induced to trustin these oily
professions, and surrender. Agreeably ; to the
terms of the treaty, they were put into boats,
with provisions and other necessaries arid com
forts. But mark the conduct of the perfidious
fiend in human form! No sooner had the heats
reached the middle of the river, than their sworn
protector gave himself, a preconcerted signal,
and guns, which had been laid for the purpose,
were opened upon them from the Cawnpore bank!
yea, and when our poor wretched countrymen
tried to escape, by crossing to the Oudo side of
the river, they found that arrangements had
been made there too for their reception; for
there, such of them as were enabled to land
were instantaneously cut to pieces by cavalry
that had been sent across for the purpose. In
this way nearly the whole party, according to
the Government report—consisting of several
hundreds, mostly helpless women and children;
—were destroyed, such of the women and chil
dren as were not killed being reserved proba
bly as hostages. Only one boat escaped, which
was pursued for miles: and when overtaken, all
in it were taken back to the camp , of the muti
neers, and there shot, or cruelly torn to pieces!
In illustration of the cunning and duplicity of
the native Asiatics, Dr. Duff gives the follow
ing :
The case of the 6th Native Infantry at 'Alla
hnbad is thus recorded, as the result of anther'.
tic information, by oae'of our Calcuttajdrurnals:
It appears that after the officers of the regiment.
first left the lines,a subadar paid a visit to Lieu
tenant blaines the interpreter, and erpoatidated
with him, in the name of the regiment, upon
the want of confidence they had displayed,
'Come to us,' he said, 'we are faithful, we love
our good master, we will protect you, but it
gives us pain to see you suspect us.' Moines,
.and his wife, who was present at the interview,
were melted even to tears, at the simple elo
quence of the man whom they had insulted, as
well MR his fellows, by their unworthy suspicions.
There was but one course left to take--to return
to the bosom of the regiment, to throw them
selves upon the hearts the men—and this
course they resolved to adopt, persuading the
other officers of the regiment and their families
to follow their example."
When they returned to the regiment, the scene
which awaited them touched the hearts of all
present. The men whom they had suspected,
in a moment of narrow-minded apprehension,
were found drawn up to receive their officers,
and welcomed them with three hearty English
cheers. The native officers, enable to control
their feelings, which swelled high. and sent
their warm Asiatic blood coursing in their veins,
iu defiance of all cold rules. of decorum and
hollow military observances—gave vent to the
natural and simple emotions of their brave
hearts. They flung themselves round the necks
of their European officers who bad so generous
ly atoned for their cruel suspicions, and kissed
them ou both cheeks. The reconciliation was
complete, confidence was happily restored, and
that same night the native officers and men
rose and proceeded to the work of massacre."
This is We regiment which some time before
had possessed such extra zeal and loyalty, that
they enthusiastically plead to be allowed to pro
ceed to Delhi to punish the mutineers, of whose
treacherous and cruel conduct they spoke with
vehement detestation. In order still further to
prove their loyalty, they again and again de
livered up spies who had come to spread -sedi-
Lion amongst them. ; So completely was the ve
racity of their professions confided in, Lord
Canning sent them a special letter of thanks.
which was publicly read to them on parade on a
certain evening at six o'clock; and the reading
of which elicited' three hearty cheers for .the
Company. On that very evening at nine O'clock,
a gentleman on the ramparts of the fort, ob
serving a rocket go up, and said to the magis
trate near him, "What's (hair "Oh," said the
latter, "it is only a marriage." lip, lo! another
rocket followed. It was the signal agreed on '
by the "staunch and loyal 6th;" when the mess
house was attacked and seventeen, out of the
twenty unarmed, confiding officers assembled
there, were inshmtaneously butchered in cold
blood—their shrieks being heard at a consider
able distance. The colonel of the regiment, who
up to the last, laughed at the idea of precaution
ary measures being necessary, and who would
not believe that his men would mutiny until
the balls flew through his hat and sleeves, con
trived to escape to the fort with his life. Then
commencedthe work of plunderanddevastition,
the destruction of property throughout the town
and its vicinity being most complete—the bun
galows in the cantonments, and all the British
residences being soon in a blaze—the now rail.'
way station with its buildings and machinery
and carriages—the extensive American mission
press premises and schools, all laid waste—the
public treasury, bank and storehouses pillaged;
in short, within a few days, the whole city of
Allahabad, containing one hundred and twenty
thousand inhabitants, was not only sacked and
ravaged, but literally reduced to one vast mass
of ruins and ashes.
More horrible even is the story of Jhansi.
The mutineers promised and swore by all their
sacred oaths to keep in safety such Europeans
as should surrender. Dr. Duff says:
Unfortunately for themselves, their wino and
little ones, they were induced to listen to these
promises, and coma out. No sooner had they
done so than they were tied in a long line be
tween some trees, and had their heads struck
off! Such ladies as had children were doomed
to see them cut in halves before their own turn
came! Then followed scenes of dishonor and
torture too hideous to be narrated!—these mur
derous savages, like the tigers which inhabit
their jungles, seemingly delighting to play with
their victims before dispatching them!
The missionaries were looking forward to the
month of August with terrible forebodings.—
Dr. Duff says:
Early next Month commences the grand an
nual Mohammedan festival of tke Mohurrim,
during which, even in ordinary times, the fol
lowers of the False Prophet often exhibit out
bursts of uncontrollable fanaticism. This year,
as you may suppose, the season of Musselmah
excitement is looked forward to with unwonted
anxiety all over India. Already at Patna, one
of the largest cities on the Ganges, where the
Mohammedans abound, discovery bas been made
of a plot to massacre all the 'Europeans in that
touter, on one of their great festival damin
August. Documents were seized which amply
proved tha,t money for this end had been plenti
fully supplied by one of the wealthiest Moham
medan bankers in India; and in these it. was
urged that the rising should be simultaneous on
the same day all over the land. This timely
discovery mil truly be regarded as pre-eminent
ly providential; since, by putting all our an
thorities doubly on the alert, the vigor of their
precautions may, under God, prove the means
of averting the - threatened catastrophe. Pray,
pray that, amid then outpoured judgments of a
righteous and offended God, the British people,
whether at home or iu India, may learn the les
sons which they are designed to inculcate.
