the fair was a "comparative failure" according
to the slew of, the writer. The true cause lies
in the apathy of manufacturers, farmers and

Sunday night, by an Irishinsil named Alexander
Haighey, and seriously Wined. Mr. Citable
deposed before Alderman Major that he heard
' arias of murder inning from llanghey's house,

tor was abusing his wife. He remonstrated with
him, and left. Soon after, Alexander and Jas.
'Haughey came to him while standing in his own
yard, and made an attack upon him, the former
stabbing him as before stated. When officer R.
- 'Jones went to arrest the parties, the whole faro

hi'Caffrey, attacked him and resisted the arrest,

whole, party was taken into custody and sent to

Timan was not near eunuch excitement about
the unparalleled state of affairs in money mat
ters in the city yesterday, as was feared might
ensue on Saturday. As may be observed all. the
banks of She city which have bills out, except
the Bank of Pittsburgh have decided to suspend
specie payments. There is apparently no opin
ion in the community about what is to come
next. Every body is waiting and hoping for
the best. All guessing and calculating are out
of joint.
Tna TIMMS, in spite of the commotion in
the financial world, itt well patronized. Flor
ence has so many labghable ways with him and
presents so great a variety of character in so
great a variety of circumstance and condition
as to attract a large crowd always. The play
of Robert Emmet passed off very well last even
ing, and a new and good bill is offered again for
to-night, as may be seen by the advertisement.
Yin Young idon's Christian Association held
their regular monthly meeting last evening.—
Mr. Bake..ell, the President of the Association,
read a eery interesting essay upon the reasons
why God withholds answers from prayers of
faith. Quite a gocidTy numiter of the young
men of the city were present, and the meeting
was one of great interest.

a sermon,
_reached on Sunday last by the elo
quent pastor of the Seventh Street Lroheran
Church, Rev. Mr. Krauth. It was a sermon
adapted to the times and made such an impres
sion upon his hearers that at the request of many
of them, Mr. K. has consented to have it pub
lished.

DIPLONIAAWARDED.—Whatever may be said of
the action of the Allegheny sod Western Penn
sylvania Agricultural Society in other respects,
they undoubtedly paid a just tribute to real
merit when they gave the Diploma to the Corn
Sheller, exhibiting at No. 65 Fifth street,•in this
city, over others on the ground; this should
stamp the character of letter A. No. I, on this
machine, but with practical men it did not need
this broad seal of approbation, but it may have
a tendency to remove any doubts that might be
[ in the minds of the most skeptical, with refer
' ewe to the utility of thin invention for shelling
corn. We think now that men of small or large
means may feel perfectly safe in making an in
vestment in State or County rights of this in
valuable machine.

Jura has arrived with London dates to Tuesday. the

cent., and it is anticipated that most of the Getman
hanks will be compelled to follow the example, and

Three regiMents of tho Bengal Satire Infantry
had revolted and fled to Boone river. They were
puraued by (ten. -Floyd and 800 of the mutinecra
killed. The mutineers were also rooted at Jinbal
pore and other places. Plots of the mutineers had
been discovered at Benares and other places.

Details aro given of farther atrocities by the

General Harelecke, while marching on Tnpore and
Cawnporo marched 1211 miler in four days and fought
fourdesperate bald. s against Nene Sahib. cumplete
ly routing him. Nina Sahibs atrocities et Cawnpore
beggar description; 400 persons, including 70
women and 120 children, were massacred in eeld
blood in the Court yard fronting Sahibs bead quar
ters, which was swimming in blood. Sahib escaped
but subsequently drowned himself, together with his
family.

Prox.enstrtrts, Sept. 28.—The Governor has is
sued a proclamation to the following effect
"Whereon, Serious financial revulsion has occur
red, resulting in the suspension of specie payments
by banks of thin and other States of the Union, and
the failure of many long-established commercial hot,
f+Cr leading to the destruction of confidence and gen
eral embarrassment anti depression of trade, and
threatening to affect disastrously the credit of the
Commonwealth and the great industrial interests of
the people; and whemas, an occasion so extraordina
ry requires prompt and efficient action to relieve au
alarmed and coffering community: Therefore, I here
by convene tho Gerund Assembly, to meet their
respective houses in the capitol at Harrisburg. on
Tuesday, the 6th of October, at noon, to take into
consideration and adopt such measures of relief in
the premises as the present exigency may seem to
them in their wisdom to demand."

PriItAItILPIIIA. Sept. 28.—The presidents of the
Banks have agreed to restore the Bank of Pennsyl
vania to its position at the Clearing House, to re
ceive its noire, and to discount liberally fur their
customers.
PHILADELPHIA. Sept. 25.—There is still no center
of action among the banks. They commenced pay
lug five dollar bills,but at 11 o'clock the North Amer
lean Bank. which previously redemisekall notes
suspended specie payment, and the samh:tourso wit
now become universal. The Philadelphia Bank h.
suspended specie payments 'and redeemed check
with notes, the other banks following this course.
Sow Vona, Sept 26.—Tho money market is eery
stringent. hut the banks remain firm in their posi
tion. Some heavy failures aro reported.
Adniono from Albany mention a run upon the
Savings departments by small depositors. Them is
no pressure elsewhere, and the bill holders and banks
there are quiet and confident.
Exchange on Philadelphia is ten per cent. Thi
rates for money on the street in some cases =min
to 6 per cent. per month.
The assignment of the Ohio Trust Co. was linos
peeted. President Stetson returns to Cincinnati to
morrow to procure a stay of proceedings.
The Metropolitan, Republic, Merchants', Bank of
New Toxic. Mechanics', American Exehtmge. Union
and Plocnix Banks, have issued acircular assuring
the public of their ability and determination to mall--
lain a specie basis for their circulation. and expressing
the opinion that the tendsmey of *peek, and preiliara Cn
this point will soon relieve the banks of the present
pressure.
