Every true-hearted opponent of Su- Chattanißll should battle with manly vigor for Miitafor,Vmmt4 Lewis and blumatin, and di rect kb exertions with an eye-single to rolling np a majority at least as large at that cast for John C. Fremont. It is Important that the Coun ty Ticket should be elected, and our organization thoroughly maintained ; but it is of the utmost Imporbuice that Allegheny county should con tribute her FULL QUOTA to the MMUSs of the State Ticket. Elegant Extreets—Democracy as tt is. • The Richmond Enquirer, a leading Buchanan paper in Virginia,.uers the following language "Until recently the defense of slavery has la bored under great difficulties because its apolo gists, (for they were mere apologists,) took half way grounds. They confined the defense of slavery to mere negro slavery, thereby giving up the admitting other forms of als very to be "Theline of defense, however, is now changed. The South now maintains that Slavery is right, natural and necessary, and does not depend upon the difference of complexion. The laws of the Slave States justify the holding of White men in bondage." Again, a leading South Carolina Buchanan paper says: "Slavery is the natural and normal condition of the laboring man, whether white or black. The great evil of Northern free society is that it is hurthened with a servile class of Mechanics and Laborers, unfit for self government, and yet clothed with the attributes and powers of citizens. Master and . Slave is a relation in so-, dee', u natural and necessary as that of parent and child; and the Northern States will yet have to introduce it." The Richmond Enquirer, on another occasion, used the following language: "Repeatedly have wo asked the North, glas • not the experiment of universal liberty failed? Are not the evils of free society insufferable? And do not most thinking men among you pro pose to subvert and reconstruct it?' Still no answer. This gloomy silence is another conclu sive proof, added to many other conclusive evi . denims we have furnished, that free society in the long run is an impracticable form of society; it is ever starving, demoralized and insurru . &lottery. "We repeat, then, that policy and humanity fai*o forbid the extension of the evils of free society to new people and coming generations. :.."Two opposite and conflicting forms of society cannot, among civilized men, co-exist and endure. The one must give way and cease to exist, the other become universal. If free society be un natural, immoral, unchristian, it must fall and give way to a slave society—a system old as the world, universal as man." The Muscogee (Ala.) Herald, another valiant Buchanan organ, says: "Free Society! we sicken at the name. What is it but a conglomeration of greasy mechanics, filthy operatives, small fisted farmers, andmoon struck theorists? All the Northern, and espe cially the New England States, are devoid of society fitted for well' bred gentlemen. The prevailing class one meets with is that of me chanic' struggling to . be genteel, and small far mere who do their own drudgery; and yet who are hardly fit for association with a Southern gentleman's body servants. This is your free society which the Northern hordes are endeav oring to extend into Kansas." - The South Side Democrat, another Buchanan . paper, uses-the following language: "We have gotio hating everything with the prefix Free, from free negroes down and op through the whole catalogue—free farms, tree labor, free society, free will, free thinking, free children and free schools—all belonging to the same brood of damn dole. isms. Ann the worst of ail abominations is the modern system of free schools. The New England system of free sehools.has been the cause and prolific source of the Infidelity and treasons that have turned her ' cities into Sodoms and Gomorrah," and her land Into the common nestling places of howling Bed abominate the system because the schhols are free." Again Mr. Downs, late Democratic Senator frinn Lotaisienl, in a speech published in the Washington Globe, says: "I call upon the opponents of slavery io prove that the white laborers orthe North arc as hap py, as contented, or as Comfortable ea the slaves.of the South. In the South, the slaves do not suffer one-tenth of the evils endured by the White laborers in the North. Poverty is un known to the Southern slave, for as soon as the master of slaves Names too poor to provide for• them, he Sells them to others who can take care of them. This, sir, is one of the excellencies of the system of Slavery, and this is the superior condition of the Southern slave over the North ern.•, We tryst that every Northern laborer, the ," greasy mechanics, the filthy operatives, and small fisted farmers," who are sneered at by the -Buchanan organs at the South, because they do "their own drudgery;" will read these extracts, and then decide whether they can vote the ticket of the Slave Democracy In this county. The avowal is openly made that Slavery is better ====t2l peed open difference of complexion"—they jus tify the holding of "white men in bondage.' , Voter, decide whether you will indorse these Senticienta by your votes. While disaster has fallen upon so many other places, Pineal:molt has not felt the least degree of pressure, nor has she, to any extent, been injuriously affected by the troubles elsewhere. Her merchants and manufacturers have been enabled to hold up their heads and go forward without embarrassment. Our banks, well known to be among the soundest in the Union, while pursuing a prudent and cautious course, have had the ability to meet the main demands upon them in the way of accommoda tiOnS and to keep our monetary condition sound and healthy. The western bills of our dealers, which have been and are now maturing, have been met more faithfully than was generally an. ticipated: and if nothing occurs to disturb the current of affairs, there will in a short time be an abundance of money in our midst. Pittsburgh has been reproached by many as a slow coach, old fogyish, and all that; but in such times as these Or commercial men find their safety in that very characteristic. Our freedom from speculative movements of all kinds is a great element of strength. It is our old fogyism that enables us to stand up safely against the storm, and we have consequently nu reason to be ashamed of it. Our bank, are all strong, with but a limited circulation out, and they possess, in an extraor dinary degree, and deservedly so, the confidence of the community. Whatever may be the result of affairs elsewhere, our financial condition is such that we may safely enjoy an immunity from fear. The country, it is true, is passing through a trying ordeal; but with the exercise of an or dinary degree of sagacity and prudence in this quarter, we may escape from any painful expe rience in it. One word with regard to the Banks of Penn sylvania generally. Those of them that are or ganised under the law of 1850 are so hedged about with restrictions and securities that note holders are safe in almost any contingency. Whatever temporary inconvenience may result from the suspension of any one or more of them, the interests of note-holders are so amply cared for that the ultimate loss cannot fall upon them. In the present feverish.condition of affairs, let us add, the purpose of every one should be to repress excitement and encourage that feeling of security for which there is so strong a basis. The misfortune which has overtaken Philadel phia need not be, and in all probability will not be, geaeraL It is local in its origin, and will likely be only local in its eirecte. - fox. JAYES Venom—This distinguished gen tleman was in the city during the week, and was introduced to many of our citizens. Tne bench of the Supreme Court will be honored by his elevation to it, and we trust we shall have the pleasure, after the election, of announcing his success. There is no candidate before the people ef the State who stands fairer on the record than Mr. Veech. Firm and conscientious in his convie_ dons of the truth of the principles of the party that has placed him in nomination, he cannot, by any means, be considered a politician in the modern sense of the term. It is true, in the good old days of Whiggery he made able speech es in behalf of the•great principles that party sustained; and subsequently, in 186(1, advo cated the election of the Union State and Union Electoral tickets, in opposition to Shamocrney; but with all this, he has not been at any time an office seeker. He has ever been too much de voted to his profession to thrust himself upon the people for office. He is a fine scholar and able lawyer. He not only stands at the head of the Bar in Fayette county, but is esteemed by the members of his profession as one of the ableit lawyers. in the State, and every inch a gentleman. ENCOURAGING 8101,11:1The elections in Ver mont and Maine, this year, show that Loeofoco ism is effectually crushed out in those States. They remain firm in the faith of true Repilhli canism, and again lead the hosts of freedom, 1111 in 1856, to the renewed struggle with their enemies. They send us the same encourage ment as then; and they give us conclusive evi deuce. of the fact that the party of Freedom is as strong to-day, as ever, in the affections of the people. Their example e ells aloud to us in Pennsylvania—••Go thou and do likewise, - and carry the State for WILMOT', l'illtwsett, Vence, and Lams in October. L1D113.1.
