Copies of the County :Address, wt. h the an swers of one candiditesie the questions sddres. sed to them, can be.had for gratniurcul circula tion at thiiOffteeor at the offices of the Journal and Dizi,ateh.,. Friends! take hold of the work and give them a wide circulation. They wi_t not Accept the Opportunity. We have waited several, days to see whether 'the RePudostion leaders would accept the oppor tunity we idled their attention to, of testing in the SuPreMeCourt, at once, the whole question involved la our railroad subscriptions. They will not accept it. Nothing is farther from their purpose than enelia course. They have no de sire to see the question settled. There are members of Congress, and a Sheriff, and a Settateriand a Prothonotary to elect next fall, and what hobby would be left for there fellows to ride into office upon if this were taken from them? No, no; they are too wide awake for that. They fancy they have deluded the peo ple into that credulous state which will enable them to keep the question:open another year and . serve to give them a ahanhtto elevate themselves to tub places they aspire to. The ringleader is understood to have fixed on a seat in Congress as hie:reward, and his right hand man has kind ly consented to take the Sheritirs• office. The othetit will be left for the small fry to scramble f0r.... This is undoubtedly the seoret of the refusal to take hidd of and settle the question at once. The . .opportunity Is not denied, but it will not do to accept it, because, If the question be set tled'new, the occupation of these fellows will be gone and, all their chances of promotion lost.— Can they be expected to throw down their hands when they think they bold such winning cards? The idea is a preposterous one—to them. We take it that the people of the county, In their aasiety on this railroad question, do not care to see it kept open for the mere benefit of politicians and adventurers, If a chance offers for its speedy settlement. That chance ck.us offer. An avplication to the Supreme Court for an injunction to restrain the Commissioners either from collecting a tai for riilroad purposes or franipaying the November interest on the railtoadlonds would bring up the whole goo fier' and lead to its speedy settlement. These men who are leading the anti-tax movement . will not apply for that injunction. Why? That is a question for the people to answer. To our mind the question admits of but one answer—to do so would spoil the calculations of the politi cians who have taken hold of this question as a rename of getting office. It. is not the interest of the people they. care for, they know when they have got a good hobby, and they are not going to give it up., But what will the people say ? Are they will lag to be Made sport of in this way—to be bar reseed with doubts and apprehensions and kept a continued fares, to subserve the aims of a few eold-hearted politicians, when the whole matter oan be definitely settled within the apace of a couple' of weeks? The answer is with themselves. Wital: do our Republi , in friends say Are they willing to be made the clasps's , to pull chestnuts out of- the fire for the interested loco pee ,patriets whip are at the head of this move seen: ' The time was, and not long since, when Selvitlipuhlicinita the county %scald liare scorn , e! . .1 so he inaddshe tool of such men. 1114 e they lost their - party-pride that they can be made such tools of nowt Let thentremeniber that there is an estaillen opportunity for settling this ques tion flits; which thou , men resolutely refuse to accept; and that the only inference that can fairly bo.drawe from this reftpal is that they wish to agitate the question yet another year to promote their own selfish purposes. If theto Is one tittle left of the spirit which animated our friends last year, they will spurn themedema ., gogues and trample them indignantly under feet." Wm. G. Hie name is signed to it as gar WIL LLUI G. HAWKINS, of Wilkens township." Those are the very Words of the signature, and he cannot creep out under shelter of Wm. D. Hawkins. We trxa told that the Address, as published in the Pool of 1848, his the name Wet. D. Haw kins; but thin is evidently a misprint, for there is no Wm. D. Ha ..kina in Wilkins township, and the words "of Wilkins township," as they stand appended to that address, show unmistak ably who was intended. It is pitiful in the extreme to see a man redu ced to such alternatives as this 'to get a paltry dice. First denying the signature altogether, and then striving to place it on the shoulders of a man with a somewhat similar name, against the damning evidence of the record 1 . ..5e1f, be betrays a consciousness of the wrongfulness of hie - position. But. he cannotthus wriggle out of IL Hats one of those who put his hands ear nestly to the work of plunging the county Into these railroad trembles I and if in his present at- titule of hostility to his own work he ispillorled by the evidence of his past *ours* and pelted by every passer by, be may thank his greed for otßoe for the misfortune. The utter lack cf prinelple he has manifested ought to prevent every right-minded man from trusting him with the place at which he alms.
