We havetaken down from his dictation the annexed full and interesting narrative•. we left. Havens on Ttiesday, Bth September, in ospipany with steamship Empire City. Made good'wenther.until 10th. On the evening of the 10th, there was every appearance rota gale or hurricane; ship still going on course and carry ing full head of steam, The storm. 'increased during the night and until Friday morning at 10 o'clock, the ship still making fine weather and keeping on her course. At o'clock on- Friday afterneon the engine stopped, and on enquiring ef.theemgineer, he said it was caused by the coal passers not passing the coal into the fire room . . with sufficient rapidity to keep the steam up . ' The waiters and stewards were then called upon and sent down to aaois6 in passing. coat When the engine stopped the ship tell off in the trough of the sea, and was at the mercy of the waves. c The pumps worked by the engine, and-which were the main dependance for keep ing the vessel free of water, were also rendered useless: t The engine aever made but ono or two revo lutions after this. 1 called the attention of the engtneer to the fact that the water was gaining, the rolling of the ship forcing it in through the lee'shaft hole and proposed and did orenize a gang for bailing. The deck pumps proving on trial to be out of order, bailing was the only re source. By this time the water had risen high enough to extinguish the lee fires, and the men employ ed in the coal bole and engine room were driven out by the steam and hot water. There was no longer any hope of again getting the machinery in operation. The principal leak was found to by around the lee shaft, and a the lower lee teed lights. The ship was still staunch and sound, and not leaking at the bottom at all, and would have been in no danger if her machinery and pumps had been kept going. .At 6 o'aloch. on Friday we rigged a drag, (a apan.with an ;anchor lashed to it,) and paid it out to windward; in the hipe of bringing her head bathe wind, but this had little or no effect. From 4 o'clock unlit 8 in the evening we kept the water &flay, every man working with spirit and vigor. From 12 to 4 o'clock on Saturday morning the water galbed fast on us, as the men were . fatigued and worn out by . incessant labor and exposure to the storm. At 4 o'clock the gale somewhat abated, but a hetivy'sca continued, the water thin being nearly up the second cabin floor. At daylight on Saturday morning, however, all hinds tookliold again with renewed rigor to free the 'ship. The vrater was thus again kept at bay for an hour or two more, during which signals of distreirs were set, and a vigilant look out kept for sails. The ladies were area anx ious to assist us in bailing, and cheered as up ik'eur labors by their calmness in these trying tithes. At .8 o'clock another atteiapt was made to raise steautin the donkey boiler so as to work the steam pumps, but the attempt again faSed, and all hope of relief from that—quarter was . . At 10 o'clock on Setunisr morning the men again yielded to the severity et their labor, and the water *gain commenced to gain on us, but the bailing was still continued. At half-past 1 o'clock avail hove insight, to the windward, which proved to be the Marine of Boston. At 3 o'clock she rounded to et leeward of ship, when boats were lowered, hailing still gains en. In loitering the boats two were stove by the heavy eta that still prevailed, which left only three, and one of them in a bad condition. By 5 o'clock we succeeded in putting on board the Marine all the women and children, twenty-six in number; during which the male passengers mostly continued at their work. The boats conld not carry more than fire or six owing_ to the high sea, and they made aeveral tripe to and from the Marine. When the boat that took the last two of the ladies came alongside the chief engineer jumped in the bust, and was I..Alowed by several other gentlemen. Two other boats came alongside afterwards when there was a rash to jump in them by the male passengers, .involving great danger. By this time the brig had drifted a tong way to leeward, which made the trips of the boats long, and by this time it, was dark,sm that the boars did not again return. About dark, nvessel believed t o be the schoon er Sovereign of New . Verb, ran down under oar lee. We hailed and told, him that we were is a sinking condition, asking him to lay by us all night, which he promised to do.. The bailing in the meantime continued to progress, but the water bid by. this time raised half way up the lower cabin, and waa rapidly gaining on na There was, however, an cessation of the bailing until one hour before the ship sank, when all hope of keeping her afloat until daylight was relinquished. This was about seven o'clock on 'Saturday evening. Inhould, however, Mention,. that two hours previous I had a conversation with Capt. Hern don, who lifter Consultation agreed with me that the ship must go down, but it was still advisable to'keep it up as long as possible, and we did not Make kuow.n the result of our conversation, but urged all hands to renewed effort. Capt. Hern don requested that the second officer. Mr. Fra sier, and myself should remain with him, and expressed his determination not to leave the ship while there was a soul on board, but would re main until she sank front under him. Ills only regret was his family--and he died like a brave At 7 o'clock on Saturday night the water was up to the floor of the dining saloon, and all then west to work calmly to devise means, each for their own safety. A halt hoor previous to the ship sinking there were two lights seen some distance to the leeward, supposed to be the brig Marine anti the schooner that spoke us an hour or two pmlous, but having a fresh breeze and high sea they were unable to work up io the windward. .A quarter of sn hour, before the steamer sank one of, our burls halted us, and a voice cried that his boat was stove, and he eenid not take any, ono on board. TMs heat was endeavoring to return from the Marine, but wee disabled. it WAS doubtless the impression on hoard both the brig anti the schooner that.the steamer would be able to keep up until morning, hence they pro bably - did not keep as near us , (haring the night se they might have done. Indeed it was the opinion of many on board that we would hold up all night, and I did net think that she wield go down before midnight. At 10 minutes of fi o'clock Captain Herndon took position on the wheel-houses with ltis sec ond-officer and fired rockets downward, the usual signal.todhe brig and schooner that we were Sinking rapidly. This 'was a fearful moment, and must have been also to the ladien on board the Marine, who understood the signal, ail of whom had husbands or friends an board. I now procured a board six feet long and six inches wide, leering it off the front of a berth, and mytiosition on the toffrail, and: held on the after awning itamieheon..
