Mews. Eilitnro:—Th e late democratic Conven
tion pursued the unusual ciinrse of nominating
two candidates for Assembly from one district,
and it may be Worth while to inquire how this
was brought abo"tit.
One of these gentlemenn, Mr. Salisbury, is
an old and, consistent democrat, who, although
not approving all the latter-day doctrines of the
party, has not seen fit to break up life-long po
litical associations by leaving it. lie is a man
of intelligence, and doe, not cover with abuser
every body who does not think as ho done, and
although always opposed to Know-Nothingistin
be has not denounced every ono connected with
it as cut.tliroats and villains. fie has never ex
pressed his approbation of the dogma of the
Immaculate Conception, nor does be on every
convenient occasion -d-s-n the preachers." It
may have been for this reason that it was'some
time ago resolved that he should be “laid out,"
although generally spoken of as a candidate;
and it is suspected that, a, a scheme for laying
bim out, a communication appeared in the Post,•
some three weeks before the Convention, recom
mending Mr. O. J. thvens, of the same place,
'for Assembly. Thst communication based his
claims plainly and only on the ground that be
was 3 member of the l'itholie. Church, it seem
ing to have been 'the intention tirdefeat 35.
Salisintry with Mr. Oseen3, it not then being
thought likely that the Convention would nomi
nate both. The remarkable character of the
qualificatton assigned in the communicalitAilo
the Pow attracted some attention at the time;
but those who knelt the individual best thought
it was impossible he could belnominnted, and up'
to the morning of the Convention it was not
known, to any but the initiated that his name
Would ersti Ire offered. Vet he was nominated
on the first ballot : The scheme, however, was
not perfectly successful, for by some mischance,
it was not Salisbury, but some else, tkat was
beaten by Mtn
Now, Mr. Editor, I am a Demand; but when
I see n stranger to political life—a stranger in
the democratic party—a personal stranger in
the Convention nominated over better demon -al+
and better sore,
,who Imre done the party service,
and that solely end openly on the ground of his
religious sympathies; and when I see, as I have
done, 'these religious sympathies appealed to
tfortupatrly in vain) to break down one of the
best men in the party, I begin to think it is time
for me to leave. I have not thus learned.
Plll.lll,`At. PROSPECTP.-A great concourse of
people from all parts of the county were in town
hit week. drown here by tho sitting of the
courts and the previous . announcement that our
candidate for Governor would be present. On
Tuesday mening, the campaign was opened in
gallant style by Judge Wilmot in n speech con

perfect furor of enthusiasm among a people that
for years past have regular ly instructed their
repreacntatives in rongreas to maintain without
flinching and at all haznrcht the principles of the
"Wilmot Proviso." During the week we saw

Junta: WILMOT'S SPERcal.—The speech of
Judge Wilmot, delivered In the Court House, at
Uniontown on last Saturday afternoon, was one
of groat force and power. It was at once clear,
argumentative and dispassionate, yet full of
earnestness. There rum no attempt at rhetori
cal flourishes, no vain, display of finely wrought
figures to tickle the ear, but a calm appeal to
the judgment of his auditory, in behalf of the
great principles of the party whose candidate
he is.
The Court House was full to overflowing.
The Judge commenced by stating that - he was an
entire stranger to hie audience, With the excep-.
tion of some few who were familiar to him in
politics. Ile come before them not for the pur
pose of persuading them to vote for him, but to
present to them hie views on the great leading
question before the American people.—Con
nellarille Enterprise.
A GOOD lions.—The New York Spirit of the
Tire giros the following characteristics of a
good horse: .
1. Ins oyes, even when seen in the stable, are
perfectly clear and transparent, and the pupils
or apples of the eyes are alike in color and
size. 2. On being nipped in the - gullet, he will
utter a sound like that from a bellows. If, on
the contrary, he should give vent to a dry,
husky, short cough, beware of him. His wind
is unsound. 8. His legs are smooth and"clean."
If you find bunches or puffs, or a difference in
size, though he may not be lame, disease lurks
there. 4. If broad and full between the eyes,
he is susceptible of being trained to aluttst any
thing. 5. If some white or peril-colored, he is
docile and gentle.
Tun resignation of Judge Curtis of his seat
upon the U. S. Supreme Court Bench will be
learned by the public with extreme regret and
surprise. His place can hardly be made good,
or will not be, we fear, by this administration.
The resignation is a.nuounced to us by way of
Bordered, but with melt particularity as, we ap
prehend, indicates that there is no doubt of the
fact.—Dolton Tray.

A Ctoro IN me FUTVIIE.—The English re
formers who strive to pat down mendicancy have
latdly found, to their horror and . amazement,
that for dreadful depravity the rapidly increas
ing Chinese population of london goes infinite
ly beyond the worst ever ascertained in the
woAt Continent al wretches. All the vices of all
antiquity; and or`alt the East, seem to have
been continued

others come forth and appeal to the population
of London not to give alms to such wretches—
of which sod . ° hundreds, the very refuse of
Shanghai, Canton and Hong Kong, are rapidly
introducing into the worst element of London
life a deeper depth of corruption.
This is not a particularly ugreeable subject to
touch on, bet it is one which is destined beyond
all doubt to prove fraught with very serious
trouble to the next generation; no power on
earth can prevent the Chinese from spreading, :
political trouble at home and slave-hunting
abroad are providing for this every day—they
are already going forth by thousands of their
own accord; and as no race in the world in so
utterly impassive to moral teaching, it will be
seen that they are destined to work mischief.

CLIINESE SVGAR CANE IN SotTll CAROLINA.—
A committee of the South Carolina'institute pub
lish in the Charleston Courier an account of a
visit of inspection paid by them, on the 12th
inst., to an experimental crop of the Chinese
cane on the farm of Thomas H. Dean, near
Charleston,'from which we learn that a pint of
seed planted on about half an acre of ground,
prepared in the usual manner for corn, a single
grain in each kill, has produced the enormous
yield of 36,300 stalks, about eight feet in height.
There were on the average at least five stalks to
eackseed, the number of hills being 7,360. AU 1
the beads of these_ canes werel well filled with
seed, a valuable crop in addition to the cane, as
it is usi3ful for feed to stock and poultry. Some
weeks since, Mr. Dean . cut down to the ground a
row of canes, and since then stalks have grown
up from the roots to a height of seven feet, and
are well headed a second time.

FIGUT WITH AND CAPTIJA6 OF INDIANS.—The
St. Paul Pioneer of Aug. 31:1,•reports a skirmish
' between the St. Paul Light Cavalry and some
Indians who had been committing depredations
near Cambridge, Minn.. One of. the Cavalry
company was killed and also one Indian, and
five Indians were captured. The skirmish has
caused great alarm among the settlers, and for
fear of the vengeance of the Indians yet remain
.ing, they are leaving their homes and coming to
the city. •

case of three men, residents of the county, who
were reported to be engaged in forging free

their escape. Of course, most indignant and
ferocious resolutions were adopted, but the par
ties.implicated wore missing, and the self-con
stituted court could only declare what it would
do with its culprits, if it should catch them. •

David Wilmot was the largest political meeting
we have ever seen in Ibis place, except county
mass meetings, or meetings called during Court

no effort m a de to rally the people; they came
of 'their own accord to hear the champion of
