PO, How 0 LI, 2iles. Losr.—The following is too
good to be lost. We clip it from an exchange
paper, and respectfully call the attention to it
of certain persons who feel disposed to spread in
the newspapei life.
....k young man who ardently desired 'wealth,
wns visited by his Satanic majesty, who 'tempt
ed him to promise his soul for eternity, it he
tsOttld,bo Supplied on. this earth . with. all .the
money he could use. The bargain was con:
eluded--the devil was to supply the money, and
was at last to have the soul, unless the young
man could spend more money then the devil
could furnish. Years passed away—the man
ii .
married, was e tr vagant in his living, built
palaces, specu widely—lost and gave away
fortunes, and ye' s coffers were always full.
lie turned politician, and bribed his way to pout
er and fame, without reducing his 'pile' of gold
Ile became a 'filibuster,' and fitted out ships anti
armies, hut his banker honored all his drafts.
Ile went to St. Paid to live, and paid the usual
rates of interest fur all the money he could bor
row, but-though the devil made wry faces when
he came to pay the bills, yet they were all paid.
One expedient after another failed—the devil
counted the time, only two years, that he must
wait for the soul, and mocked thy efforts of the
despairing man. One more trial was resolved
upon—the man started a newspaper ! The devil
growled at the bill at the end of the first quarter, 1
was savage in six months, melancholy in nine,
and broke, 'dead broke,' at the end of the year.
So the newspaper went down, but the soul was
saved."
A Seaarontm, Bum,.—The following'seulence
occurs in Judge Douglas' letter in the Chicago
Sunday Times:
"I had no knowledge, information, or intima
tion that the Fort Snelling Reseiration war tore
'Nil until after the sole teas made, and then only
leaned the fact by public rumor and newspaper
reports."
We doubt whether that can he excelled by the
latest arrival from the Emerald Isle.
:PATRIOTISM E . S. TIIF. PoCKET.—We perceive in
one of our Southern exchanges that a coulee
mner id' the city has generously o f f ered to set
apart one aunt for every glass of me cream or
sherbet he sells throughout the Week from the
18th instant, to holappropriated toward the fund
for the erection of the Washington Monument.
"The force of patriotism can no further go."
Tue cause of Governor Robinson's acquittal
is stated to be that the jury bad entirely used
up their stock of whisky„which could not be
replenished till sontedecision had been reached.
Tux tobacco crop in tbe Connecticul valley
looks uncommonly promising. The sur(ve set
this year is said to be larger than ever before.
