A' Circular was received from a conimitteeiconsist
ing of Reit. A. 11. Baseett nod J. AL Flood, appoint
ed at the Second. Annual Meeting of 'the Western
Literary and Publishing Society. held' n Juno last.
at Springfield. Ohio, touching gonerally upon the
injurious results to the M. P. Church IhY its union
with the pro-slavery wing.
We .give an abstract of the _contents of tho Cir
cular. - It alluded • to the action of I the General
Conforehie of 1854; authorizing the Meal:atilt - mem
of a Church Paper and Book Concern. for tho North
and West, and which resulted in the fotination of the
Literary Society from which the paper emanated,
growing out of the cirenmstanees of the connection
of the ebeirch With slaveholding.
"The official paper, of the Church; published at
Baltimore, which bad been established from our or
ganisation, could not he the organ of the nnti-slarery
portion of the connection, official proceedings of
Conferences being sometimes excluded from its col
amen from this cause. Hence the 'operation of our
literary interests, and the institution of a free press
no a necessary and judicious measure :I In the pro
motion of the interests of the M. P. Church, espe
cially that' portion-within the boundaries of the con
federation to sustain the same, could we do:less than
commit the revealed will of God, which requires that.
coo be redeemed from all iniquity, and; purified unto
himself It - peculiar people and could we do less than
pursue the injunction embraced ss one of the ele
mentary principles of our constitution, that it is the ;
duty of' all ministers , and Members of the Church to
mainjoin godliness and oppose nil moral evil. If
this be oac duty, is it not needful that our Press
should urge forward the :same moral enterprises ? ;
We find inexistence a mammoth iniquity, a system of I
untighteousnessr the concentration of all wrong.—
Yot, strange to say, this iniquity, participated in
more orloss by ministers and members of the Chureh,
uurebuked, is tolerated, countenaneedi justified, and
now, if WO may so /creak. tanctificti as of scriptural
authority, in a large portion of oar menection. Can
we,- Ought we, dare wo hold our peace in reference to
thin sin?". a u s
"We
. bavelhoen these many yeses hoping end ,
praying to ltrioome free from our connection wish
slave-holding, bylih removal from the Church:' but ,
is the 'hope deferred that maketh the heart siek?
"When, in 1828, the Conventional Articles of As- •
mciation were adopted, ono was embraced, at the
dictation of slave-holding representatives, preclud
ing any interference, in the right of property in
slaves. They were received. though ender protest,
with the understanding that the permanent Coned
tution would bo free from the objections Bet in the
Convention of 1830, met to form a Constitution, at
the bidding of members from the slavo-holding •
Status, not only was the word "white" introduced
into Art %IL, but the clause in Art. VII- under,
stood to pinteet the rights of slava-holders
"Our Southern brethren, chiefly by', anb-divisions,
multiply Conferences and Districts, so us even to
outnumber us; and it is futile to think of haring the
voice of two-thirds of the Annual Conferences' in
any , metentre desired byanti-slavery members, to
alter the Constitution?'
; The Report then gives a history of the various at
tempts made to remove the evil Iron the Church, in I
the General Conferences.
"In view of the differences of opinion, (which
have always existed,) the matter Was left with the I
Anthill Conferences, hod with the people in their
primary assemblies, which of course contemplated
action by a future General Conference."
The'titst General Conference of '113.35, held in-Bal
timore, the second, 1842, at Baltimore, the third,
1846. at Cincinnati, the fourth, 1850, , at Pittsburgh, i
end the fifth, 1854, at ,Steubenville, all failed to pro
cure a satisfactory adjustment of ttio question, the
majority considering-that they had no right to legis- I

"L3 it not most evident that tho slaveholding por
tionof the M. P. Church are not strictly benefited i
by nor connection wjth them? We are not useful to
them to promoting their salvation from iniquity.—
They become more and more eremite hear from ns
the least word of fraternal counsel or remonstranc e ,
touching the sinfulness of their pectiliar institution. 1

"No fact is more eashYdemonitrible than that the
M. P. Church In the Northern States hes elways_ l
been the loser by -the toleration of slaveholdiog in
our eeelesiaptical connection." ;
The report then speaks of the nenicrous and fre
quent withdrawals of leading and able.men from the
Church from this eause . f.steeing there ens no hope of
disconnectien with the evil. Bretlineb in the minis

"La such eases it has been. impossible for us to
spare a tear to their memory and to think 'chef nor
sinews mats eel - More than this, societies which we
have organized and others which ire have for years
been laboring. to build up, have been lost to us:—
Some have gone to other church connectieus, others
hove been scattered, and some we fear have made
shipwreck of faith and good coneMence—the whole

and swilling interest and enthusiasm felt in the cause
of freedom, the relation becomes more and more re

-The Convention held at Springfield in November
last recommended the holding of siconvention at
Cincinnati, in November, 1857, to which representa
tives should be sent, chosen at the respective Annual
Conferences, open the basis of rePresentistion to the
General Conference."
The report then recommends a onion of the anti

on an alniCa dO separation from the pro-slavery wing.

A stand hod been erected, becomingly decorated
