In looking over this list we note the absence
from the convention of the leaders and promi
nMit. Men of the party. They have given . the
convention up to those who usually stand in the
background, preferring not to take the respon
sibility of any silly action that may be re
solved on
The great difficulty of the convention will be
how to get over the Repudiation question.. The
members have got hold of an idea that,Roptidi
ation iepopular, and that their party May:ride`
into officoon it, but they fear to take ground
openly for it, lest it shoidd work injury else
where. They will probably adopt a sot of re
solutions worded so jesuitically as to seem to
mean what the party is afraid to say.

The party, in the State . and, in the nation, in

either rebellion , or • nullification. Now, the
Supreme Court 'of Pennsylvania, consisting
entirely of democrats, has decided that munici

that they are en-constitutional, the party will
set itself •in 'direct opposition to this decision,
and,sci . irsun_ple on the; platform by which it
seeks to -uphold the Dred Scott decision. Can

About three o'clock yesterday afternoon, pri
vate dispatches were received in this cite. an
nouncing the suspension of the Now York Branch
bf the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Company
Dank. Thia news took everybody by surprise.
It acted ass clap of thunder inn clearsky: The
Trust Company had been regarded as among
the safest and most substantial banking institu
tions in the country. Its business here had
been carefully managed, and yieldeil a fielr profit.
'What. then, could have caused an occurrence FO
disastrous in the operations of this institutioc•
Upon this point we aro utterly in the dirk.
Through public or private confined, tie have
no advices from New York except the hare
announcement of the suspension. The doors
were closed yesterday about :: o'clock. and
the fact was officially announced to the
Directors here, by dispatch from Mr. Stet
son, President of the Bank, who left this city
on Saturday morning, in obedience Lean urgent
dispatch from New York, and reached the la: ter
city on Sunday eyening.or. yesterday morning.
This is all that is positively known. But we
May, we think, safely venture the opinion that

operations growing wriree daily, instead of im
proving, 'finally yielded to the pressure. and
