Mears. Editorr—Desirous of escaping the din
of-business, and the heat and dust of the dog
days, I left the Quaker City so as to reach Cleve
land in time to connect with the steamer North
Star, of the Late Superior Line, for Superior
City, at the North Western satremety of the
chain of lakes.
This is one of the most interesting summer
trips which the tourist can make. The round
trip extends over about 2000 miles, and the
tourist has an opportunity of seeing Detroit,
Sault Bt. Marie, the canal, which opens to our
lake craft the vast expanse of Lake Superior,
built by Pzastus Corning
. and others under con
tract with the State of Michigan, and for which
they received the government grant of 750,000
acres of land; Mackinac, with Its fisheries;
Eagle Harbor, and the surrounding copper mines,
being the richest deposits of virgin copper ore
in the world; Marquette and its iron ore, so
pure that a blacksmith may forge a hone-shoe
from the native ore; the Appetite. and other
groups of isles; the Pictured Rooks, whose em
battled craigs rise abruptly to the height of
some three hundred feet, and extend a dietaries
of about ten miles. Longfellow has immortal
ized most of these far north-western scenes in
his beautiful Indian legend. One cannot won
der that such sights and seentuy should give
rise to such legends. Snperior is enveloped In
an atmosphere of poetry, which a person of an
imaginative temperament can 'earn breathe
without a manifestation.
It is to me a source of regret that this beautt
ill trip is not more popular. Unfortunately,
the Superior line of passenger steamers is •
monopoly, and like monopolies ererywhers, has
too little care for the comfort of its patrons.—
On our boat, the "North Star," there was about
160 passengers; the table seated about 75; those
of us who were compelled to wait for a second
or third ohanoe at the -not too well supplied
board, could not help wondering at the courtesy
(?) of our hosts of the North Star, whose prin
cipal and even petty officers had their chairs
turned down at the first table, while nearly one
hundred first classpassengers waited their turn
at the second or third. I felt this,. and other
strange customs a little odd. 1 did not see the
necessity for keeping back the dinner an hour
and o half on one occasion, for the speoial ea
commodation of some dome passengers who
were going off at a point we were approaehing;
perhaps they had requested, as • favor, that
they should bo landed in time to procure a good
dinner served up warm and nice.,
The trip as I esid, lea delightful one, the
scenery most interesting, Um air refreshing and
invigorating. Situate as your city is, I should
expect to meet numbeis of Pittsburghers on such
.a summer tour. Yet it is the few who make this
trip. It is too expensive by one half compared
with the fares on your floating river palaces, it
appears an extortion. And as regards the
mentors comforts of- bed and board, courteous
treatment" by officers, end all those eCcebtras,
there is no comparison.
Should some of your enterprising citizens es
tablish an independent lino of passenger baste
from Cleveland to the Lake Soperlor eountry,
officered by such men as one generally finds on
the La lie 1. Riviere palaces, and carry the
lourist, at reasonable rates of fare, I think this
would be on of-the most popular and invigora
ting summer trips inahei country.
Yours, B.

Tat Caar.s Luis NM war Acnoss.—By the
propellor Edinlany, Captain , Ctustunitsgs, which
reached this port yesterday morning, we have
the most interesting news of the progress of the
Atlentio Cable—some • days later than that
broug ht by the .dasibb-Ecoum, whose account of
the success of the expedition we also publish
this morning. The Edinburg left Glasgow on
the 9th Busts and on the 14th inst., about 7
o'clock A. M., the weather being rather
buy, two large ships were discovered about
900 miles from the Western coast of Ireland,
one of which was, as seen through the expellee
glass, distinctly paying out the cable. This
ship, as well as that in attendance upon her,
carried the British flag. Hence, as the vessels
were then mere than half way across, the por
tion! of cable assigned to the Niagara must
have been triumphantlylaid, and sitar it had
been successfully joined to the coil on board the
dgeunentnen, the letter must have started with
her share of tho World's great link under equal
ly favorable auspices.
On the night of the 16th, a brink gale sprung
up which oontinned duringithe 10th, and some
what delayed the voyage of the Edinburg. It is
probable that the Agarnemson felt the effects of
this gale, but as she was only advancing at the
rate of five knots an hour, whets seen by the
Edatburg, its vielence;:though it might slightly
delay her progress, was, according to Captain
Cummings' judgement, not likely to damage the
cable. It was the opinion of the Captain, first
mate and the old sea-hands on board, that
everything promised well for the success of the
great enterprise, and that the cable would reach
sale quarters in Newfoundland on Tuesday, or,
at latest, Wednesday of the present week..—N.

EMIGRATION TO I.lloARA.ollA.—Welker, it seems,
says the N. Y. Post, is seriously. contemplating
another expedition to Nicaragua, audyoung men
desirous of "emigrating" with luxe thither are
informed by notices published in the various
southern papers, where and when they can have
an opportunity of enrolling their names.
A "Central American League" is already said
to hare been established in Baltimore, the mem
bers of which, numbering three or four hun
dred, are only awaiting notice and the consum
mation of Walker's plans to take their departure.,
Ramifications of this organization extend
throughout the principal cities of the Union,
and men and money for the enterprise are said
to be abundant, although it is not precisely
stated bow the latter has been procured.
Instead of a puny band of fifty-six, the filli
buster chief returns to the scene of his exploits,
with an army of 'emigrants' numbering ten
thousand, who, in some mysterious manner, are
o be collected at the principal seaports;Whenee,
at about the same time, they are to sail for Niel
&ragas, so as to arrive there simultaneously.—
The accession of so large a body of colonists, it
is supposed, will establish fillibusterism in Nica
ragua on a firm and enduring baeis.—N. Y.

Tun contest between Henry A. Wise and R.
M. T. Hunter, for the seat held by the latter in
the United States Senate, is very: warm • and
even bitter, but well-Informed Virginia Demo_
crate are of opinion that Mr. Hunter will easily
carry his point of a re-election: In eloquence
and activity he hi no match for the Goternor ;
but the right implied in thepossessionof political
honors goes a great way in Virginia, as it ought
to do elsewhere. A very good judge of the rel
ative strength of the competitors, thinks Mr.
Wise will not receive more than twenty votes in
the Legislature. So far as concerns the general
interests of the country, it matters littleor noth
ing which of these two representative men

On no important question is It likely that one

Ileum AND Mawr Am.—This is the season
when we are emphatically- liable to farms,
cholera =orbits, other kindred diseases, and in
view of this fact a medical writer in the New
York Post says;—"l do not mean to allude now
to errors of diet and various other causes, but
to the air we breathe, which, in these hot and
seeking cities, is laden with an effluvia unfavor
able to health Especially it is at night freight
ed with unwholsome vapors, which care • should
be taken to avoid. These increase as the night
wears on, and it is unsafe to sleep with windOws
open. These noisome fumes do not rise to a
great height, perhaps not higher than a fourth
or fifth story, but belowthatthe windows should
be closed, and not opened until after sunrise,
when the character of the air became gradually
changed."

Coroner's Jury rendered a verdict to the effect
that Virtu died from injuries received at the

make the contract, but the members refused to

give ten dollars en acre for land in Illinois than
have the Virginia lands for nothing.
TWA POTATO ROT EXAOGIMATIV.—Tbe Lan

expected to be dusnally large and of a superior
