of Bishop Simpson is occupied almost. entirely
with details of the proceedings preliminary to
the meeting of the British Wesleyan Conference ,
the most of which Icon been anticipated by pre
vious arrivals. On one subject, hOwever, that
of the African Slave Trade, Le glues some state
ments which aro worthy of note:
"Dr. Boole, ono of the Secretaries, gore a very
interesting statement of a conversation held with Dr.
Bunting, who is too feeble to attend, el-e Wing his
deep anxiety to arrest the movement now looking
towards re-opening the African Sieve Trade. Dr.

which our own southern States will powerfully feel
—and finally will palm back into Africa civilized and
elevated laborers. But if the French Government
' should break its faith and establish elavery, then a
long, dark, dreadful night shall envelop us in its
gloom-

Europe seems to have been visited with one of
our old-fashioned tropical summers, with the
thermometer welt on to a hundred. The effect
here has been to hasten the harvest a couple of

vidence. The vintage, which promises to be
effected within a month front this time, will, it
is hoped, prove the finest and most abundant
since that of 'the comet,' (1811)."

abroad forbid the hopeof any material alteration

Such paragraphs as the above are of frequent
occurrence in the papers of the neighboring city.
They indicate unerringly that some great
change is coming over the commercial marine of
the country, for we find the memo complaints
prevalent in all the Atlantic ports. The only
plausible explanation of the phenomenon is, that
the business of sailing vessels is being gradually
but surely undermined by the feat accumulating
lines of steamships. The Black Ball packets
are not the first ships, idying to .tieir York,
which have felt the necessity of stoppage. We
recently announced that another line had broken

is an extract from a letter dated Calcutta, June
12, and published in the Pays, Patio paper:—
..Much has been said here, and no doubt much
has reached Europe, respecting Russian influ
ence. I will not repeat all the stories current.
I was paying a visit, some evenings ago,
at the house of a wealthy merchant, who feels
very uneasy at the present situation of affairs.
Among the persons assembled to take tea was a
Russian officer, with whom I had a conversation,
which left me under the impression that if
Russia was not precisely satiating in the move
ment, she at least sees it with pleasure, and is
preparing to lake advantage of it. No doubt
this is no new idea, but I believe the officer, to
whom I allude did not tell me all he knew. I
wished to sea him again yesterday, and I called
at his house. I was told that he hid quitted
Calcutta, and that he had taken - the road to

in the opinion I had formed . of Russia. Bissem
pore is on the direct. road 'to Delhi. Is it to

In further confirmation of the fact, a friend
of Mr. Curtis heard Washington, at the seig4of
Yorktown,. addressed as Monsieur k Merman!,
and an engraving from the Earl of Buchan is
superscribed to "Marshal General Washington."

STOPPAGE or THE READING COTTON MILL.— Re
have already noticed the stoppage of a number
of the lorgeet cotton mills in the New England
States, on account of the high price of the raw
material; and we now learn with regret that at
a meeting of the directors of the Reading cot
ton mill, held on Tuesday last, it was determin
ed to close it as soon as the yarn now on hand
is exhausted, which will be in the course of two
or three weeks. The great increase in the cost
of cotton makes it impossible to keep their mill
in operation except at a loss. This company
employs about three hundred operatives, a very
large proportion of them women and boys, who
will of course be thrown out of work by the
stoppage of tho (Po.) Gas.

tion of the Railroad Convention which is to meet

what has been so long sought--a coal burning

The Railway Times of Boston says there is no
mistake in the matter, and that the woods may
