make the streets passable in rainy weather for

In passing along one of the streets to-day that
was not planked, I noticed some men trying to
pry a team out of the mud. This planking the
streets they have found to be an expensive busi
ness, and they havo.now' commenced paving
them. Another thing they have-found out, that
in order to drain the city, they must raise it up
some four feet higher, which they are now do
ing. This is an expensive job, and raising the
streets so gives a bad appearance to many good
buildings; they look as if they had been com
menced down cellar. But the Chicagoans seem
to have a marvellous facility in adapting them
selves to circumstances. Some have already
commenced raising their buildings up to high
water mark: others are tearing down the old
ones and erecting new ones t . .

of coffee; he cannot do it with the case and grace
of a lady, It is an awkward and unatural po
sition fur a man to occupy, Any how. The
Briggs House cost $105,000, including the lot,
and is leased for five years nt $17,000 per an-
an the Richmond House and lot cost $170,000
and is leased for ten years at $17,500 per an
num; the Tremont House is leased for ten
years at $lO,OOO per annum. The proprietors
refused $lOO,OOO bons for their lease. They
cleared the first year 50,000 clear of all expen
ses. The bar and billiard room (with 10 tables)
alone, I sm told, clear enough to pay the rent.
The Massasoit House and lot cost $50,01.10 and
rents at . $.11,4100 per annum; the Revere House
and lot cost $40,000 and rents for $1 HIM per
annum; the Matteson rents for $B,OOO. Now
these are considered first class hotels, yet, after
all, give me our own Monongahela House and
John McDonald Crossett for a landlord against
the Universe.
It is said that the proprietor of the Tremont
House, after having leased it to the present
occupants, found that he had made such a fool
ish bargain, let it prey upon his mind so much, '
was the cause of his going to a premature grave,
whereupon, this text was brought to mind,
"But godliness with contentment is great gain.
For we brought nothing into this world, and it
is certain we cnn carry nothing out. And hav
ing food and raiment, let us be therewith
content. Rut they that will be rich fall into
temptation and a snare, and into many foolish
and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruc
tion and perdition. For the love of money is
the root of all evil ; which while some coveted
after, they have erred fvom the faith, and pierc

VOLCANIC Enornoss:—We learn from a gen
tleman who left the Sandwich Islands about fifty
days since. that just before he . took his depart
ure, nears wan received that the volcano of
Mauna Losat, the Island of Hawaii, had again
become fearfully act
e i r t; and as the lava dis
charged at the last ption approached within
about seven miles of t o village of Hilo, filling
up the unevennesses of the surface down to that
point, a distance of 60 or 70 miles from the cra
ter, there was great apprehension that the pre
sent eruption would either bury that village en
tirely, or undermine it and carry it into the sea.
This last apprehension resulted from the actions
of the lava at. the last eruption; it having in
several instances appeared to stagnate for a
while, but afterwards burst out lower down the
mountains and Carried all before it. Forests
were broken down and destroyed by it like bull
rushes.. The village of - Hilo contains a popula
tion of about 600 persons, including perhaps, a
dozen white families. It is situated on the
north-easterly side of the island, and such is
the surface of the ground, that if the lava ever
finds its way to the sea, it must bec - iiiparently,
over the ruins of this village. The present
eruption is from the same crater as the last. It
is not on the extreme apex of the mountain, but
from a position somewhat lower down. on the
easterly or north-easterly slope, looking towards

Shawneetown, on Friday night, resulting in a
verdict of not guilty. The investigation occupied

sanity, and is said, by the Southern Illinoisan, to
have been sustained by a Mountain of evidence.

Mercury hope that its "faith in the fighting
capacities of Southern men" will not be disap
pointed.
Meanwhile, the Union's artillery is spiked.—
It sits as quietly as a chastised spaniel under
the castigation of the Southern-press. Althongh
the recent apportionment and accompanying
disfranchisement entirely nullifies Walker's
pledge of a full and fair vote, it is as silent as
an oyster. So to the Argus—so are. all their
I echoes. They. are as dumb .as if their tongues
had been pulled out by the "Fire Eaters."
No marvel that the Mercury is jubilant. It
has a right to be. But let it wait. If what it
hopes for is attempted, it may learn something
of the "fighting capacities" of others besides

By late arrivals from California we learn that
"ia the District Court of Mariposa county, the
injunction sun of the Merced Mining Company
vs. Col. Fremont, was decided for the defendant
upon a general demurrer to the complaint. The
injunction had previously been dissolved by the
District Judge. The late decision of the Su
premo Court (affirming the order granting the
injunction) distinctly decides that the owner of
the soil has the right to enjoin miners' from
taking gold or silver from the land. An eject
tient by Biddle Beggs, leseee of Colonel Fre
mont, against the Merced Mining Company, for
the celebrated 'Mount of his Reduction-Works,
was also tried at the late term of the District
Court, and although the defendants interposed
an answer, in the nature of a bill in equity, in
sisting ujion all their preterisions, -and urging
every conceivable objection to the Fremont title,
after a protracted trial a decree was rendered in
rover of the plaintiff - for the possession of the
land, with all the works and improventente r and
damages for the detention."

ants and manufacturers for using their 'mark"
on the axes and other edged tools sold in Eng
land. The parties proceeded against do not
deny the existence ofthe practice for the last
fourteen years,:and plead its notoriety fur so
long a period as a justification. They complain,
moreover, that the American manufacturers
have, for a great number of years, been in the
habit of using the marks of English makers upon
.fiteir goods without • any proceedings being
taken against thew in the American courts.
Two wrongs do not make a right. If the Amer
ican manufacture of edged tools is now prefer
red in Birmingham, so that the American trade
mark has to be counterfeited, it will not be long

SPECIMATTOO4 IN SWlARS.—Letters from Bata
via as late as the 10th of June have just been
received in New York, and it is said they show
that the fever of speculation in sugar is raging
there. From the 10th May to the 10th June
175,000 fiscals had beensold at prices equiva
lent to 7ieB cents per pound free onboard, and
some important sales from the crop of 1858 and
of the crop of 1859, at very high prices, had
been made. In New York, says the Post, the
reaction in prices continues, and there seems no
disposition to speculate. A cargo of between
300 and 400 hhds. sold a day or two since at 81
cents, which bad been purchased on speculation
early in May at 10 cents. The news.from Eng
land by the Columbia offers less inducement for
the exporters to operate.
KANSAR AND HER CALMINIATORS.—In addition
to the letters published recently from General
Atchison, we beg leave to say to our readers,
that from other letters received from Kansas,
we are informed that the Pro-Slavery party in
Kansas is resolute in its determination of mak
ing Kansas a Slave State. On the ilst day of
last month they were confident of success, and
Would form a Constitution with Slavery ac
knowledg6l in it. If this Constitution is refer
red to the people for ratification, it is intended
to refer it only to the registered voters, who will
doubtless ratify it. We have more hope of Kan
sas than we have - ever had. We have great
faith in the fighting capacities of Southern men.

As extract from a private letter, dated July
7, from a person holding a high position in that
territory, says that Oregon will ask admission
into the Union next winter as a Free Slate; that
the people of Oregon are almost unanimous in
favor of a free constitution, and that the climate,
soil, and character of the inhabitants, - are such
as to preelude slavery. We hope this will prove
true; yet everything on the surface of Oregon
politics indicates a strong effort to incorporate
slavery into her State constitution, backed by
powerful politicar and social influences. •

HON. ELISE ALLEN, formerly Whig member
of Congress ;c from Maine, has been appointed
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Sand
i ich Islands, by the King, succeeding Mr. LTC,
lately deceased. Mr. Allen is a native of
Massachusetts, but has lived for some years in
the Sandwich Islands, and held-important posts
in its government, the last being Minister of
Finance.
Tut failure of .1). Frazer, a heavy produce
dealer and distiller, , of Chillicothe, is announced.
The failure is reported to be for the large sum of
$300,000. Mr. Frazer has been one of the
heaviest operators in the State, and hie fall, if
it be not over estimated, will involve a number
of parties in Chillicothe and through the Scioto
