tion held at Weashore on the 25th September,
1850. The Convention was for the nomination
of candidate to represent the 12th Congres
sional District of this Commonwealth, and the

Tits Union tries to felicitate it.elf over the
fact that the Cincinnati Gazette opposes the elec
tion of Jacob Blickensderfer, the Republican
nominee for the Board of Public Works in oaio.
As the Gazette opposes Mr. B. on the ground
that ho is supposed by some to be implicated
with the two democratic members of the Board
in swindling the State in 1845, we do not see
what the ro.ontan find so exhilerating in the
matter. If Mr. 11. is guilty, as the Gazette
alleges, it certainly does not help the reputation
of the Union', party in tho least.

a Surgeon who was attached to Gen. Taylor's
army in Mexico, and is descriptive of many
scenes and events connected with the Mexican
War. We know of no more readable book of the
kind.

been received, it preserves its very excepent

While Lord Napier, the English Minister, was
busy at Washington, his lady sojourned at the
Gilmore House, Baltimore. The fashionable
circles were agitated by the presence of the wife
of a live lord, and her Ladyship received neuter
sus calls and party invitations. The American
ladies of fashion, elaborately nod gaudily attired
in flounces and jewels, were surprised to find
the English lady in excessive plain dress, tn.- -

robbery, as it takes at least five minutes to ren
der the victim insensible. Dr. Kidd, of Eng

Chinese Sugar Cane has been thoroughly tested
in IlastTop county, Texas, and has withatotid the
drought astonishingly. While corn fiat; failed
to grow in the same field, the plant has grown
to the height of six and eight feet,
AT Mount Vernon, Alabama, Reuben Nash,
with a well4raitied dog, struck the trail of one
of his runaway slaves, and nearly overtook him,
when the negro shot him dead and effected his
escape. The whole neighborhood was at once
