N. Harris, hence from New London. The Harris sunk almost immediately, carrying down thirteen of, the passengers and crew. Twelve of the twenty-fire on hoard were all that were saved. , Among the saved were Capt. Smith, of the propeller Barris, the engi neer, and four of the crew. The Metropolis lay by until daylight, in hope of resetting others, out saw nothing. • The accident occurred in con sequence of the pilot of the Metropolis mistak ing the Harris for a schooner, from her having her sails set, and showing no head light. George Tappan, of New bedford, a passenger on board the Metropolis, died suddenly of ars pleas, soon after the accident. Among the passengers lost, are the wife and child of A. L. Smith, of Brooklyn ; the daughter of George Gordon, of New York; three children of the Captain of the propeller, and a gentle man, his wife and child, whose names are unknown. Of the crew lost are Stephen T. Pientice, of New London, mote; George Allen. deck band; Mary Withere, chambermaid, and Ann Willis, cook. The passengers saved, were John P. Dunn, W. H.
