"Tan Mtssocri:Etzertow.—A strange atmos
phere of doubt hie...been throvat around thare

of St. Louis; of soine.terrific fraud of the wire

Selves the "Democratic" party. As it was in
this abused State, which was given to the loco
feces last October, by hideous fmuds•since dis
covered by legal investigation, and at the time
yell-known so everybody; as it was in Illinois last
November, when the returns from Egypt were
made to tally with the necessities of tho case;
so it will be 'again in Missouri, unless the ballot
boa stuffers are in a position to be circumvented.
Here is the way the ease stood on Wednesday.
Ninety-two out of 108 cooties had been heard
from, giving Rollins, according to the Democrat,
a majority of rising 2800. At that time, if every
county yet remaining to be returned gave Stew
art Ore same relative vote that Buchanan receiv
ed in November, Mr. Rollins would be elected
by about 600 majority. On Thursday The Re
publican had tholollowing "leader":
"Not having anything more to do in the election,
and having 'corns down' as to the result, wo have
been quiet spectators of what has been going 013 in
the Opposition camp. Yesterday was a busy day with
the Black Republicans and the Know Nothings.
They suspended all 'operations as to the banners—
blink and white—tho torch-light procession, for
hick, two thousand torches had been aniseed—and
betook themselves to figuring oat n majority for Rol
lins, of which, until then, they hod been certain. A
committee of the two parties, composed of Messrs.
IVilliams and Donsheimer, on behalf mf the Know
Nothings and Blair, Brown and Stev'enson, on the
side of the Black Republieans, met at the cams table,
and after four hours of cyphering, and comparison of
all the tables published, they came to the conclusion
that if Stewart received a given number of votes, be
would be elected by sixty-five majority, and if he did
not get co many, and Rollins got more, then Ar would
be elected by live hundred votes, more or less. This.
we believe, was the result of their-consultations. de
liberations and figuring., and so the day closed."
In another place it odds this, in another tone:

"Our friends, the may go to work again.
At 9 o'clock list night we received the following dis
patch from Jefferson City :
'Reliable returns from ninety-nine counties giro
Rollins Bee hundred and fifty-two majority. Tho
counties of Butler. Dunklin, Oregon, Reynolds, Rip
ley. Shannon, Stoddard, Texas, and Wayne, to hear
from. Stewart it certainly elected;
'This is the dispatch. how many of the mond lea
enumerated in the ninety-nine are official, we cannot
say, and we leave it to others to form their own nein
io[l6. If they are not satisfied, they must, perforce,
wait for the official returns. We intend to do it."
The Democrat of Thursday says:
"We statal on yesterday that unless fraud were
perpetrated the election of Major Rollins we, fixed
fort. We reiterate the same to-day but we regret
to add that we are convinced that frauds are being
perpetrated.' Our advices from the City of Jefferson
MC to the effect that already the gent...] °wended
returns has been begun. Thee, the county of Polk
he. been certified to the Secretary of State as one
majority for Stewart, and no recorded; but now Col.
Acoek sends up an amended return giving Stewart
two hundred and thirty-one majority. We are fur
' thee advised that the nullifiers in their desperation
hare sent oat runners to meet the messengers bear
ing the returns of the remaining counties, with in
structions to alter the figures to suitihe necessities of
the ease'
—The St. Lo as papers of Friday, (2.4 hours
later than the above,) afford US the following
additional particulars :
!'The duly official returns that have come in, to
far as no are advised. are those learn the counties of
Adair, Manes, Audrain, Macon and Lewis, and they
confirm in each and every instance the accuracy of
the reports published in the 11 , ..orrat. By the /iv
pubfican's showing, the counties of Dent, Pulaski.

look for largo reduction. and gains in the,. counties.

The Repubikon makes the hallowing statement
"We have very little to say about Cho election.—
Everything was in abeyance yesterday. The 11°1-
llns men gave up figuring, and left the thing to Lai",
its course. Stewart's friends were not over sanguine,

ballots. In this mood they will bane to stag ,::,,r •
day or two, and perhaps longer.'.

rescue of Judge Thompson for his course on the
Fugitive Slave Bill when a member of Congress.

by the Judge when he prevented discussion on
that bill, since nano but . the opponents of the
democracy wanted to clicuss it, and it is always
right for democrats (alai; theta when they can.
Discussion is a thing which the democracy has
an especial aversion to, as we have lately seen
in die .I,t.rt.illg of iron the challenge Of•
his opponent. it loves gag Laws; and when they
are not arvillable, violence is easily resorted to.
But, says the Union, if Judge Thomysen dad
vote for the Fugitive Slave bill, Judge Wilmot
did not vote against it, and that amounts to the
same thing. Not quite. Judge Thompson had,
in 1845, professed strong anti-slavery views and
claimed that he, and not WILMOT, was entitled to
the honor of what is known as the Wilmot pro
viso: He was elected on the strength et these
1 1 professions: and yet, in 18ii11, when the Fugi
tive Slave bill came to the Hnitse from the Sen
ate, he availed himself of the opportunity offer
cti by a thin attendance of the opposition mem
bers, to call it up before it could be either re
ferred sir printed, moved the previous question,
Anil forged it through in a few minutes without
permitting a word of discussion, or allowing the
members an opportunity to read and examine it.
It is this piece of infamy we hold him responai
ide for: Judge Wilmot was a member of the
louse that year, but, like many other members,'
he was not present, on that day, not being
aware that the bill would he called up. No
previous notice bad been given, and the whole
thing was forced through so suddenly and so
quickly that the absentees were taken by sur
prise. Had Judge Wilmotbeen present we have
no doubt be would have voted against the bill.
Tat Fol2l' SNILUNIS SWINDLE.—We copied on
Saturday from the Detroit Adrertua.a statement
that: the Fort Shelling reservation had been :add
for an unknown sum to political favorites of the
present administration, inolading sundry mem
bers of Congress, but presumed to ho vastly
.below its value. We learn from the New York
Tribune that the sum obtained for it is but
$90,000 !
. This in a most iniquitous swindle. The re
servation consists of 28,104 acres, including the
public buildings thereon, which did not cost less
than $50,000, and is the finest spot of land in
Minnesota.. Its real value, at the present rates
of land in that territory, is at least $2,800,000.
This immense and valuable property, which is
rapidly augmenting in value, has been privately
sold under a clause smuggled by a locofoco
member of the last Congress into the appropria
tion bill, for the beggarly sum of $ OO ,OOO, the
administration thus deliberately
. witiallng the
national treasnri out of more than $2,000,000,
for the purpose of enriching political favorites.
It la too much, we suppose, to hope that the
next Congress; will investigate this piece of
robbery, seeing that none but , locofocos are en
gaged in it. No Congress has ever yet thought
it a crimp for members of that party to filch dol
lars from the treasury.

their campaign papers, is a cheering indication
that the "sentinels on the watch towers" are

in Northern Illinois harvested forty acres of
barley this season, which yielded 62 bushels to
the acre. He employed reaping and threshing
machines enough to cut and threat it in two
days, put the crop on the evening train of the
second day, - run it to Chicago, where'll had been
marketed at $1,60 per bushel, and took back
with • him $4,968, the cash for the produce of
forty acres in one season.
