Gas. Russ— The Nam ,- inches Chronicle con
firms the report•of the' suicide of General grim.
It says:
. "Oen. Rusk has, ever since the death of his lady,
suffered under a mental deptessionf; which at times
bore him down" beneath its weight. Ile bas, to a
„greet eitent, secluded himself from society, and lato
, ly that, despondency has. been mere marked and rip
parent to those familiar with him. A severe
from which he was just recovering, has prostrated
him for weeks, and he was suffering greatly from a
rimog upon the back df his neck.
"On yesterday evening, about 2 o'clock, his family,
hearing the report of a gun and the fall of a body,
ran to the spot, and found him lying dead upon the
ground, behind the gallery at the back of the house,
with a rifle under him. A coroner's jury was sum
moned, from whose verdict we extract the following:
"Ile cause of bin death was a gun-shot (rifle)
wound on the fore part of the bead, inflicted from et
rifle gen' hold in his own hands, and discharged by
himself:
"No further clue can be given to this mystery. No
payees or writings of the some day hose been found,
except a letter addrev-rd to age:ellen= in New Or
leant, ordering a tombstone for his wife, with this
inscription: 'Blessed are the pure in heart, for they
'ball see God.' "
AIIEIIICAN l'reas, of Philadel
phia, criticises an nrticle in Harper's Magazine
upon American politeness and says:
has told us what terrible violations of Falito
lICRS Americana are guilty of. We can tell him what
they do not commit. Travel where you may, all
over the Union, in no place will you see an Ameri
can woman laboring in the fields, (as in France and
Germany,) like a beast of burden ;in place will
,you find the habit of ,beating wives within no inch
of their lives so notorious that (se in England) Mat
utes for the express purpose of punishing brutal hus
bands have to be enacted. and rigidltonforeed ; in
no plate will you find (an in Ireland) women, with
whole, families of young children, begging their
tread on the highway and in the street, thiserable
and starving."

0111.114i1ZAZION KAIGeAL—The
free state -men of Kansas, under the lead of
Gen: . Linn; are organizing in regular mil taiy
style; the object. to be •ittained being to make
their power felt as protective of their rights at
the ballot-ber., and eventually to make Kansas
a free State. There ere already the names of
five thousand men on the muster-rolls, all good
and trne, and in an emergency it is calculated
that these can be increased to :in army of ten
thousand strong. The free state men have alsO
made an imposing dientay of power in the recent
election, which they had all to themselves. It is
credibly stated that the Topeka Constitution re
ceived six times as many votes as were cast by
Itio Nationals for their candidates (without op-
Iposition) for framers of a Constitutional Con
vention.

Their candidate, Major Bullies, committed himself
