OUR BOOK TABLE
From time to time there have come to us from
across the ocean intimation» that the celebrated
MERLE D'AunicxE, of SWitzerland, a name —fa
wner to our ears as household words, was
preparing a new edition of time great standard
work that every body, we bad almost said. has
read. TOE. HISTORY or Tile REFORSISTIon. At
length the promise as inferred from the said
intimations is fulfilled, and the fruit of the
great Professor's labor is before am It were
as uncalled for to write complimentary no
tices of Shakspeare's hamlet, as of this great
work. All 'that the newspaper reviewer - 6 or
writer is called upon to •lm• m mlirect the atten
tion of the public to the edition of such a hook.
We could not guess what number of editions this
work has been through. We have seen some
dozen or more in different stylem since the boy
hood day in which see thumbed dog-eared, vol
umes of it, and learned from its greasy
pages to love LErnER and hate TerzeL : but of
all, the one a part of which now lies before us
is the most beautiful—in fact as nearly perfect
as it is possible to conceive of. It is, moreover,
a Pennsylvania edition, issuing from the press
of Messrs. W. S.; W. 11. Freeman, of Lancaster,
who have established an agency for the sale of
the work at No. 113; Third at., corner opposite
the St. Charles Hotel.
The work is to be issued in monthly numbers,
four of which are already published. They are
sold at 25 cents per copy. In addition to the
splendid volumes which subscribers will here
when the series shall have been completed, the
publishers will present to then. a tine large steel
engraving of the first reformers presenting their
famous protest et the Diet of Spires in time year
1529, which act won for them and those who
might follow them in belief, the imperishable
name of 'Protestants." This engraving, worth
Si,, contains it very large number of portraits,
including those of Luther Melanethon the elec.
hors of Saxony, etc., taken from the pictures of
Albrecht Lurer, Titian, liolbein and other mas
ters, whose names in Art hold a similar position
to that which the Reformers held in their Ova
spheres.
The History itself, is also illustrated by
choice steel engravings, and ie, whether consid
ered intrinsically or artistically, Arthy the pat
ronage of that class of people who love to see a
good thing well done. The agent, at the place
above mentioned, will be always ready to see
those who may desire to okamine or subscribe
for this great work.
