s•everal trains departed for the States, on.l near
ly four Inn mired started for t /regon. It was with
difficulty that they escaped, and ninny threats
were made that violence would be committed
npon them if they attempted to leave the coun
try. The large number of those who left is 1,,,
hered to have been their protection.
"The emigrants are heartily sic!: of the Mor
mon religion and all the attendant institutinus.
They state that the member. of the church (em
bracing almost the entire adult population of the
Territory) have, on an average, about three
wives apiece. A poor man, they think, has no
possible chance to succeed in Utah. With de
cidedly strong prospects of having a large fam
ily to support, he is compelled to devote the en
tire labor of every tenth day to the church, and
t... pay henry tales beside. Some of then: state
tha , sine were called upon to pay tirhekbefore
they had been in Salt Lake City a w‘ek. There
are many who would gladly renottrie the Brig
ham Young tyranny and flee from tile Territory;
hilt after the 'endowment la eerie n step in the
d:rallies been taken, the subject of it cannot
hive unless he has the permission f the spirit
ual authorities, -Without placing hi life in the
moot imminent peril. Large numbers of unfor
tunate women, who wore lured into Utah by ap
pealing to their religious enthusiasm, and gross
ly misrepresenting the actual state of affairs.
are thoroughly disgusted with the practical
workings of what was so beautiful in theory,
but have no means of escaping from their hard
lot.
••The disaffected, however, (according to my
informants, who come by this train,) by no
means comprise the whole, or even a majority of
the people of Utah. Thousands of icon . have
PllOl deep-seated faith in Brigham Young that
ihey would cheerfully fight for him to the last
drop of blood. Many women, too, with a firm
persuaaiondhat his mission is from Heaven, are.
attached to him with a fanatical devotion, and
would not hesitate to lay down their lives for
him. In Great 'Salt Lake City the people are
well armed, and have thirty pieces of artillery.
In many of their localities, the male Saints are
armed and disciplined. These emigrants con
firm the" various reports that the population of
Utah has been greatly exaggerated. They think
forty thousand a liberal estimate, and state that
:quit Lake„ city has not more than seven thousand
fiOTTIT:It EXIIIRITION OP CIIIVALRY.—At the
phrata Mountain Springs, Penn., a difficulty
occurred on Saturday, between a Baltimore
man named White, and one of the colored serv
ants. White accused (wrongfully) the servant
of carrying off Ids plate. The servant gave him
the lie, and then Mr. White retorted by picking
op a tumbler and hurling at the . negroe's head.
The latter evaded the. flying mimic by dodging,
and directly mails towards Mr. while in a men
acing manner, and struck him in the' face,
urged on, it Is said, by the Mimi servants in the
room. The noise of the disturbance immediate
ly filled the room with the guests of the house,
rincipally Southerners, who caught the servant
and forced him out of the room. They thou
held a meeting, at which they not only denounc
ed the servants, but "free niggcra" generally,
and one of them proceeded to distribute his
abuse upon Pennsylvanians generally. A Phil
adelphian, also a guest, replied, with anima
tion. :He was banked up by others from the .
North, and then followed a scene of the greatest
confusion, which threatened for a little while to
lead to very serious consequences. But, fortu
nately( oil was poured on the troubled waters,
and order was somewhat restored.
The servant has left the house, and at the last
accounts all was quiet.
Coors ix Moils.—A gentleman who has trav
eled extensively through this State, the pant few

the hay crop has been considerably injured by
the wet weather, still the farmer will secure a
very large crop, and if ho has met with aloes by
some of his bay getting wet, he will receive
more than a full renumeration from the fact that
the wet weather has . resuscitated his pastures,
and will consequently add richness to his dairy,

Trip to New York
ROW, -PhilacieW,a—CarnficnandAinhoy
—New York, her 1m0.,...; men, large operation,
in trade—Suaar s:peculation—Quarantine laws—
Itc.su 6.szsirrn: The route of travel which
the great Pennsylvania Central Railroad Ira
verses ha,, been so often discribed that we shall
not attempt any description more than to say,
that for personal comfort in the ears, and beau
liful and picturesque scenery, this route cannot
he surpassed.
After remaining nearly two days in Philadel
phia, we left. for New York by the Camden and
Amboy route.
_ .
Nee - York presents .0 many attractive fea
tures, that it would be a difficult matter to par
ticularize, so we will merely mime some things
not usually noticed by correspondents. One of
the first things that will strike the mind forcibly
of 11 stranger engaged in any of the departments
of 11.1t4it1e,, , life, is the extensive scale on which
all kinds of merchandising is transacted. We
had occasion to mingle somewhat among business
men, anthill several occasions learned some inter
esting 11101,.. NO mercantile community in the
Union, if indeed in the world, employs the same
taeilities for conveying information to merchant
strangers, as the NOW Yorkers. Advertising is
carried on extensively, and at high prices, too:
then in addition to an expensive eard„Circular
and fancy placard, often a large amount of val
uable and interesting information to a stranger
is interwoven and distributed gratuitous ly. In
every other large city—east and west, too much
economy is practised in such matters. It is said,
that goods can be obtained much more easily on
credit in New York, than in any other eastern
city. They evidently assume greater risks. con
sequently their business operations are more
hazardous. Reverses, pecuniarily, are more prev
alent here than elsewhere because of this mode
or venture in trade. Whilebooo are unsuccess
ful. and found wanting to a large amount, on
the other hand, a large number make princely
fortunes—soinetinies in a very abort time. The
interests of this great emporium areso identified
with the whole commercial world, t h at any war
like movement, will suddenly create a demand
for some particular articles enriching the hold
ers—as fur instance the effect on tea, arising
from the difficulties between the British and the
Chinese: while on the other hand many have
been made bankrupt by unexpected changes in
foreign parts.
We made the acquaintance of a large commis
sion house on South street, fronting the East
River, and on enquiring we learned that in one
article of trade alone last year, their sales
amounted to over too natitions of dollars, and yet
there are other firms whose sales exceed this
sum. Then we ascertained, through a reliable
source, that one large wholesale grocer, who had
over one hundred thousand dollars worth - of Tea
on hand, when the large advance took place on
that article, had cleared on their sale- of Teas
and other vods, during the past six months
ending .1015 Ist, over seventy-five thousand doll
ars profit. This is' not surprising when it is
boastingly =aid of a merchandise broker, that
Ilk business is worth over fifty thousand dollars
per year, as we heard of one firm whose name
we can give. These instances we have given
only "fee to one department of trade.
It is said, and we hare no cause to doubt the
statement, that at one time during this summer,
one hundred and thirty thousand hogsheads of
sugar were held in store—principally in "bond,"
he commission houses. This number of hogs
heads is greater than the, whole of last year's
Lousiana Sugar Crop. We never knew of over
fifteen thousand hogsheads of Sugar—perhaps
twenty—being held in Pittsburgh at one time,
and then that smoother only when the Spring
stock had been received. 'Tic true the demand
is quite different, but ill . ustrates the character of
the trade of the two cities. Strange as it may
appear to many iwhile on the Sugar question)
that notwithstanding the coming Sugar crop of
honsintat promises to be four times larger than
season---easy four hundred thousand hogs
heads—and the pros.pect of an abundant yield
.4 Island sugar too with nearly ninety thousand
hogsheads stored in -ew Yet k. July list. as
well a. large stock's in other eastern cities, still
holders anticipate an advance in the article and
hone--'/.Arne hops -t fiat the stuck will lie sold

march to their immovetnetmt..
The goarattline laws are very annoying to the
commercial interests of N. 1., not only in the
serious detention, hut in pecuniary losses. The
laws are good, when in operation to prevent
but there should be exceptions.
nide rpm., of sonar, liquor, fruits. &c., arrive,
soil by virtnedif this lan. they are detained, and
what ie oftear the result The vessel during
•lier detention is visited by river thieves in small
boats. and the work of depletion is carried on
in the night. so that by the time the vessel ar
rives at port and discharges her cargo it is as
tertained that a large amount of. goods have
berm stolen —tea late to rotnedt• the evil. One
merchant remarked in our hearing, that during
the. last year be had been robbed of twenty
lb...ands dollars worth of goods, while his ves
sels were ling F., .I.e uttarn . itine grounds.
It is no wonder that so many are willing to
serve in the capacity of Collector of
the port of New York, when one beholds so many
large bonded warehouses belonging to the U.
S. for storing goods which pass through the
Custom House. There is not only a large num
ber of the warehouses four or five stories high
in the lower part of the city, but the row of
buildings which line the Brooklyn side of the
East River are used for the some purpose. This
arrangement enables the importers to hold large
stocks of goods until sales are made. This can
lie to done; when theloods arrive to let
them be stored in the Government warehouses,
and sell by sample When the sale is made the
duty and storage is paid, article weighed by
public weigher, nod then delivered to the pur
chaser. In thin way large transactions take
place with only one change, from the importer
to the purelm,er. The duty on Foreign Sugar
previous to the Ist of July wits HD per cent., but
since then 24 per cent:, or about sixteen dollars
on each hoggshead. In this article alone the
Custom House receipts are enormous. More

Tau News TIIO3I INDIA wan Cutict.. , —The mail
which left Bombay ou the first of dila mouth,
sixteen days after the previous departure, may
be considered to report affairs unchanged as they
could tio in that interval. The mutiny had con
tinued to spread in the &age] army, which was
to be foreseen; but it had evidently not 'exceed
ed its original bounds. Delfri had not been cap
tured, but the insurgents had betrayed the weak
ness of their position by some considerable sor
ties, and their own want of courage, discipline
or generalship by being beaten with great
slaughter.
So fur as regards the besiegers and besieged,
time would be in favor of the former, injurious
as the example would be in other parte of India.
The peaceful and industrious population of Ben
gal proper watch the struggle as much as we do,
only having much more to lose and much less to
do,' • However, as a measure of precaution, the
native regiments at. Calcutta and Barrackpore
had been quietly disarmed. At Madras there
was an uneasy feeling, but neither there nor at
Bombay was there the slightest sign of disaffec
tion. Nothing is reported of the Punjab: Here,
then, it is evident that the mutiny is confined to
the north-west Provinces, far in the interior,
and surrounded by a circle of order and loyalty.
011 every side our basis of operations is tan
disturKti, and, at the very worst, it is now little
more than one of those local wars with a State
or confederacy, such as we have had a dozen
•-• • •
times over since the beginning of the century.
Wc have no wish whatever to make the best of
the news, but itcertainly would cost a little vio-
knee to torture more out of it. The worst is
told when it is stated that Delhi was still in the
hands of the insurgents; but when we know
that Genera Barnard had only three or four
thousand European*, while the insurgents were
much more numerous,.and, in addition ton fa
natical population, better provided with artillery
and ammunition, we can make allowance for the
policy of not bringing the struggle to an imme
diate issue within tue ramparts and streets of
the city.— Lon& new, 99th.
