Not only is it to be lamented on account of the welfare of the young men themseltes, but also in reference to the prosperity of the coun try, for it is a truth that cannot be contradicted, that the best intrests of the inhabitants of any country, are intimately connected with the pros perous condition of its agriculture. It is the cardinal pursuit of Jrian, and' all others must prosper or decline with it. It is that pursuit that, of all others, will be most likely to help us comfortably through the world, and is most prolific in substantial enjoyments, and real independence. We would not wish to be under stood as speaking disparagingly of others call ings, or to make invidious comparisons between the various occupations, in which the people of civilised countries are engaged. All are useful and honorable when fairly conducted. But we would check the inordinate taste of our young men for commercial and professional life, which now wars with a giant hand against the wealth and morals of the natio?. • And this state of things bears - with great tomb on tips laboring poor. For although they can procure, nominally, good wages for work, yet so extravagantly high are all the articles of food, induced by the limited number of the cultivators of the soil, that it requires their utmost exertions to obtain a com fortable livelihood. It is not often that the poor see harder times than they have for some time past; and even men of moderate property, who n ordinary times are easy gith the world, have o ••seratch' to get along, is the saying is. An undue proportion of our people are engag id in other pursuits besides agricultnre, and it. is high time that means be applied to remedy tho great evil. But aslong as fashion is on the side of professions and mercantile life, lit will require a Hercules to conquer our enemy ; but it must be conquered, though we have to enlist Hercules and Briareus, also to fight for us. And why should our young men be so eager to leave the farm and plunge into other avoca tions ? Is there one Chace in a hundred, that their fond anticipations of obtainifig wealth and fame will be realized How many professional men obtain wealth and distinction! The chance is against them, and experience has proved it so. Theirs is a life of anxiety and: turmoil, though it may be a useful and honorable one. Therefore we would say to young men, who have been educated in husbandry, stidk to your form, and if your hands are not as white as the minister's and your bow not as graceful as the lawyer's, you have substantial prerogatives that they know not of. Yes cultivate some acres, get some books and read them, keep!, clear of dept if possible, and if gou aro not happy in this selection, you never will be in any.—Pror. Tran. NEW ORLEANS papers contain adiices from Vera Cruz to the 21st of July, and Ifrom the City of Mexloo.to the 17th July. As far as heard from the elections were all favorable to Comonfort. It was believed that Benito Juarez, progressieto, was elected President of the Su preme Court. In the election for Deputies for the City of Mexico on the 12th, the Liberals were triumphant. Serious alarm was felt re garding the state of affairs with Spain. The Secretary of the Interior had addressed circu lars to the Governors of(the States on the sub ject, stating that a rupture was inevitable, and calling upon the - Governors to hold the National Guards ready for orders, and to transmit reports bf their numbers and efficienoy to headquarters. The Eco National says that in case of war, Com onfort will lead the array, and Juatti act as President in his stead. The tiews o! the war with the Pinto Indians was conflicting. Gener al Alvarez had not succeeded in subduing them, and it was reported that his health was giving way. Gen. Lopez Grata, who was formally ex iled, has offered his services to Comonfort in case of a war with Spain. The Vera Cruz pa pers were silent on the subject of the vomito.— The revolutionary moverement at Jalapa, in favor of Santa Aana, had caused the govern ment considerable uneasiness. It was generally believed at Vera Cruz that Santa Anna was somewhere in Cuba. It is at page 934 that the follow ing passage occurs: "In some of his (Drat's) rhapsodies be crosses the narrow line which 'separates the sablime from the ridiculous. In others he passes the broad one which separates sense from nonsense. What ie the meaning of "the lino of confusion, and the atones of dmpti- Ansa?" or of "the bow' quite naked, according to the oaths of the tribes?" Readers of the Bible know that the- first expression, so confi dently pronounced nonsense, is found inloalah, ch. xxxiv. v. II—"But the cormorant and the bittern' shall possess it, the owl also and the raven shall dwell In it; aid he shall stretch out upon lithe line of confusion and the stones of emptiness. Able, a partner of Stringfellow, at Platte Pity, .11iseaurr, July 211. [Cerrerpendence of the Dlimottri Democrat.] 1 Ile had frequently heard it charged that the pro-slavery men in Kansas had sold out to the free state men. This was false, and he wished to state the position of the pro-slavery men of Kansas, so that their friends in Missouri might see into their plans arid policy. They had not abandoned the idea of making Kansas a slave state by a jug full; on the contrary, they were greatly encouraged, and he took this occasion to say to pro-slavery men that the prospects of the party in Kansas were brighter and more hopeful than they had ever been. It seemed that there was a great deal of misunderstanding in Missouri in regard to the party in Kansas, and he worthd give a history of the party and its policy, for he knew all about it. In the first place, he said, the, - organized the party under the Lame of the Oro -slavery party, and it worked well be cause it brought all men who were in favor of the south into one solid, compact body. As time passed on, a great many persons came into the territory from the northern statesto were not pro-slavery men in their feelings, be who were against the free state men in their r instance to the laws of the K 1112904 legislature/They found out that this, class of northern men would not net with the free state men in resistance to the laws, nor would they act with the pre-slavery men because they were not in favor of slavery. In order to get this class of northern men to act-with them, the pro-slavery party agreed, af ter consultation, to change the name of the party from pro-slavery to the law-and-order party. This change of names had a happy ef fect, because it brought a good many men into the party that they. could not have gotten' into their ranks any other way. After a while a still larger number of people from the Northern. States came in, and policy dictated another move. Ile had written a call for delegates from all the counties in the territory to assemble in Lecocap ton last winter, and they did meet and deliber ate upon the future action of the party. A great many men had moved into the territory from the Northern States who had voted. for Mr. Buchan an, and who were opposed both to the black Re publicans and pro-slavery parties, and it was the policy of tho pro-slavery men to`propitiate this class of men. It was admitted in. their de liberations that the name of law-and-order party. did not nave a national rentatation, and that the name of the party must be changed. It was ad mitted that the Whie party was dead, and its name would not answer the purpose they bad in view. It was deemed unwise to assume the name Of Americans or Know Nothings, for that party bad been able to take but one trick in the presi dential game, and must soon die out. After viewing the ground, it was agreed that the party should change its name from the law and order party to that of the national democ racy.- The democrats had just elected the Pres ident and would have a majority in Congress, and if the pro-slavery party in Kansas should assume the name of national democracy, it would bring them in favor with the administration and with Congress, and at the same time secure to their party the services of the Free State Dem ocrats from the northern States. Time has proved that this was a good more and great ad vantages would result to the party from it. This I wits the history of the pro-slavery party in Kan sas, and under all its names it had remained sound on the goose; andtheeharge that the pro-. slavery men in Kansas has sold out to the free scalers was infamously false. He was glad to inform the pro-slavery men of Platte that the prospects of the party were bright, and that if we will do our duty in the future ns well as we have done it in the past, success was certain. In regard to Governor Walker he said he did not endorse everything be had said, but was not prepared to take grounds against him yet.— Walkerwaa a good manager 'and a heal man, and he thought he understood bim. Ile believed when Walker held his secret councils' with the President and his cabinet that they were chalk ing out a policy for Kansas. The people should remember, said be, that n majority of the 'cab inet were southern men, and he believed that Walker's trip to the northern States niter his consultations with the President and all his talk north about Kansas becoming a free State had to design in it. The object was to get himself en dorsed by the northern press and the Free State papers of - Kansas, and after he had Suceectledin this he could put down the Free State men in Kansas by the strong a rm -of the government, and point to his endorsement IV the northern press and the Free State'press in Kansas for lus justification. .lie-believed in Walker, though be would not. endorse him fully, and believed lie could be managed very easily. In regard to the nomination of ex-Governor Ransom for Con gress, in Kansas, he regarded this the best piece of policy they had yet done. It was a capital move. Ile would get the democrats from the northern States to a man. Ransom wan sound on the goose, as sound as General Calhoun, and he mast not be suspected by the pro-slavery MINI. Mr. Buchanan and his administration were to come down to the work right. and not play false. His sincerity and that of his cabinet was to be tested, and he should and would be made to do right or they would blow him and his adminis tration into ten thousand pieces. They should do right or the national democratic party should bo broken up. for Kansas was determined to have her right. He expressedhintself sanguine about the soundness of Mr. Buchanan, and knew he had to do right or be blown up. The national democracy had elected a large majority to the constitutional convention, and a pro-slavery constitution would be made, and he believed that it would be submitted to a vote of all the people that. were in the territory on a certain day, of which due notice would be giren to the people of Missoitri. When that was done the people must protect their slave property, and get up the same feeling they once had up, and that election would be carried as easily as they had carried any of the other elections. The free State men inKansas were resting under the belief that they had a large majority in the ter ritory, which was n fact, but they were not on their guard; the men of the northern States were not on their guard either, but the pro slavery men were. He conjoined it upon them to keep this matter still and not blab it about,. but lay low and.keep dark, and work for the great stake. Properly managed, success was certain. Ile knew more about Kamm and the pro-slavery party than any one else. lie had spent a large sum of his money, and raised a great deal from others, all for the cause in Kan sas, and professed to know all about it. He had arganii4 more of their lodges and taken more people to them than anpother man, and he knew what won going on.
