in view, frirther than the indulgence in glorifi
cations of the peculiar advantages of the institn

a steam communication with Europe, under the
auspices of that hopeful builder of castles in the

pion of "Southern rights," Governor (laxity A.
' • Wisc.' .We might add, that iq addition to these
momentous and absorbing matters; the propriety
of excluding front Southern Schools. and Colleges,
• • all textbooks, which are'not conformable to the
' narrow standard adopted South of the Potomac,
Is very earnestly and feelingly urged upon the
• attention of the Convention by the fire-eaters and
negro-drivers—the Buforts and the Legrees—
who love the peculiar institution more than they
love their children's welfare and their own future
• happiness. It will be thus seen that the pure
fountains of knowledge are to he poisoned and
defiled by that cleric curse, which not content
with blighting the happiness of millions of poor,
down-troddemand greatly wronged victims of
• tyranny, seeks Co east its shadow in the path of
the student and the scholar. Church—State--
and the balls of learning, all roust bow to the
-•"*.- dark spirit of Slavery; and even the literature
of the country must submit to its Procrustean
exactions. These conventions, composed, as
they generally are,- of Southern planters and
professional men who have passed the summer
in elegant ease at the fashionable watering

places, are in themselves exceedingly tame and
;inactive bodies, the members of which expend
al) the remaining energies that they bring
With them from the summer resorts, in high
toned and laudatory speeches, evidently design
ed to minister to the sectional pride of their
brother slave-holders, and at the same time
showoff their own rhetoric and eloquence. This
movement, which is the subject of the present
'notice, Is very justly ridiculed by a number of
_respectable journals in the Southern Staten, and
= one of them intimates.that if the railroad dime
!, tors on the several lines of travel would refuse
• to - pass the delegates free Of charge, the
Convention would not be attended by a eufficient
. number to form a "Corporal's -guard." But as
the railroads are very accommodating in this
matter, the Convention will be fully attended.
• and as a consequence we may'expect to bear
loud thunder, some time during next month.

people the appointment of delegates, and making

good, must do 'some harm. This Convention has
• had arumeltacetings for several seers, and we chal
lenge any One to point out any advantage which the
South has derived through their labors.
llnt our great objection to them is that they tend
• -to the formation of sectional prejudices—whichought

country as ours. We love that sentiment—no east„j
s as west, no north, no south. We love that sentiment
which causes us to labor for the whole country. We

This book was written before either "Jane
ZYti" or •'Shirley,"- and consequently before
Charlotte Bronze was a name to conjure with.—
Now that her fame is assured—now that she has
passed away beyond the sound of either praise
or blame, and her account wttb time been sealed
up, we hare ono of her first efforts which will
be read by all the world. Her husband .in a
little supplementary preface. sap that the au
thoress made some use of the material of this
volume in " Villette," but as the two stories are
in most respects unlike, he has been advised to
give "The Professor" to the public, and hence
we hare this hook, printed and hound in the most
tasteful manner. We have no doubt it will be
found on the centre-table of every lady in town
who loves to read an excellent tale, well con
ceived and couched in a style that is as attrac
tive here as iu Jane ilyre.

' tion. Hero was a man of great power and the
carefulest culture pleading for a reputation
which he had been all his life long building

before the council of Fire Hundred. proposing
to bestow upon the orator a golden
expressly designated that gift as a reward
for his general integrity and good conduct as a
statesman. The indictment on the other hand.
brought forward by Eschines, alleged among
other things that it was unlawful to mike also
allegations in any of the State documents which
raised the paint whether a falsehood had been
uttered in declaring Demosthenes a man of in
tegrity. In such a gate of the case with such
inducements to elfort, and before such an milli--
ence as listened to him, there earn lie no wonder !

MADELEINE SMETIL—The Englisltand Seto,h
papers contain many articles about the late
poisoning ease. Madeleine Stnith was thought
to have taken passage in the .\ sia for Imerielt,
but this proved to be a mistake. Still it is be
lieved that she has lett the country•: one of the
papers says her father has refused to see her
since the trial. Air Edinburgh letter says that
her training as a young girl bad been very NO
vere. Ilex father kept her secluded from the
world, and suffered her to read none but relig
ious books. When she grew upend entered the
world, she began immediately to reed forbidden
books, including the worst kind of novel-. Of

ceed to Arkansas and Texas. for the purpose of
making selections of grape vine cuttings, list
ing the character of the soil and the aspect in
which such cuttings are found—their local

The Southern Convention of last year appoint
ed a committee of learned men to prepare a
series of text-hooks for use in southern Mahuak.

S. C., on the 18th of May lino; hut not one of

A gchool teacher named Moore. was attacked
and cut to pieces while in school. in Greeniilk

for chastising one of the children of that tinnily
who had written some indecent language in o
young lady's copy book.
The coins, papers. &c., deposited tit the corner
stone of the Philadelphia High School. in 1.42.
were found upon a recent examination to he in a
corroded and decoyed condition. They were
depetiited in a glace jar sealed wait - wax; but the
water bad filtered through the wax and satu
