My introduction to Ireland was not very for
tunate. Having reached Holyhead by rail, I
crossed the chounel inn steamer, expecting to
arrive at Dubliti early in the morning. Owing
to the hours of the tide the steamer delayed sail
ing beyond the usual - time, and in the morning
we were only in sight of the distant hills .of
Wicklow. A fog began first to wrap the tops
of the mountains, and then descending lower, it
came down upon the sea and completely inter
rupted our view: In the midst of this fog our
vessel, dashed onwards, the captain conversing
with the passengers, and no proper look-out
being kept, until suddenly we saw rocks just
ahead. The captain had just time to scream out,
"Stop her," "Hack her," when in a moment we
struck a rock on our side, and a wild scream
was heard from the passengers, and in another
moment we run fairly on the top of a low ledge
of rocks.
Providentially we did not strike against a
bluff bank, or we must have gone down. The
ship being fast, the moment of consternation
passed away, and the officers proceeded to loose
and lower the boats. But so few and so awk
ward were the sailors, and no securely had the
boats been fastened, that twenty minutes elapsed
before one could be lowered. Had the accident
been serious, no help whatever could have been
rendered. On examining the ship it was found
that but little damage had been done. The
rockei were part of a small island called "Ire
land's Eye," about a mile from llowth, at the
entrance to Dublin harbor, and where the Vic
toria was sunk a few years ago. It was also
the tragic spot where Kirwan the artist is sup:
posed to have murdered Isis wife, by casting her
down the bluff rocks.
As the tide was rapidly rising, in about ono
hour and ahalf we wree set afloat; but our officers
knew so little of their proper course. and were
so reckless, that we were driven a few minutes
after almost upon the bluff rocks of Ilowth.—
Some men in a sail-boat waved their hats and
shouted "Stop her!" but the captain paid no at
tention until through the fog we heard directly
on one side the scream of men, women and chil
dren. "Stop her—stop her:" The captain had
just time to order the wheels reversed, when Sr
came within touching distance of a bold, steep
rock. where the water, was many fathoms deep.
The people on the coast had heard the steamer
and raised the note of alarm.
After beating about through the fog we reach
ed the channel, and as the mist cleared away,
we sailed up the beautiful bay of Dublin about
12 o'clock. Right glad wan I to step on the
land again—for suet, carelessnesa iu navigation
I hail never before seen. The pilot blamed the
compass, and I heard hint remark he had joel
wakened it Ur too pointo. I could not tell w1.a.1
he meant until I ,w him leaving the wheel and
kicking the compass
Reaching Dublin, I bad barely time to drive
two miles to the depot of the Southwestern Rail
way, where I took passage fur Cork. The route
out of Dublin runs along the Phenix Park, con
taining grounds beautifully arranged, and in
which stands the —Wellington Testimonial," a
q uadrangular obelisk 205 feet high, and sarcas
tically named by O'Councli"an overgrown mile
mane." About four miles from the city I was
reminded that 1 was in a land of ancient abode
I and civilization, by seeing one of those singular
buildings called '•rotntd towers." This me at
Clondalkin has been' well preserved. It is o 4
test high and 45 feet in circumference—perfect
ly circular, with a •nittnlfer of door or window..
like tip.:::oces at different elevations; and it is
surmounted with an apes-shaped as a conc. The
date and object of these buildings have produced
much speculation and discussion amongst anti-
Ireland is emphatically n country of ruins.
All along the railway from Dublin t.. Cork, the
traveler is reminded of ancient times i.nd cas
tles. ruined abbeys neglected monasteries, ivy
dad walls, crumbling. towers, sm it pith its le•
gem's, claim his attention. Though I had read
the history of Ireland, and thought myself crime
what familiar Rich its general features, at lea:I
so far as descriptions could make one mu. yet I
was surprised at meeting these ruins at almost
every point. Among these I may mention as
worthy of note those of Kildare, Cashel and Kil
mattock. Near Kildare is a large plain or cur
ragli, now used as a race-ground. where once
Armies encamped and battles were fought. here
die Irish army was routed by the Ktuslish in
tittC.; General Porter had his forces Sc this spot
1601, and as late as ISOI, 20..110 insurgents
assembled on'this plain. The town contains the
rains of sa old church, associated with a monas
tery, built in the fifth century by St. Itridgid.
at old writer tells us that a sacred fire was kept
perpetually burning in this monastery, until in
12:20 it was extinguishes' by Henry tie 'Andres.
That soon after being rekindled. it was kept
until the period of the reformation. Here too is
a tine round tower, as also the remains of other
edifices.
Cashel, which is about 95 miles from Dublin
has one of the most interesting groups of ruins
to the British islands. It is a high rock, which
rise, above the contiguous ridge, and is crowned
with a castle. Tradition says that the kings of
Munster, before the Christian ern, bad their
regal fortress here. Among the remains are a
round tower, a small stone roofed church of I
Norman architecture, built in the twelfth cents- I
ry, and a large cathedral, occupying the space I
list wren the others. At 'the west end of the ,I
cathedral is a massive tower, rather a portion of
one,—for about nine years since, being rent by
n .term, a part of it fell to the ground. in the I
church is the torn), of Carmac M'Carthy, king of
Desmond in the 12th century. At the base of
the rock are the ruins of an old abbey and castle,
belonging first to the Benedictines and then to
the Cistercian monks.
Kilmallock is sometimes called the "Balbec of
Ireland," because of the number of the remains
of mansions, castles and ecclesiastical edifices.
The date of its origin is not known, but its name
is supposed to be derived front a saint of the
seventh century; who founded an abbey for reg
ular canons. Before the days of Edward 111 it
was an-incorporated place, and was surrounded
liy , a strong wall with four castellated gateway,.
Two of them' are yet standing. The old houses
were built of hewn stone, three stories high.
and adorned with embattlements and tine
mouldings. Beside the ruins of an abbey and
closed within the tower there is on the outside a
tall steeple rising from a cruciform pile, and
which is said to be part of a Dominican abbey
founded nix hundred years ago.
In passing rough the country I found two
things differ ut from what I had expected.—
First, the la 1 is not so wholly occupied nor so
perfectly cult ted as 1 had fancied. I had
supposed the whole island to be a garden: but I
found was e places and poorly cultivated lands.
Iho country is much more hilly or mountainous
than a garden can be. Ranges of mountains
skirted the view nearly the whole length of the
road. On the east wero the Gaiter mountains.
and the western range is a high peak with a
remarkable notch, called the Devil's Bit. Va
rious legends are connected with this spot. The
Killarney boatmen told me that it was said that
Satan was chasing some s ouls that had just
escaped from purgatory; they fled across this
mountain into the province of Connaught;
whereupon Satan, concluding that Connaught
was about as bad as purgatory, ceased tho pur
suit and contented himself with biting a piece
out of the mountain summit and spitting it. after
them. Similar stories the inhabitants of the
different provinces delight to tell in reference
Acorn other. ,
A second particular in which 1 hnd been
mistaken was as to the apparent poverty of the
people. There is much poverty—there are
poor hovels—but f saw no such degradation I
and wretchedness as writers usually describe.
Mud walls. earthern floors, pigs and chickens
about the doors, I saw in some places: bor . the
people were generally pleasant, cheerful, active,
and more intelligent than 1 had supposed. I
ant informed, however, that Ireland has great
ly changed for the better in this matter in the
last seven years. Labor is in demand, pro
ducts have increased in price, wages are higher,
I and , so far as I could judge, the people arc
improving in every respect.
Arriving at Cork, I found an old city of 90,-
000 inhabitants, Through it runs the river Leo
which Spenser Bas made classical. Time old
city was built on an island made by the "divided
Hood" of this little stream. But now it has
climbed the adjacent heights and spread along
the valley. Bt. Finbar is said to hare been its
first bishop, and to have built a monastery hero,
as well as the church which still bears his name.
The old church has disappeared, but on its site
a new one was erected, which preserve. one of
the old door-ways, built into the new wall. The
church-yard had a peculiar interest to me, be
cause in it rest the remains of Boardman, one of
the first Methodist missionaries to America. A
sketch of his resting-place, with the inscription
on the slab, was presented to me by Mr. Stafford,
who is an accomplished artist.

An Important ..letter.
At a regular meeting of the American State
Council, held at Altoona in April last, Messrs.
John Brotherline, John Covodo, D. IlP:Murtrie,

pointed a committee to solicit from the candi
date,' nominated at Ilarrisburgb, on the . 25th of
March, an expression of their views in regard
to the principles of the American party. Ac
cordingly the committee, through their chair
man, recently addressed the following interrog
atories to :Messrs. Wilmot, Millward, Veeen and
Lewis :
1. Do you hold that in the election or ap
pointment of all officers native born Americans
should be preferred
ti. Are you in favor of the protection of
American labor, American rights, and American
interests
•
3. Are you in favor of the purification of the
ballot box:, a reform iu the naturalization lutes,
the ennetrdeat of a registry law, and the pro
hibition of foreign paupers and convicts landing
upon our shores
4. Are you opposed to any interference of
Church Hierarchies in politics•
5. Are you in favor of Free Schools for the
education of all classes, with the Bible as n text
book used therein 7
Ma. WILMof !I REPLY.
Ea===
GENTLEMEN: Your letter of the sth or May
came to hand daring the sitting of my courts,
immediately on the close of which I left home,
and returned only a few days since. This must
be toy apology for not curlier having respond
ed to your communication.
lam requested to answer certain Interroga
tories propounded to me in pursuance 01 a res
olution of the late convention held at Altoona.
The history of cur state establishes a wise
and safe policy in respect to the point embraced
in your first interrogatory. It will be found
rare indeed, that any except native born citizens,
have held high rtlicial station either in the
'Executive or Judicial departments of Our State
Government; tind the same class, with compara
tively few exceptions, have filled the seats of
our Legislative halls. - .the naturalized citizen
cannot reasonably complain that this tradition
al policy should be preserved. There is nothing
in it, intolerant or .
. prost:iptive; nor will the
enlightened or patriotic citizen of foreign birth
so regard it. It imposes no legal disqualifica
tion. It lakes from him no right. Official
station of right belongs to no man. While I
adhere to this policy as one of wisdom and
patriotism, no American who properly appre
ciates his responsibilities, would neglect an
inquiry into the character and fitness of
candidates presented for his suffrage; nor
could he, without betrayal of the hest inierests
of his country, disregard the claims of
principle involved in his choice. Thus aces
sinus may arise, rbett ah enlightened and
faithful discharge of duty, would demand our
suffrages for the naturalized citizen in prefer
ence to one born on our soil. Understanding
the spirit of your first proposition as not incon
s!stent with the views here expref.sed, I yield , it
n.:• cordial assent.
Are you in l'avor of the protection of Amer
ican labor, ' American rights, and American
interests
To this, your interrogatory, I shall
content ntrolf with a simple affirmative an
swer.
The matters embraced in your third interoga
tory are of the first importance, and demand
the most serious consideration of the patriot
and statesman. The boldness and success With
which frauds are perpetrated upon the Ballot.
Box, hive li.eeme alarming, and unless prompt
ly and effectually checked, must end in the sub
version of our system of Free Government.—
The fovea of Liberty may remain, Ind only as a
cheat and mockery.. glossing over as cruel a
despotism as ever cursed a people.
I would sustain with my whole strength any
and every memoir., wisely devised, to preierve
the purity of oar popular elections. Willful
(rani upon the ballot box is moral treason
against Republican Government: and all duly
convicted ..t being concerned therein, i n addi
tion to other penalties. should be forever dis
qualified front holding office or exercising the
elective franchise.
Doubtless our naturalization laws could be
so amended as to aid in securing purity and
fairness tmr elections; but we should not
weaken our Stoic sovereignty, hylooking to the
Federal Government as the great source of re
form in Ode matter. It belongs exclusively to
the States to regulate this whole question of
suffrage—do prescribe the epplifications of elec
tors—te provide safeguards against frauds, and
inflict punishment fqr assaults upon the integ
rity of the ballot box. Our own State cannot
too early or vigorously exert its constitutional
pow, in respect to these tentter3—vital 119 they
are to liberty and the existence of free Gov
ernment.
It has ever been d source of just pride to the
true American, that his country opened an asy
lum for the oppressed of every :and. God
forbid that we should be so ungrateful for His
blessings, as to refuse to share them with the
honest and industrious of whatever clime or,
country; but it to an outrage upon our hospi
tality, and a violation of international law, for
the Governments of the Old World to ship ear-
goes of criminals and paupers on our shores.
Our Government cannot be too vigilant in
guarding our rights in this respect.
To your fourth interrogatory I answer; that
I am opposed to the interference of Hierarchies
in politics. The office of 11 Christian Minister
is second no other iu dignity and responsi
bility.. I would not detract trout his functions,
or impair the respect due to his character. I.
acknowledge his right, and as a teacher of the
people, I believe it to be his cluty,, to speak
openly and fearlessly against social and politi
cal evils, destructive of public murals and at
war with the interest and happiness of man
kind. In thus publicly speaking. if he trans
cends the proprieties of his place and office, a
safe corrective is tonna in the censure of an
enlightened public. But that a Priestly Order,
invested by the Laity with 11 mysterious twice,
dotal character—with pretensions to extraordi
nary spiritual power—bound together by strong
ties. mid acknowledging 1111 their head a foreign
potentate—that such an Order should enter the
field of politics,. control our elections and influ
ence the policy of our government, is surely
cause for alarm, and should awaken the jealous
vigilance of the American people. It will pro
bably be denied that any such hierarchal influ
ence is brought to bear in our elections. We
should judge with candor, and not condemn
without proof.
We see the American people divided on a mo
mentous issue. The principles of human free
dom or bondage are brought in direct conflict.
Man's inalienable right to life and liberty is de
nied. The dorritie is openly asserted by those
who hold the government in their hands, that
God created the mass of =naiad to be slaves.
In the heat of this great etroggle we see the
strongest ties severed—the ancient political par-
t.es of the country broken, and men of every na
tion and faith divided, save-one. The votaries
of one church alone are united in political au-,
tion. This unify in the midst of otherwise uni
versal division, is truly most remarkable. - From
Maine to Texas—from the Atlantic to the Pacif
ic Ocean—in every city. town and hamlet—un
der whatever circumstances placed, or by what
ever influences surrounded, we find the votaries
of this church arrayed in political action on the
side of slavery. This cannot arise from an in
telligent assent to the principles of slavery; be
cause those principles would reduce ninety-nine
out of every hundred of these men to the con
dition of slaves. Whence are we to look for the
cause of this unity among eo many hundreds of
thous:lade scattered over so wide &surface? Wo
find the votaries of the Catholic Church 118 a
class, among the least. enlightened of our popu
lation, and thus in a condition to yield ready
obedience in all things, to an authority which
they have been taught to respect as of God's ap
pointment. The church of their faith advances
high and extraordinary claims. It is the only
true Apostolic church. It is infallible in doc
trine—miracles, continue to be wrought within
its holy communion—its head is the Vicegerent
of God on earth, and successor of the Apostle to
whom was entrusted the keys of Heaven. It is
a pure Hierarchy. The Laity have little or no
power, all authority being concentrated in the
Priesthood. Again I aski *hence this unity in
political action, among the iotariesof this church,
when every other' enomination of Christians is
divided? In seeking for an answer to this in
quiry, all men will look to the source where the
power resides. When the votaries of the church
of Rome, shall exhibit in our political contests,
the like diversity of views and action, that is
seen among all other classes of our people, then
and not till then, will the public mind be reliev
ed from the suspicion, that hierarchal influences
are mischievously at work in our politics.
It is idle to evade the point, by labored efforts
in defence of religious freedom and the rights
of conscience. No assault is made upon either.
The largest liberty—the broadest toleration—is
conceded in matters of religions faith and wor ,
ship. The ground qLecimplaint Iles here—that
a tlierarchy,investelVtith peculiar sanctity and
powers in the eyes of the Laity, should exert a
spiritual influence to Control our elections, and
give to the policy of our Government a direction
adverse to the wishes of a majority of the peo
ple, not within the sphere of such influence.
No intelligent man will question the fact; that
the late Presidential election was controlled by
the united Catholic rote, If the adherents of that
church had been divided in their votes, as were
all the Protestant sects of our country, the pres
ent administration would never have had en ex-
ist nee. The Slave Power to-day would not bo
master of our tiovernment—promulgating its ale
hurrent doctrines through our judicial tribunal*.
—undertniuing the sovereignty of the States, and
boldly trampling down the element tionstitutional •
rights of the citizen.
it is also apparent to every intelligent obser
ver, that the same unity in the Catholic vote
Is relied upon as the main support of our op
penents in the coming Stole election. Wi,h
them undeniable facts before us, can it be said
that there Is no ground for the strong convic
tion in the minds of the American people, that
hierarchal influences 120 i only interfere in our
politics, but actually control our elections 7 If
the l'rotestant note of our country presented
the same unanimity in oppoailioh, to the pro
slavery Democracy, that the Catholic church
does iu its support, our opponents would dot ha
slow or measured in their denunciation. Indeed,
the chiefs and press of that party, assail with
gross vituperation such Protestant Christian
ministers as openly in the face of day, denounce
from the snared desk the crimes of slavery, and
insist upon the sanctity of the martial anti pa
rental relations, In them, it is a grievous of
fence, to proclaim, in connection with slavery,
the great essential truths of Chrlatianify.—that
Cod is the Creator and father of all men—that
Ile made of one flesh all the nations of the earth
—that Ho is no respecter of persons, but holds
in equal love all His children; and that He will
require of every one the observance of His right
eous law: "All things whatsoever yo would that
men should do to you, do
„ye even as to them."
This alliance between an ancient and powerful
Church, and the slave interest of America Is the
more remarkable, when we impeder the fact,
that the early and authoritative teachings of
that Church are in condemnation of 'Anvers.—
Sow long this strange alliance is to continue I
know not—how long it iv to be successful is for
the American people to decide.
To your fifth interrogatory I answer—that I
am In favor of Free Schools for the education of
all classes; and am opposed to any exclusion of
the Bible therefrom. .
Respectfully yours, D. IV:mut)?
