We need•not to point to Kansas, for that is a
standing monument of their disregard of popular
rights. But we Imiy instance Minnesota ao a
further proof of Ills hostility to popular govern
ment. The people of that territory, in electing
delegates to a convention to frame a Constitu
tion,' have choseit a majority of Republicans.
This, the party leaders saw', would bring in
Minnesota as a Republican State, throwing them
out of all the placas of honor and profit. Hence
it must be prevented; and the country is now
witnessing the spectacle of their bold attempt to
subvert the popular will.
It is one of the vagaries of politics thut such
a party should be called the "Democratic" par
ty. Without a particle of "Democracy" about
it, the great source of its strength is in n name
which it belies and belittles in every art of its
corrupt life.

PITTAIIIMGII, FORT WArir 6: CHICAGO ROAD.
—The first year of the consolidated road is draw
ing to a close, and we learn that the gross reve
nue of the year will reach 52,000,000, consider
ably more than was estimated. The estimate
for next year was fixed some time since at two
Million's; but the receipts for the present year
haiing been so flattering, this estimate will
prove too low.
By a notice in our advertising columns it will
bo seen that the Company will, on and after
August Itith, pay 6 per cent. in stock, on all its
stock for the year ending July Ist.
,Txtz latest dodge, politically, is contained in
the leader of the Union of Saturday, which
charges and the people of Lawrence provoked
Gov. Walker to his late course for the pulpose
of creating an . excitement- in the north = that
would help elect Banks in Massachusetts, and
Wilmot -in Pensylvania Why was not
IValker smart enough, then, to detecr the
trick and foil it by leaving the Lawrence
people alone If the trap was so easily detec

course or it would not resort to such a pitiful
excuse as this:

Our Foreign Correspondence.
]VITSIBLB tr.
Editors Gazette.—l had designed to give full
notes of my tour through Northern Europe, but
this 1 find at present to be utterly impossible.
Traveling as I have been compelled to, frequent
ly by night as well as by day—occupied with
sight seeing—conversation with friends, or with
official duties every moment during the (lax—
scarcely have I had time to jot down rough
notes and first impressions. I have seen much,
very much, in a short apace of time. But
extended remarks, if given at all, must dre
removed for periods of more leisure.
From Antwerp I started by railroad for Han'-'
over, where I had requested Rev. Mr. Jacoby,
superintendent of our German Missions, to meet
me. On the route I stopped first at Mecklin, or,
as it is called in Europe, Malines. This is an
old city, once diitinguished for its manufacture
of Mecklin lace. Our company on entering the
city got into a carriage—were stopped by a sol
dier on guard, but oiler a word from our com
missioner, or guide, we heard him say “Allen,",
and on we. went. On entering the public square
we alighted to see the statue of Margaret of
Austria, and the old Cathedral. Immediately a
great crowd of men, women and bop, gathered
around us, and for a few minutes I could not
understand the cause. Subsequently 1 learned
that the city hadbeen for a few days in great
excitement in reference to the Convent bill.
Thu} windows of the Archbishop's residence had
be'en broken, - and a. general tumult had been
threatened. Some high ecclesiastical officers
had arrived that day, and when we drove
towards the cathedral - they knew not what it
might portend. We saw the old cathedral—
fouzided hundreds of years since, and yet not
finished. Old Spanish buildings—the prison
need in the days of Philip. were also shown to
us. And we slaw the church of Our Lally, which
owed its foundation to a strange story told in
their early legends. An image tla
fell into the river, but, like the Dot
told of in
,ostral hours I ipent in Aix In Chapelle.. I
saw the throne in which Charlemagne sat—the
spot where be is buried—his large skbll preserv
ed in'the church. And then what a host of rel
ics had the priest show me ! There was hair of
John' the Baptist—a tooth of St. Stephen—
pieces of the true cross—and a cloth that had
wiped the sweat and blood from the face of the
Saviour. I looked intently on the face Of the
priest as he shoWed these relics and described
them minutely, o see whether he could possibly
seem to believe these stories. But he had learn
ed his lesson well. I saw, I have not time
even to mention.
Our route lathritugh Cologne, where stands
the great Cathedral, always visited by strangers.
We were now in Prussia, and crossing the Rhine
we hurried onwards. In Hanover I spent the
Sabbath—met Mr. - Jacoby—and happened to
see, the King and Queen, and also the Duke
Constantine of- Russia, who is married to the
sister of the Queen of Hanover. He is evidently
-a man._ of mark—a man for the times—and
should he live, his influence will be felt through
out Europe.
Hamburgh Was our next point, and thence to
Copenhagen. The old Danish Palace was full
of interest—.the memorials of 'the old kings--
the antiquities of the Scandinavians--the old
round tower where Tycho Broils watched the
heavens, and up whose stairway Peter the Great
is said to have driven with a coach and four
-all were objects of great interest. Then I
sailed through those straits of the Skager-rock
and Categat—to pronounce which troubled my
tongue in the days of my childhood—and made
My way to old Horny. After visiting Chris
tina, the:Seat of government—its University,
Museum, palaces and gardens--Frederickschald,
where Charles the XII met his sudden end—
.Barpsberg, withits falls of the Glommen—and
having seen' our missionaries and their labors—
'journeyed Still northward. ' Norway has one
railroad, about /oily miles long. By this I reach- I
ed Lake Mein, with itsbeautifuland quiet scene
ry. On this lake I rode in a steamer nearly one
hundred miles, and found myself north of the
61i(degree of latitude. The North Star was
high up in the heavens, and no night was there,
for it was now the summer solstice. At eleven
o'clock, in a back room in the hotel, we read
and wrote as we would at home a Bile after sun
set, and in a few minutes after two- the sun was
shining again.
From Norway I sailed to England; and cros
sing that island, here 1 am in "mild Ireland."
Objects of interest are all around me. Every
where are ruins of the past—oldeastles, abbeys,
monasteries and churches show the devotion and
activity of past generations. But Ireland is
evidently rising again—the people are active—.
the land smiles with pleity—and signs of pros
perity are everywhere abundant.
But the cars are starting, - anal must close.
• July 6, 1867. . M. S.
Acuorrrir. or Msnizaric Surrn.—We learn
bribe steamer Cirmnntian that Miss Madeleine
Smith; the fast young lady of Glasgow, who was
tried for the murder of her lover, Emile L'An

added that she had taken passage in the steam

Liverpool ercthe 11th inst., and is now fully
due at New:York. * So-there will be a lionne in
New:York who vrill receive some of the honors
hitherto - bestowed upon Mrs. Burdell Counning
ham: Madeleine Smith, however, being young

Dentocritio papers are making them
•selves hoarse in denouncing a certain church in

this; they did a vary silly thing. .
But the papers which speak most harshly of
this case, says the Albany. Journal, have no
.word of condemnation forthose Churches at the

one case—that of Rev. Mr. Boanumax—he was
