the medium of a pencil and slate, in the state

far from feeling repentance for what he has
done, he glories in his revenge, and professes I
that he would pursue the same action Were he I

killing his wife, he had an altercation with her,
in the course of which she struck him with the

Too Mayo election committee, now sitting in I
London, on petition of Col. Higgins to unseat
G. 11. Moore, is the great subject of parliamen
tary attraction. The records of the examina
tion of the witnesses to prove that the priests
cursed all who would not go for Moore, and
headed mobs to intimidate those who would vote 1
for Higgins, and the conduct of the mobs - under
the excitement of their harangues, whiskey and I
the love of a row, quite equal any things in . ,
Carleton. And as the witnesses were able to
give the words of the curses and harangues in
Irish, the Londoners iu greneral, and the VIM
' hers of Parliament in particular, have had some
rich exhibitions.
Dr. Maellalo is awaiting examination ns to
his share in it. Meantime, his chaplain, the
Bev. Mr. Conway, figures away as the great
ringleader. Getting up on a wall as the crowd
passed, he exclaimed : "The curse of God, and
the Church, and the country, now and evermore
rest upon the traitor who will vote for Higgins."
This in 'Gbh. Another priest, Ryan, declares
from the altar, "Ile will never give the rites of
the Church, when dying, to any who will not
vote for the man of the priests, Moore." Rut
the amount of drinking, cursing, beating, riot
ing, and all kinds-of wickedness this election
will put on record, to inconceivable; and when
the volume that contains it is' published, much
SS was believed about the present, and known

peeple.
LAMM SALEO OF PUBLIC LANDS AT SPRlNG
rutin, MALtsovnt.—'f he safes of public hinds iu
this dietriet, within the last sixty days, have
reached 400,000 acres—entered almost exclu
sively by persons from the free States—Oldo and
Pennsylvania bitg largely represented among
the purchasers. This amount of entries exceeds
that of the three previous years at the Spring
field office! Our readers will recollect that the
land register at Warsaw, published in this paper,
some weeks ago, that 500,000 acres had been
entered in that district within about the same
length of time, and that the office was in conse
quence closed until further notice.. About two
thousand acres per day are being entered in the.
Jackson district.. At Palmyra there art' only,
we are informed, about 60,000 acres of 'govern
ment lhnd now subject to 'entry, In ilte north
western part of the State, emigrants are 'crowd
ing in from lowa, where binds .have become too
high for actual . settlers to purchase. They
1
have conseq entry turned their attention- to
Missouri, where ' lands at reduced - prices! con
be .had, and a ' milder climate and . a more
fertile soil off r greater ieducements to fanners . .
The prospect of Missouri becoming a free State
is 14 settled conviction in the minds of the peo
ple of the north, and to this significant fact we
owe this unplielieled activity in our land mar
ket.—St. Botha Democrat. .
AN - liiirroritis . PAaALLIG.—The Richmond
Enquirer, referring to the Presidential election of
1860, says, "Southern Men of all parties are as
lo
true to the ' institution dr - Tery as was ever
knight to his lady, or moth ;to her child;" and
that "to the Democracy of 1 North they look,
API Napoleon looked to*UraiitAiy at Waterloo," to
give them the victory. . Let us hope-that the
idea which this comparison, suggests may be re
alised. Napoleon looked frivolo for Grouchy, who
came not, and was beaten. It may be added that
Grouehy had been placed by Napoleon in such.

Tue &circa. Pomona° Casa.—That sudden
death means murder, and that mirrder must. be
comidited by poison, are as firm articlea of
faith in Great Britain now es they are in the
United States. There was on trial, in the first
week of the month, at Glasgow. a Miss Made
leine Smith, charged with having poisoned a
Frenchman, her, •lover, named L'Angeller. She
is young. handsome, rich, and well connected,
so that the trial eiciteda great dealer attention.
The evidence against her, so fez as we have seen
it, amounts to little, and would not cause the
condemnation of even a man in America, unless
there was a very strong desire felt to hang'
somebody, without any reference to the seta
sed'a guilt or innocence. It is true that she
bought arsenic, but then she used it for the im
provement of her complexion. That deadly,
agent is a great beautifier of the face, giving to
it that peculiar delicacy which gentlemen much
admire, and which, therefore, ladiesmuch desid
erate. In Vienna, that most voluptious °Celtics,
the women use arsenic as a cosmetic on a great
scale, but it would be bard to suspect them of
murdering their . fricnds because they purchase
the deadliest agent known in the annals of crime.
There is no-chsrge that ought to be more care
fully examined than that of .murder by the use
of arsenic. Probably three-fourths of the
charges thus made are utterly devoid of founda
t ion, and originate only in diseased imsgi tuition a.

TRAVELIND FOR PLEASURE. VIEWED MEDICALLY.
—ln the last number of the Boston Medical
World we find some suggestive hints on this
subject, the pith of which we will endeavor to
give in a few lines :
"The writer thinks that in' our country there
is much travel, ostensibly for health, vheta, in
his opinion, the injury far surpasses the gain:
Inexorable fashion says we must go from our
home in dog days; and in obedience to. her man
dale there is axush in all onr cities and towns,
from the metropolis dowit to the smallest village,
to the place where this "goddess" specially pre
sides. This is the season when the quiet and
comfort of borne are the most healthful and
'necessary. But instead of this, we find people
determined to exchange the large, airy, brick
walled rooms of the town, and the cool matress
and fine linen, for the heating cotton, greasy
feathers and dirty sheets of a tavern, or pent tip
village, or watering place, hotel or boarding
house."
GREAT MAIL. ARRANGER/INT IN •WISCONRtN.-•
The Milwaukie Wisconsin, for the encouragement
of those who have corresporidence' witWthe
northern portion of Wisconsin, relates some facts
in relation to the delightful certainties of the
mail arrangements in that region. The mail
for Superior and the Lake towns therein sent up
the Mississippi to St. Paul, and then is despatch
ed to its destination on the backs of half breeds.
Mr. Fargo, who was the first man through last
spring, in a buggy, found some four or five U.
S. mailbags, hanging on trees, at the mouth of
Kettle River, where the carrier had left them,
rather than carry them through in bad weather,
The water had trickled into some of them, and
they were pretty badly wet. The carrier was
sorting out the wet letters, throwing them into
the river, arid putting the dry ones. into, othei
bags, thus releising himselfof the extra weight
of moisture. Perhaps he wanted to test the
different modes of conveyance, by sculling. some
by water.
