The NesiYork papers of Tuesday merely men

"In the Devlin Habeas Corpus case, after argument

.
wAbout a Mile from town we !band governor in
hit carriage, with G.' W. Broirzd Calmer.
Mr-Walker told us that ha Ilded II anent these
revolutionary . proceedings, and the I:baited Stems

'',:lTlitibltizons. of Lawrence Ewa a meeting during
the afternoon, .sad dispatched a messenger to Brown
amiCollamer to inform them that they were not an
thorlied to act for the town. After this meeting the
people dispersed. The appearance of the troops, be
thew purpose what it might, did not seem to disturb
the equanimity of the citizens of the threatened town.
In the evening a meeting was called to ratify the
-rebreeding s of the Free State Convention, at Topeka.
After. giring the entire action of the convention •
.111111111MOUill ratification, and the ,nominees a most
hearty endorsement, some attention was paid to the
fart of an army being quartered scr near to them. It
was maintained that the organization of the town hid
only
,been to Rouse ends essential to the 'veil-being
of the inhabitaute that could nut be so easily reached
in any tither method; that the movement did not look
bsjoud Lawmnoe eonteraplate any collision with
other linthorities; that Gov. Walker had made a de
**Mt .upon them without investigating the matter
thoroughly or giving them timely notice of his opin
ion of their action—and that no law had been vio.
laced by the action of the people.
A resolution was unanimously adopted. that. the
act of Gov. Walker in quartering upon the town in
time of peace an army, ens illegal, unconstitutional
and infamous, and deserving only of cool contempt."
• 'Nbw, herein is nothing about a determination
to resist the U. S. troops. On the contrary, the
eititeniif.Lawretnie seem - to look upon the Gov
emcee. foray among them with the same con
tainpt that the people elsewhere do.
-
We - have detected these telegraphic lies so
often that we place but little reliance, now, upon
telegraphic news, and we caution our readers to
doubt them in all cases where Kansas orpolitics
may be concerned. It seems extremely difficult
for some of the telegraphic agents of the Asso
elated- Press to give anything like an impartial
statement in such cases.
Tax report sent by telegraph from St. Louis
that the*moclutic Convention of Kansas had
endersed*...Walker's course, was not convect.
The fellnAigivits the resolution adopted;
Rerofeed, - That the National Democratic party of
Kansas Territory pledges keen' to the support and
maintenance of his Excellency, Robert J. Walker. in
preserving the peace and harmony of Kansas, and in
executing the laws of tho country.
It will then be seen that the promised support
it limited to "preserving the peace and harmony
of Kansas, and to executing the !awe of the
country," a vague promise which any 'Conven
tion might pass without committing Itself. A
correspondent of the St. Louis Republican also
sets the public right about another resolution of
the Convention:
"The resolution to instruct our nominee to support
the Constitution framed in September next, whether
it be submittal to the people or not, was laid on the
table, not Leconte the concretion nue in off sontit
tinig the Constitution to the people, but beciusse the
paStsgo'of such a resolution was regarded as unne
cessary wd injudicious, and we, considered as oper
ating to tramnel tend iucumber the nun:dues, by jai.
posing on him a question which was beyond his
dutleo."

we find in The Chartesion Courier and which•has

passages in this protest signed by a large num
ber of gentlemen, contain the gist .of the whole
paper and are couched in the following language:
"When our Northern fricado undertake to instruct

"Non tall anzlno, nes defousoribos Use'
"We are entirely inaccessible to instruction upon

Asonnumor Rowena writes a very venomous
but silly and otherwise weak letter to the N. Y.
Trgoune, in answer to the lute article in the N.

admits many of the facts mated but denies oth
ars, among thenithose relating to his treatment
of itedini and the promulgation of the Inimac
nista Conception, the main denial consisting in
his averment that there are no measures on foot
at Rome' or elsewhere to procure his removal,
resignation or retiracy. Having copied the ar
ticle from the Punss, - we state the denial as a
matter of justice to the Archbishop, merely add
ing that, judging from the tone of his letter, he
Sicilia to hayelost the dignified bearing which
formerly characterised him.
Peass."—This is the name of the paper
the first number of which Mr. Forney is to imuo
sometime within a week. He has done-us the
falibr to send us his prospectus. We are very
happy to see this movement of Mr. Forney and
this very pretty little fight that is on hand for
the dog-days. Look out for lively times when
Mr. Forney, the unappreciated and the depreci
ated, opens his batteries--hot shot, grape and
canister—upon the Pennty/Panian, the organ of
the President and the office-holders. In the
words of the Almanac—" Expect—much—ligh
tning—about—this—time." Won't Mr. Forney
go politically to the root of the matter and re
form? Why not?
Ton Pennsykanian, in reviewing two new
books on the Slavery Question, by clergymen,
one for Slavery anti the other against it, sayi:
" We question the utility of their publications as
ministers of the gospel. Lot the question of slavery
be argued by politicians, for it Is only as a political
question that it CACI ever be met in our country."
This is a reversal of the old plea. The bur
den of the democratic plaint in old times was
that Slavery was a moral and religious question
and not a political one. It was half right,
then, and the other half, now. Slavery is a mor
al and religions as well as political question,
and must be met in all three of its aspects.
PACKER'S PROSPECTS its BRADFORD COUNTY.—
The postmaster at Towanda, Bradford County,
Idr. John G. Freeze, has been obliged to resign
hia post in consequence of his inability to Sup.
, port ' 'himself and a paper called the Bradford
Batcs, which he had agreed to publish in con
aideration of the official patronage he enjoyed.
It is therefore evident that the Packer nigger
drivers hare no foothold in old Democratic Brad
ford; and that, since Judge Wilmot is in the
field, his majority can easily be estimated by
taking the whole number of votes in Bradford
and deducting therefrom a few dozen postmas
ters scattered throughout the county.
Wrasuorr ClTT.—This town stands ne the
very portals of Kansas, and is therefore a verj
important commercial point. Quite a number
of Pittaburghers have settled there, among
whom we notice our old friend Jowly ltrAtria,
formerly of the firm of Leech, AUAlpiti S Co.
Although less than six months old it is growing
very rapidly,•and the census just taken shows
a population of 985.
Se' TOE N. Y. Tribune !aye that the bogus
lagislature of Kansas. never granted a charter to
the people of Lawrence. Hen-e there was no re
sistance to territorial authority in framing a
charter for themselve6.

The whole amount of land appropriated by the
General Government for educational purposes to
the let of January, 1854, was stated to be 62,

such lands when first brought into market, rep-,

but which, at this time could At be worth less
than $200,000,000. The amount of donations

that bad been given by State Legislatures. Mr.
Bernard rend from a table exhibiting the dona

within the last half century, amounting to up

Tim word "doughface." so long used at the
North, in connectitn with gentlemen who were
noted for servility to slavery, is now applied to

their publishers , a solitary democratic organ
cannot live without appealing to the charities of
tae party.
