We/LINNET SNODORABS: of Mifflin Double Murder, Outride and Arson. We have to chronicle one of the most horrible tragedies ever committed in this city. At about 4 o'clock yesterday morning, the mansion occu pied by Nicholas T. Horton, Esq., in Ohio - ave nue, at the bead of Vine street Hill, was discov ered to be on fire. Judge Parker, whose resi dence is upon - the opposite aide of the way, was aroused by the screams of the inmates of Mr. Horton's house, and speedily dressing himself he rushed. to the scene, when upon entering the hall he discovered a gentleman named Concklin endeavoring to remove the prostrate body of Mr. Horton. The smokewu suffocating, bat between them they succeeded in carrying their charge to the lawn, when it was discovered that be was bleeding profusely from a cut inflicted in the head, and a dreadful gash given evidently by the downward stroke of some sharp weapon in the left groin, and which hnd severed the femoral artery. He appeared sensible, but was speech. less, and in a few moments breathed his last. In the meantime, the excitement had spread, and some firemen from the Mohawk engine house arriving upon the spot, the fire was soon extin guished, and suspicion having fallen upon a serv ing man named Joseph Loeffler, who had for up 1 wards of two years been engaged in the family of Mr. Horton, somepersons hastened to a house on the corner of Vine and Green streets in which I Loofner's wife resided. In a few minutes a1ter ,..,,r,,i, weds, however, and while the part assembled in front of the house, were yet ins tate of hor rid bewilderment, Loeffler was see staggering towards them from a neighboring ore bleed ing profusely from a cut - in the han and a hor rid gash across the throat. Some f the party advanced to meet him, but ho sun upon the grass upon his hands and knees. They trued the blood loan apple tree, beneath which they found a large sharp butcher-knife, and a razor. With the former he had inflicted the fatal blow which had deprived Mr. Horton of life, and with the latter he had attempted to accomplish his own destruction. When interrogated as to wheth er he had committed the arson and murder,, he nodded (for ho was speechless) assent, and also that he bad out his own throat. In the meantime, the party who bad first start ed in pursuit of him. arrived at the residence of his wife, but found the door of the room locked. Subsequently they burst it in, and there, stretch ed nearly naked upon the bed, but with her shoes on her feet, they. beheld the dead body of the ill-fated wife of the murderer of Mr. Horton, no wound upon her person, but otherwise ex hibiting marks which made it evident that she had died from strangulation. The wretched man, Joseph Loeftter, was re, moved to the Commercial Hospital, where at a late hour last night he lay in speechless agony, the attendants expecting momentarily that he would breathe his last. He lied previously sig nified by signs that his motive for committing this double murder, &Weide and arson, was jeal ousy of his wife and Mr. ilarton, and after being taken to the Hospital, he succeeded in tracing upon a elate the intelligible characters that he had reason to believe his wife on the day previ ous had given him poisoned butter upon his bread, and which hadcaused the altercation that had led to her murder, after which-he had hasten ed to the house of Mr. Horton, in the front base ment of which be usually slept,.where ho kindled the fire with the intention of burning the house I and its inmates, but meeting Mr. Horton, who was aroused by the smoke. he inflicted the fatal stab, and then rushed-forth into the orchard to consummate hit own destruction. Joseph Ladner, the murderer, is barely 22 years of age, and is said to have on several or casione exhibited a violent and ungovernable dis position. He was a German by birth, but has lived in this country for yean. Francisca, his ill-fated wife, was a beautiful German girl of some twenty summers. Her maiden name was Koehler, and itwas by title name that both her self and husband wen moat frequently called. She had contrieted, the ill-fated marriage but,a short eight months, and - Wis five months advanced in pregnancy. To a beautiful and expressive face, and a form faultless in Its symetry, she is r said have combined the more lasting charms of amiability of disposition and a singularly— for her station—refined and cultivated mind.— Ole. Cost., Wednesday. 1!..1.001111. FAMINE 1N VIIINA.—The Friend of Chino, of May 9th, received by the Overland Mail, says that the famine prevailing in that country ex ceeds all that the oldest living man has ever. witnessed. The rebels are making progress, the capital of the province of gwang-81, Hwel-Lung, eying fallen into their hands. In the province ,of Kwangtvng, the famine ill so mare, that even the woman are forming „themselves into bands of robbers, have seised the sword and gone forth plundering in order to obtain suste nance. During a einem storm the house, In which there was d consider able numberof guests, was struck by lightning, with the loss of two lives, a number of others receiving injury. It appears that the lightning struck a flagstaff erected upon the top of the house on the Fourth of July last. It shattered the pole, entered the house, and reaching the bell-wires followed them in different directions over the house, tearing t away the plastering, making holes in the floor, with much other damage. At the time of the stroke, Mr. W. H Smith, of Cambridge, was sitting upon the portico, with his chair on the hind legs and the back of hie head against the outside blinds of a window. He was, apparently, watching with admiration the storm, his eyes being towards the cloud. The powerful fluid descended by the bell-wires to the window, through which it passed into the back part of the head of Mr. Smith. After the shook had passed he was still sittingin his chair, and apparently watching the clouds with his eyes half closed, but those who looked upon them knew that death was there. For two or three hours attempts were made, by applying cold water and by other means, to restore life, but in vain; the vital spark had fled. The only mark that could be found was a hole in the back of the hat and of the head, about as large as a small shot. There was, also, discoloration of the abdomen, where the fluid had probably departed. Mr. Blandon, of Bethelem, fi. 11., the clerk. of the house, was standing at the desk, perhaps twelve feet distant from Mr. Smith. Ohe shoul der was against the wall, and received the fatal fluid as it descended by a bell-wire. It passed through the body and out at the foot, shattering the foot and setting the stocking on fire, no that it was burning when he was reached. Hs was killed instantly.—Bost. Trout 1332711 VOLUME LXX----NUMBER 287. Tee Free State Convention held at Topeka on the 15th, was numerously attended and harmo nious in its deliberations. After discussion, it was resolved to adhere to the Topeka Constitu tion, to organize in every precinct, attend the polls, and vote for members of the Territorial Legislature to be chosen in August. If the Free State men do so, end have half a fair chance, they will carry the Legislature beyond question. M. F. Parrott, Esq., of Leavenworth, former ly of Dayton, Ohio, was nominated as the Free State Candidate for. Congress. Mr. Parrott was formerly.a member of the Ohio Legislature and was then a Democrat: lie is an able man, and has been prominently identified with the Free State party in Kansas from the first. file pros pect of an election is good; . . . Gov. Robinson and other influential citizens of Ltiwrence returned from the Topeka Conven tion on Thursday.. The proceedings were much approved, and harmonized some differences in regard to the policy to be pursued, which had sprung up among Free State men. Col. Lane was also in Lawrence. Emigration is still pouring in. Crops look promising, though back from the Misioriri some suffering from drouth. Corn has come on won derfully within a few weeks, and is now much larger than in this section of Ohio. Tow Cozen or Diatocater.—"That distinc tion is plain and palpable, and it has been the rule of civilization and ristianitydhe world over, that wherever any one man, or set of men, were incapable of taking care of themselves, they- should consent to be governed by those who were capable of managing their affairs for them."—Speech of Senator Douglas. This is the real creed of the sham Democracy, although Senator ttouglas is the first man who ham ticknowledged it fearlessly. We thank him for it. If there were more Douglas' in his party we should not be troubled with them long. The doctrine which Douglas here advances, is pre cisely that of every despot, autocrat and tyrant upon earth. There is not one of them who did not think himself better capable of taking cure of the people than the people themselves.— Charles Stuart would have beeu delighted to have heard a Republican utter that doctrine.— Bishop Land would have canonized him, and a committee of slaveholdors ought to present the great Democratic leader with a service of plate. —Cin. LAnon MIRAr tinotreas.—A gentleman who seemed to be conversant eith the facts, had in formed the Fredericksburg Herold that Richard Baylor, Esq., would make on his Sandy Point estate, lying along James River, hew!, thousand enshels of wheat this season! And that Mr. Allen, whose estate or estates border on the same river, would make thirty thousand bushels of whew: Mr. Allen is represented to have made as much as 25,001 bushels heretofore. We pre sume he is one of the largest wheat giowers in the State. Mr. Baylor has also a large estate on the Rappahannock. some 5,000 acres, if our meiory serves correctly, and in all probability grows more wheat and corn than any other man in Virginia.—Richmond Whig. IMPORTANT TROW KANSAS. —The Lawrence Re publican says, thst the state convention: finished its session at Topeka, Tuesday, July 16th.— Every district and neighborhood almost, in the whole of Kansas, was fully represented; almost two hundred delegates were present. The utmost harmony and enthusiasm prevail ed. The Topeka constitution and, State organ isation was unanimously endorsed. A strong series of resolutions was unanimously adopted. The. Topeka constitution is to be re submitted at the August election to every bona fide resident of Kansas. Marcus J. Parrott was renominated for Congress. The census returns show a population of fifty thousand in habitants.—St. Louis Democrat. lIIZILY at eledtione in England seems re duced to a system.. Mr. Monekton _filines a poet by choice and a senator by election, Tory naively states that so accustomed had his con stituents been to bribes that they sent him law yers' letters threatening him with prosecutions if he did not remit them their wall allowance of £3 per Tote by returner post. Mr. Wyld states that the petition against his return . for Bodmin was got up by a tradesman, who stated his sole object to be to advertise his boots and, shoes. OZoaoa PATTEN, clerk In a storein SL Louis, having applied opprobrious epithets to a seam stress named Nebeca McCor d, living in another part of the house in which he resides, the en raged needle-woman gave him a moat energetic and effective cowhiding, after which Patten got a knife, and challenged her to renew the con flict, and si she was actively complying stabbed her near the heart, it is thought fatally.
