comments. I am not opposed to having my
conductlaid before the publio by any reporter
for the press. The reporters and the press are
calculated to do ajmerviee to the public if they
confine themselvek to the truth. If a watchman
in Pittsburgh at,rested you and put you in the
tombs wrongfully or mistakingly, it is norc.ason
why you should charge other otticers with par.
tiality in the discharge of their official duties;
officers have many duties imposed upon them
that are nrqileasatit to themselves, and difficult
and dangerous to per 4m. Therefore the press
should be careful no to turn public odium on
them without a very) reason. You say that
there are persons Vrsell liquor in Collins
township t
on Sunday. f it. is so, Ido not know
it; and am as ready to enforce IP c law against
them as „ your persecuted landlady of the
Johnston House, - in East Liberty.
The licensed houses are under wholesome re
•strietions, and no man who has any regard for
his standing as the guardian of the public mor
als will sell liquor to a drunkard or on the Sab
bath. The unlicensed houses where liquors are
retailed Mu the ones which sell the most to those
who ought not fo have any. If you will examine '
the proceedings of our Court of Quarter Sessions
you will Sad Last a majority of the cases brought
there come directly or indirectly from grog
shops. If these places were closed up, in one
year you would find a perceptible decrease in
crime, and, a large reduction in the expenses of
Allegheny county, Why is it that our jail is
nearly full the year round? The Board of Li
censers are ready to hear remonstrances. If the ,
people will see to it they may have the right I

they believe the present license law wrong, let
them petition the next legislature for its repeal.
In conclusion I have to say that assaulting '
