ALLEOF.L. REVIVAL or Tile SLAVE THADE.—
altar". or' Lords, Tursday, June 30.—Lord Broug
ham wished to ask a question of his noble friend
i the Earl of Clarendon) relative to a subject
which had excited much alarm among those who,
like himself, were friends of the African race,
and who hoped they had seen the end of that
great scourge—the Slave trade. It was under
stood that a body of West India planters had
approached the noble Viscount at the head of
the Government, swilled urged him to facilitate 1
the ireportntim into our colonies of free negroes
from the Coast of Africa. It was also under- 1
stood that nosssores of the Same sort were con
templated by he colonial interests of France mill
Spain. and it was even stated that the Emperor
Napoleon had given permission to a house at '
Nlpirseilles to lit out an expedition for importing
41 000 free negroes, as they were called, into
phe French colonies. One vessel: it was alleged,
bad already sailed to Quidah, on the coast..of
'Africa. well known as a Slave trading port—the
very port, indeed, front which the King of Da
homey formerly corniest on that infernal traffic.
No wonder, then, that alarm tint been excited
at the prospect of such an expedition to the port
of Quidah, with the professed object of entitling
negroes to take ship and be conveyed over to the
French colonies. It was well known that one of
the most remarkable acts of the first Napoleon
was his decree for putting down the French
Slave Trade—our ancient allies, the Bourbons,
having altogether omitted to take such n course.
its tett assured that the present Emperor of the
French would not, by pursuing an opposite
course, tarnish the glory of a policy which re
fleeted ao mach honor upon his illustr,•.us pre
decessor. It was also said that th importation
of free negroes into Cuba was to encouraged
by the Spanish Government. :sin , there was a
great difference between any nieasure having for
its object the importation of free negroes into
Cubs on the one hand, and a measure, the ob
ject of which was their importation into the
French or the English colonies upon the other
In the case of the latter Slavery had for (+nine
dote been abolished, so that free negroes
could not be mothered after their importation.—
The free negroes who were importeff into Cuba,
however, might in reality be compblled to un
dergo a state of endless bondage, and that being
the case he hoped his noble friend at tho head of
the Government would be enabled to give him
some assurance that the new Government of
Hereon was treading in the footsteps of those
among its predecessors who had shown a dispo
sition to put down the Slave trade, and was not
following the example of those by whom a con
trary policy had been pursued: That a diaposi
tion existed in Brasil to put an end to the die
graceful traffic in slaves he entertained no doubt,
and the course , , which the Government of that
country had taken in reference to the subject
- was such as in his opinion redounded greatly to
its credit. When persons emigrated front this
country to the colonies care wns taken that they
should be provided with sufficient accommoda
tion o t n hoard the vessels in which they were
conveyed. Medical attendance wits nfforded
them, a vigilant superintendence was exercised
at the various Customhouses in their regard, se
curity being taken that they should be landed at
the port to which they intended to emigrate.
In the case of those free negroes, however, who
were to be shipped on the coast of Africa no
such precautions would be taken, and the con
sequence would be that great abuses would arise.
Such a state of things should not, hecontended,
be allowed to prevail. Security should he taken
that those negroes should be landed at the port
for which they were bound, and thatwhenerer
they became dissatisfied with their new position
they should be enabled to return to their own
country. Since the abolition of the Slave trade,
what he might term the innocent commerce of
Africa had increased to a considerable extent.—
In the year 1855 upwarde of £1,500,000 worth of
goods had been exported from this country to
these ports in Africa which wereiot in our posses
pion or under the dominion of France. while goods
to the value of £250,000 had been exported to
Sierra Leon and other English eettlements on
the African coast. Now, nothing could, in his
opinion. have a greater tendency to check that
growing commerce thin the encouragement of
the traffic in slaves, and ho hoped, therefore, to
receive from the Government some assurance
both as to the intentions of the Spanish and Per
tuguese Goveniments, and as to the project which
had been brought under the notice of his noble
friend at the head of the Government.
The Earl of Clarendon, who was very indis
tinctly heard, expressed his almost entire con
currence in the observations which bad just
fallen from his noble and. learned friend. He
regretted, however, that he was not in a posi
tion to give an answer to the various questions
which the noble and learned lord had put to him,
because, although the noble and learned lord
had given him notice that he was about to call
his attention to the Blare trade,he had not mention
ed to him the particular branch of the subject to
which his remarks would be directed. He had
certainly seen by the public prints that a depu
tattoo hadawaited upon his noble friend at the
head of the Government in connection with the
question,, but he was not quite aware of the
precise nature of the proposal which had been
made to his noble friend, or of the answer
which he had given to that deputation. He
felt, however, perfectly assured, from the ante
cedents of his noble friend, and from the energy
which he bad always evinced in the suppression
of the trafftelinf slaves, that ho would give no en
couragement to any proposition by the • opera
tion of which that traffic would be likely to he
increased. As regarded the ship to which his
noble and learned friend had referred as having
sailed from Marseilles to Quidah for the impor
tationof free - tiegreetrher Majestey's Govern-
Mint had no official information of tlie—eircum
stance, and a ship could hardly have sailed from
Marseilles for such a purpose without their re
ceiving some information on the subject.

bringing among her crews native Krooman, who
had been taken on board nt Dix Cove, as a fore
mast hand. The fears of this native African
had been excited on the passage by the sailors,
who gave him to understand that he would be
sold as a slave when he reached the white man's
country. When the vessel hauled into the At
lantic dock, a monkey on board attracted a cu
rious crowd, but was forgotten soon by the supe
rior attractions of the African. with a pair of
huge ivory bracelets upon his wrist,. Seeing so
many white and strange faces he became alarmed
and running into the forecastle threw off all his
clothing except a blue jumper, and then sprung
into the rigging, and with the agility of a mon
key ran up to OLe fore royal yard, where ha
perched himself, and by his manner bid defiance
to all white folks. A naked African in such a
position soon drew a large throng of spectators
the mate tried every means to induce him to
cotne down, but without effect; to the mate's ,
commands he would make but one reply. "me
dies, the dies," and by his gestures intimating
that he would cut his throat before he would be
taken. He remained on the yard for about three
hours, the excited erowsl hooting, yelling and
throwing stones at the poor creature, to increase
Ids alarm of course. He tinnily told the mate
he would come down if "white man go 'way," ,
or "Caren come." The vessel was hauled away i
from .the Jerk to get rid of the mob, but at
length three "bumpers," or Longshoremen went
on board, and in defiance of the mate's remon
strances, climbed the rigging to force the Kroo
man down. Their efforts to catch 14m, how
ever were wholly in vain; he ran fronisone yard
arm to another, and sprang about among the
lifts and braces like a cat, defying all attempts
to reach him. At sac time ho dropped from the.
outer end of the royal yard arm, and caught the
topgallant lift, alighting safely upon-the yard
below. These wretches, finding he was too spry
for them aloft, thee descended to the deck, and
[nothing the Mate aside, seized the topgallant
braces and began to surge, to pull and slack up.
and swing the yard back and forth in the most
violent manner, the xegro clinging with might
and main to the yard said lift. the crowd on the
dock the theantimeyelling like fiends, and await
ing to see him thrown from the jewel. The po
lice were called, but could not or would not dis
perse the rowdies. At last, worn out, by his
exertions to save his life, as a sudden jerk of the
braces was given by the scoundrels on deck, the
poor fellow was thrown from the yard, and
striking the braces fell into the water, a distance
of seventy or eighty feet. Ile barely escaped
the rail ut the vessel in his descent; had he
struck it, or fallen on the deck, he would have
been killed instantly. Some boatmen now at
tempted to rescue him from the water, hut be
dove as quick an n flash, and ewimming under
water, came up a !song distande off. They pur
sued hits. however, and seizing hint by the ivory
rings on 1113 wrists. endeavored to get him into
the boat; Litt he resisted witlt all his might, and
cried out. -Me die! Me die!" He was finally
got on hoard, anti to satisfy him that their mo
tives were friendly, one of the boatmen pulled
off his own shirt and pantaloons and put them
upon him. This immediately quieted his fears,
and he surrendered himself to his new friends,
who, to escape the mob, rowed hint to the cutter
Washington, where he was receivetrand cared
for by Lieut. Kellum. He is called John. Davis,
and made our Reporter understand that he came
from Ulentalmo-taboo; that he had been two
menthe and n half on beard the brig. and had
not been paid his wages. Capt. Faunce wilt

DAP-sr/Fn. RAILNAGAD ACCIDENT IN' ENGLAND. •-
The London Trmes of June 30th; gives the fol
lowing particulars of a dreadful accident that
occurred upon the North Kent Railroad upon
the previous Sunday night:
'•The terrific collision which has caused so
great a loss of life as that of eleven persons, and
which has inflict de injuries, more or less seri
ous, ou upwards of thirty others, occurred n
few minutes before eleven o'clock on Sunday
night, between the Blackheath and Lewisham
stations.
The Sunday traffic on the North Kent railway
in very heavy, and for the necessary accommo
dation of persons returning from Gravesend, and
other places of Sunday resort, it is usual to run
two late trains at short internal=--at 9. 15, P. M,
and it 30. p•. M.—from Strom] to London. The
time railvilay is worked on Tyler's electric si j
inal system: the simple explanation of which is,
that the station master at one station must not
allow a coming train to pass before the loot de
parted train hat been telegraphed clear of the
nett Stat.., The system, properly carried nut,
would prevent lite passibility of accident.
It appears that the ft, 15 train from Strood
left at the time appointed for its departure, and
passed through Blackheath tunnel without any
thing having occurred to urreat its progress,
but on nearing the Lewisham station,. which is
only one mile from Blackheath, the driver
found the signal against hint, and pulled up the
train just before corning to the platform. The
signals were kept on, and the second guard was
sent back with his red lamp to prevent the pos
aibility of the expected 9. 30 P. M. op train com
ing upon them. Several passengers alighted,
but the large majority observingthe precautions
which had been taken, kept their seats in fan
cied security, until suddenly, anti without more
than a few seconds warning, shell. 30 P train
man heard rushing towards them.
Before any movement of the standing train
could be effected by its own engine driver, the
coming train ran into violent collision with it.
The effoct was perfectly frightful. The engine
of the 9. 30 P. M. train struck the break van of
the 9. 15.1'. 51. train with a forceso great that it
lifted the ponderous machine off the rails to a
level with the body of the next carriage—an
open third Claes, filled with passengers—along
which it swept, doubling up and crushing to
death almost all the unhappy occupants, and
seriously :injuring those who escaped with their
lives. For a few moments the energies of all
the persons near the station were completely
paralyzed by the horrors of the scene; but no
soon as the dreadful el:erecter of the accident
was ascertained. assistance was sent for, and
the best means at hand were adopted to extri
cate the wounded and the dead.
The sufferings of some of the injured persons
are described to have been most excruciating,
until death put nn end to their pain. One man,
who is stated to have been nearly severed •in
twain. sustained existence three hours.
