Yong, July 10.—Another disgraceful
'riot occurred this afternoon in the 17th ward.
It wan of a very serious. character. A mob of
500 chiefly composed of Irish and Germans
attacked the Metropolitan p olive, with missies
and firearms. The police were driven back as
were also a squad sent to their relief. Another
detachment of 100 men were immediately sent to
the scene of conflict and a reqiusition was made
for a detachment of military. The riot was pre
meditated but was not to take place until night,
when it was intended to commence with an at
tack on the 17th ward station house.
SECOND DDIPATCII 4 -10 . 4 O'CLOCK.
The rioters have been fighting among them
selves the whole afternoon, occasionally attack
ing strangers who ventured among them. Sev
eral persons have been badly beaten on the
supposition that they were policemen disguised.
Four or five hundred policemen are 011 the ground
and the military are held in reserve in the arse
nal. It is said that a member of the Common
Council and many of the ex-polieeznen are ac
tive among the ritors. A quorum of the City
Council did not meet. to-night, in consequence of
wheih the police are still deprived of the use of
the station houses. and Mayor Wood was not to
be found. At the last accounts, matters were com
paratively quiet. The riot commenced on an
attempt of Coroner Perry to hold an inquest
over the body of a man who was killed yester
day, the mob opposing his action on account of
his being an American.
NEW loon, July 13.—An attack wee made
late on Saturday night upon the Metropolitan
Police force end the hospital buildings at
Seguin's point. About one hundred oystermen
and others, hostile to the selection of that local
ity fora temporary quarantine, participated in
the assault. The assailants fired over one hun
dred shots upon the policemen. and were finally
driven away by Capt. Walling bringing out his
cannon and howitzers. It is supposed that sev
eral of thetissailants were killed and wounded.
None of the police were injured, though num
bers narrowly escaped being fatally shot. The
greatest excitement prevails upon Staten Island.
The Sheriff and quarantine commissioners have
been notified of the occurrence, and are making
active preparations to resist a future attack, as
also to ferret out the perpetrators of the present
assault. Ono other fearful riot occurred in
Second avenue near Fourth street. last evening,
arising out of a difficulty of the Germano with
the Metropolitan police. Clubs, pistols, and
guns were freely used, and one man is known to
he killed, while a large number arc wounded.
