After the speech lame • the toasts, of .course,
a few of which we transcribe for the edifiCation
of our readers. These first were volunteer t Muds:
"The Fourth of July : A day epered to liberty,
talked of elsewhere, but enjoyed here alone.
flee. Bonham, successor of Brooks : Able to lash
with tongue and hand, may ha keep in mind the
achievement of his predeceisor, and 'when argument
hastened, wipe out every stain attempted to be thrown
upon the people or institutions of the South by the
magic aid of a cowhide.
Our next President May Fred. Douglas. the black
negro champion, be nominated by the North for our
next President. Abolitionists ought then to be satis
fled, and the South surely roused from her lethargy."
Then followed the regulars which as in an
army did more terrible execution than the skir
mishing volunteers:
By Dr. Joseph Minna.. :
"Northern men with Southern principles we meet
as friends; but the Abolitionists we salute with a
good coat of the inside of a pine and the outside of
a goose with a lighted lucifer match stuck to it."
By J. D. Jones :
"A Southern Confederacy The time has come
when the South must look to herself. May she break
loom all ties with Tanktxdom, and form herself a
Slareholding Confederacy."
Oh Jones! You ought to be ashamed! You
will frighten to death the generally unterrified
Democracy of the North, whose whole business
it is to preserve the Union. " But to go on :
By Barnet Livingston, Jr.: -
"llon. L. M. Bonham, Member of Co:ingress from
Edgetleld: May ho supply himself with a cane,
named alter his predecessor, of sufficient strength
and km to beat, whenever his country's rights de
mandit, all the Abolitionists from the Government
seat at Washington."

ashes) is at length complete: lie is to have a

COL. FORNEY ix D.Oviela.--Vie suggested the
other day, in view of the fact that the Pennsyl
vanian had exterminated what it called ••
gerism" in Philadelphia, that it should transfer
the sphere of its labors to Beaver county. and
let the Beaver Star go to Philadelphia and ex
terminate the democracy there as effectually a..
it has done in Beaver. But the advice was nn
necessary. The Pennsylvanian will save the
Star that trouble. It has undertaken that
pleasant task itself. The issue of that paper of
Saturday last contains the first of a - series of
articles against Col. Fouxxx.. in which the war
is opened upon him in grand style, with a prom
ise of indefinite continuance. We look on with
amazement and admiration. •
The occasion of this outbreak upon the gal
lant but defeates.l Colonel is the appearance in
l'hiladelphiaof a prospectus of n new democratic
paper to be published in that city by him, to be
.called the Press. The Pron.ngrannm regrets the
necessity of saying anything unkind of him. It
cites the fact that it has always been his friend
and defender; but that, it says, was when he de
served to be defended; and now that he has made
himself the aggressor (by starting a new paper?)
"covertly as well as openly seeking to attack
those who have always rejoiced in his good Land
in his bad ?] fortune," its duty is plain, and it
must speak. So hear it:
"We owe the discharge of this duty to the Demo
erotic Party—to Col. Forney we owe nothing. So
'eel as our columns could he used for his own pur
poses, sometimes under the guise of serving the par
ty,: it was well. But now that his political fortunes
aro past help, we aro coolly requested by him, through
his friends, to resign the control of our paper to him
or to dispossess ourselves by no absolute sale, ut a
price which he knowato be less than one-half of its
value, and which would involve our pecuniary ruin.
Our refusal to hiapropositiou, brought the throat that
a new organ would he commenced, and that a few
months would be sufficient to blot us out of existence.
Are wo to bo thus coerced and driven into au arrange
ment which has fur its object not the good of eta par
ty, bat which, it is hoped, will re-instate in the ranks
of the Democracy a defeated candidate for office and
allay the gnawing. of a disappointed and ruined am
bition?
What has Col. Forney done, that ho should ask
and wiped this? Does the party owe it to him to re
dress his imaginary wrongs and to repair the Injuries
whieh his own ambitious folly has inflicted? No; it
has other and higher aims. Desidee, what canoe has
ho for complaint? has be not been nurtured in the
lap of our party; Nas it not given him its honors and
emoluments; did it; not recently seek to place him in
a position neat to that of the President, and did not
this paper and the President himself (perhaps an.
wisely) aid in the effort? And yet we have It seems
earned* hostility which can only be satisfied by our
'annihilation.
Whilst Mr. Buchanan, among the special friends of
CoL Forney, is the subject of loud complainti and
bitter revilings, -does • the President deserve to be.
branded as an ingrate? Basle not asked Col. For
ney to take a• position in his government; the loot
in his gift among those for which Col. Forney is fitted
andwrorth as tendered to him, at least $15,000 per an.:
emn, besidesfrom his friends an outfit in rash of $lO,-
000? Does this look like ingratitude onthe part ofthe
President for services rendered? We speak thus In
justice to Mr. Buchanan. It is rendered necessary
by the clamor of Col. Forney's friends, who would
hare the country believe him an injured and neglect
ed man, and . by implication at least, lay the sin at
the door of the President. We have thus stated a
few thoughts which we propose to elaborate at. anstb.
er time, and-haring taken our stand, with a full
knowledge of the responsibility that attaches to it,
and with adetermination to maintain it at all hoards,
we will defend it with such =array of facts and fig
urea as will afford Col. Forney full scope for the ex
ercise of his arithmetic, and ample material for more
than one number of his forthcoming paper.
