Lintate in comezercial importance is rapidly
advancing. The exportation of palm oil had
risen, in the remembrance of President tenon,
from less than 1000 barrels per year, to more
than 1,000,000. Natives in the interior manu
facture millions of pounds of nattye cotton into
cloth, and it is thought that a few years suitable
encouragement would bring it to the coast for
mule. Large tracts of land on the St. Paul's
river have been planted with sugar cane, and a
steam sugar mill is now in operation, which cost.
about s4,ooo,andanotherlargeone worth $6,000
is on the way out, both the property of black
planters.
McGill Brothers (colored) of Monrovia, have
remitted nearly $16,000 to Baltimore for the
purpose of building a schooner of 109 tons for
the African coast trade, and purchasing herear
go. She was named the Moses Sheppard, and
recently safely arrived out, after a pleasant and
rapid run. By the annexation of the colony at
Cape Palmas to the Republic of . Liberia, the lat
ter has now a sea emit equal in length to that
from Portsmouth, N. IL, to Norfolk, Va., and
contains about 28,400' square miles—a ply suf
ficient to produce the necessaries of li e to the
whole colored population of the Unit States.
TUC ALLIOCD MARIAOB.3 ON THE PLA.. , s—The
Particulars.—The St. Joseph (Mo.) J unto! of
the 2d inst., contains the subjoined p titulars
of the story—a doubtful one, we hope ed trust
—of thetnassacre of a largeliody of ' troops
on the plains:
••Caps. Dixon came down on the Dotted States
steamer Mink, yesterday monde& and reported
the loss of many of our soldiers in a conflict
with a very large body of the Cheyennes and
Arrapahoos, two htuidred miles west of Fort
Kearney:
"The messenger who brought the news reach
ed St. Mary's on last Saturday. His name is
Vellaindeer, an old French trader, whole state
ments are perfectly reliable. He stated to Capt
Disci', Cot. Carpy and others, that eleven days
before, be had left Col. Sumner, who told him
that he had sent one hundred soldiers and fifty
teamsters a little in advance of his main body,
when they were attacked by a large body of
Cheyennes and Arrapshooe, and all were slain;
that be intended to proceed directly in pursuit
of-the enemy, and would not pause till he had
revenged the loss of his compatriots, and pun
ished the savage hordes who had butchered them."
BOTIALO AND P/TINDIIBOII RAILROAD.-OTNI
Cattarangus Freeman nays: That portion of this
road from Tunangwant Switch, on the New
York and Erie, to the Lafayette coal beds, is now
being pushed to completion; and it is thought
will be ready for the care the ensuing fall.
About five miles of the road, which will then be
completed, lies in this State, and the beeped,
something over twenty miles, in Pennsylvania—
taking for its route the valley of the Tunan.
gwant creek. An important item is the bridge
over the Allegheny, above the mouth of the
creek, upon which work, hands have been ac
tively engaged for Immo time. The completion
of thin portion of the road will be of vast ad
vantage to the heretofore seoluded section of
country through which it runs, as well as to
the oily of Buffalo and other places, obtaining
coal and lumber thereby. The full advantages
of this whole enterpriee will not be attained,
however, by either, until the entire direct route
from Buffalo to the coal beds is completed and
in running order.

CsxsnA.—Among the Mots °minuted with the
emigration from Europe this year is the large
number of English and Irish emigrants who land
in Canada, but pus on to the western States in
preference to settling in the provinees. Thus
we learn from the return made by tho emigration
agent at Hamilton, Canada West, that in the
month of June the number of emigrants cirri,-
log at that'port was 9414, of whom 1198 or lose
than s fourth part, remained in the country, the
rest leaving for the United States. And that a
large portion of these will eventually seek the
same destination, is evident from the returns for
the whole year, which show the following
result:
Total attired at Hamilton since Jan. lot, 21,982
Total left for United States, 19,932
Remaining in Canada, 2,650
A BRIGHT IDEA.--20t1Cle of the Southern Demo
cratic papers are advocating oral instruction, ex
clusively, in preference to written. It is believ
ed that if the masses of the people could be taught
their religion and politics entirely from the pul
pit and the stump, much less heresy and shoo-
Intel= would prevail in our churches and at
the polls. Stump speakers could dwell on the
horrors of Insurrection, the danger of Disunion,
the Hartford Convention, end the United States
Bank, which would be sufficient political instruc
tion for people in moderate circumstances, with
out the necessity of their reading the floods of
newspapers and speeches that Cover the land.—
This appears to be the latest remedy for the very
alarming increase of Itepublictudsm.-4161. Ere.

A WOXAD KILLED AT A KRE.—The Chicago
Journal, of July 7th. says, on Saturdayevening,
a fire occurred in the bakery of hleurs. Thomp

Messrs. Page & , Co. both in the same room. The
Are was caused by a lad's accidentally igniting
a large case of fire works, near the door. A few

rockets went acrpss the Street end through a

that about 25,000 bales of rags, averaging 275

year about 3,000 bales wore received by one
house from the land of Pharoah, Awing shipped
from the port of Alexandria for New York.—
These were the first rags brought from Egypt to
the united States, es previously' they had gone

and Gen. Cameron will be found in thic front

We have had fine growing weather during the
past week, and the accounts from some parts of
the cotton region aro more encouraging, whilst
from others we hear complaints of great back

weather will still bring out the plant, but wheth
er to such an extent as to make up for the cold
spring, the fall alone can decide. The accounts
of the sugar crop continue quite favorable.—
