S. RIDDLE & Co., EDITORand PROP,IIIETORS • TUESDAY MORNING, JULY 7, 1857 REARM RATTER 'ON EACH PAGE OP THIS PAPER. Two gentlemen of some prominence in this community (and one other of no prominence whatever) have stopped the Gassits on account of their dissatisfaction with the course we have pursued tOward the late Tax Convention. The burden of their complaint is that we did not publish Mr. Williams elaborate. report to that Convention upon the subject of railroad subscriptions. We did not publish that report for reasons sat isfactory to ourselves, to which we did not deem it necessary to refer at that time; but inasmuch as that fact has been made the basis of a little private persecution, we must be permitted to say, in self-justification, that the Report in question was never offered to us for publication. The Chromate, an afternoon paper, announced one day that it had received the manuscript and would publish it on the day following; but no one ever Caine near at to give us the opportunity of publishing it. Our rule and the rule of all the morning press has always been, with regard to matters of which a .general publication may be desired, never to publish them after they have been furnished orclusireig to any other paper, unless as advertisements. This rule we have persistently adhered to, and it is ono necessary to the maintenance of the equal rights or the press. If the writer of a document wishes it to appear iu all the morning papers, he must see that each of them has a copy or printed proofs at the same time and that the evening press does not obtainit in advance of them. If Le wishes it to appear ore/weedy in one paper, ho selects the one that suits him best. In this case the Report was given to the public, ostentatiously, in ad vance of the morning press, and the latter, in the exercise of a true self-respect, refrained from espying at second hand what had in the first in stance been withheld from them. We allude to these facts only for the purpose of putting ourselves right before the potfic. With regard to the two individuals in question, neither of them should throw stones at us upon this railroad question. They have bah been so mixed up with railroads and railroad subscrip tions that charity to themselves •ought to teach - them a little charity to us. They both owe very much of their position in public life to the un stinted aid which the Gazette has given them, for nearly twenty years past in ono instance and for more titan ten years in another; and that they should betray a proscriptive feeling, now, be . cause of a funded difference of opinion, after all the favors they hare individually received from this press, was hardly to be expected of them. But we do nut intend to retort upon them. Our only reiret is, that two such men should he capable of manifesting such a spirit. —The Ga.,,ze has frequently had to pass through such peculiar seasons as the present. There' will come times when we cannot all think alike, and when an independent paper like this must necessarily alienate $Oll3O of those tender minds which e.(1111or brook n difference of opinion. But the tuaititenAnce .ofa fearless and independent • position is of fir mere Value to us titan the patron agoof thin-skinned friends; and hence we go on in .the faithful discharge of our duties, thankful to those who stand by us, and charitable to these whose view:, and feelings lead them the other Way. From ,he very beginning of this contro versy the Gazette expressed, as it now expresses, s ' . its approval of a thorough and impartial! inves tigation into the railroad subscriptions made by this city and county. We have never thrown a straw in the way of such an investigation; and if those who engaged in the late scrutiny did not treat us fairly in giving publicity to the result' of their labors, the fault of its non-appearance in our columns is theirs, not ours. Our whilota friends, to whom we have referred above, do not pretend to go a whit further, in this matter, than we have professed our willingness to go; and we fancy that if, hereafter, we should be tempted to visit upon them, as occasion may serve,_ the proscriptiveness they have shcrim toward us, they will prefer to be spared from such an imi Lotion of their own example. JA:cus - Factn.—Several days since sro made some extracts from the late speech of Douglas at Springfield, 111., and accompanied them with such strictures as tea deemed proper. As we stated at that time we found the speech in the Missouri Republi,n it having been either report ed for, or sent to that paper. Among others this extract occurred "All history had proved that in no part of the world, or of the world's history, had the negro ever :shown himself capable of self-government, and it was not the intention of Lire founder of this Govern. meatto violato that great lute of God which mado the distinction between the white and the black man. That distinction is plain and palpable, and it has been tho rule of civilization and Christianity the world over, that whenever any one man, or set of men, were incapable of taking care of themselves. they.shonld conseht to be governed by those who were capable of managing their affairs for them." We find another report of his speech prepared for the latitude of Springfield in the Illinois Register in which the above sentences endorsing as they do in the fullest manner the tyrant's plea that "might makes right" are so softened down as to read in the following manner .The history of the times clearly show, that the negroes worst regarded as on inferior rare, who, i all ages, and in every part of the globe, and under n the most favorable circumstances, had shown them selves incapable of self-government, and consequent ly under the protection of those who were capable of providing for and protecting th• 0111 the exercise of all the rights which they. were capable of enjoying, consistent with the good end safety of society." . The first version is the rankest of all tyranny ; it lays the foundation for all the claims to the Divinoright of a .ruler which Alexander of Rus sia would ever ask. There is nu restriction to any particular color; nor is the right to be bounded in any degree by what a man's own opinion of his: ability to_ take care of himself may be; it is the bold assumption of Toryism the world over, and George the 111 asserted the doctrine long and long before S. A. Douglas had a being on this mundane sphere. , He, the said Douglas, ought to be ashamed to scour up and palm off for somethin g new any such thread bsro talk and then after nll to modify it to sui. the latitude of Illinois Tho Cincinnati Gazette given an account of a sharp operation of a feminine swindler, in that city, who, copying after many lords of this cre ation!-loft the millinery and trimming business and her creditors, to whom she owes about $ 8 , 00 9 at home and a comfortable Sum in the East. She left between the 3d and 4th of July. The Gazette sap. endeavors to find her have been made without success, thus far, and we learn that one of the "victimized" offers five hundred dollars for her discovery. Whether the fair milliner became infected with the present defaulting disposition of her masculine brothers or not, wo cannot Bay, but wo propose her as the next candidate for a lu crative office." Tuiaccident on the Marietta railway caused the death of two young men of Indianapolis named Bullard, nephews of Rev. Dr. Bullard, who.was killed at the Gabconade bridge, Mo.— The' were grand children of Dr. Cotton, of Marietta. Mr. Brigham, whose wife was killed, was from Marietta. On Thursday sin were dead, and one or two others were in a dangerous con dition. The editor of the Cincinnati Gazette says that to any ono who has been on the spot of the accident, it is only surprising that every person in the car was not instantly killed. The perpendicular height of the bridge there, isfifty• seven feet, and the gulf below quite rough. • QUEER Treoanartucta, Ennons.2—An adver tisement in a New York paper announces the ap. pearance of one of the aeries of Waverley novels 40 "Old Morality," with an itlestretion of "Old Morality at hie Work" Ono of the published canons of the late General Convention of the Episcopal Church read as follows: "Bishops may be tried for crime and .immortality." aEItIIAN PAINCEBSES:—Ttie Brunswick Jour nal announces that not lees than 'fifty German Princesses are of an ago, to be married; and hence, of course, eagerly lookingout inthematii manful market. DIABOLICAL ATTEninT To DESTROY A Cornell • I —An attempt has been recently anode to blow op the church of the Hey. 0. 13. Frothington, in Jersey City. This church, which was lately built, is beautiful in its construction and an nr chiteetnral ornament to the city. It is a Unita- t rian church. On Friday nieht last some desperate char acters broke into the church, probably by means of false keys, and disfigured it in several places, particularly the organ, of which they destroyed three keys. They then lighted a fire and turned on all the gas, evidently with the intention of creating an explosion and destroying the church. By some fortunate accident, which is not under stood. the revolting scheme failed of succes,._ The matter was not discovered moll Saturday. when the sexton went into the building as usual upon that day of the week to prepare it for the services oftlie suet...ding day. It is thought that this violent 'lesions? rat ion was in obedience to•some of the prejudices entertained against the church and its, pastor.—N. Y.
