Darning of the Montreal.
From the Montreal Itrrald ofJunii 2n.
On Friday night the Montreal left Quebec at
4 o'clock, with about thirty eabinpassengers on
board, nail some four hundred and fifty or five
hundred emigrants. Among the former was
Andrew Haves, lisq., of St. Joseph street. Mr.
Hayes has furnisher[ us with the following in
formation :
When the steamer reached about twelve miles
from Quebec, above Mr. Atkinson's place at
Carouge 13ay, Mr. llayei , came outside thestiloon
at the niter part of the steamer, when he obser
ved a smoke rising up from the ruidshipa of the
boat over the saloon. in a very short time a
number of persons were rushing with jugs of
water to ettinguish the fire. There was one boat
on hoard the steamboat on the hurricane deck,
and a hand belonging to die steamer went op to
try to get her into the water. Mr. liven did
the same thing, and between them they got the
boat over the side, and let go the tackles. Ile
then got into her, end in a •minute or two mum
hers of persons crowded in and the boat sunk
Mr. Hayes thenheld on to the boat's tackle. and
maintaincirliituself in that position for a long
time, till the heat from the burning ship became
Leo great. In the mean tiara crowds of persons
were ronstanly jumping into the water and
elimbing down the guards to get a, near the
water no possible. At this time, the boat's head
was turned toward the north shore, and she ran
until she approached the shore in about one
hundred and fifty yards from it, where she ap
pear. to have nook in deep water, or to Lave
stench a rock, as borne persons believe. At any
rate, the water was so deep that there was no
possibility of reaching the shore, otherwise than
by swimming or in hoots. The flumes, after the
smoke was at first perceived, did not take more
than ten minutes to envelope the whole vessel,
and in two hours the was utterly destroyed, so
that hardly a vestige of the vessel could be seen.
The Napoleon had started at the same time with
the Montreal, and %resat the time of the accident
at a distance of about half a mile from the Mon
-
treat, and above that vessel. Probably from
fear of taking fire, the captain of the Napoleon
did not judge it prudent to approach theburning
vessel. A largo boat, or batteau, was in tow of
this vessel, and, after some contention, as it is
reported, with the proprietor, she went off to
attempt to save the passengers from the burning
Teasel. She also had two other boats of her
own, which were dispatched to the scene of the
disaster. There. were also some boats which
Came from the shore, but none of them could
approach very close to the steamer, so that
every one who was saved was obliged to make
Ammo attempt to swim for their lives. :Mr.
Hayes himself, after remaining, as he believes,
nearly half an hour hanging on to the vessels'
aide, found it too hot to remain there any longer,
'and struck out boldly for a boat which was ap
proaching._lle swam to this boat; but as the
men on boadsaw a much larger number of per
sons in jeopardy of their lives hanging round the
wreck, they negleoted Mr. Ilayeahs calls to bo
taken in, and—it watt not till he succeeded in
clutching the boat and - raising himself up by
his own muscular force that he felt himself side.
The boats with the persona who were Raved all
went on board the Napoleon, in which was re
ceived 125 passengers and 16 dead bodies. Of
the passengers saved a great number were sadly
burned, and many of them greatlyruiseds—
Once on, board, they were treated b the Cap
tain with every attention.
Besides those .who were taken oniNa l, (-cl the
Napoleon, a few persons, Mr. Hayes thl not
more than twenty, succeeded in swimming on
shore or to some rocks in the immediate neigh
borhood of the beach.

.RM. Li• lS
While in the water, either hanging ou to the
steamboat or to the small boat by which he was
eventually saved, he was repeatedly grappled
by unfortunate persons in the act or drowning,
and at the moment when he laid bold of the
boats gunnel, he believes that six persons, chief
ly women, bad hold of his skirts. These the
boatmen took in before they extended any aid
and comfort to him, and dpring this final strug
gle for life hie sufferings of mind and body were
• excessive. These were increased by the dread
ful cries and shrieks of droining persons going
on in every direction around htm. These he
described as being airful in the extreme. Men,
women and children were suffering the tortures
of fire and drowning. On one band a poor
creature would be seen perched on an outside
part of the steamer, where a resting place could
be obtained only by the closest hold wills both
bands and feet, and there hanging in torture
till driven by the smoke and Ileums he or she
had to take the fatal plunge into the cold river
below. In another direction stalwart men might
be seen seeking to accurst themselves about the
irons of the - guards, or the paddles. Some of
them lost their hold and sunk itiLtnce. Others
managed to hangon for a space, but at last they
had to give up from sheer fatigue, or by the
pressure of other sufferers seeking to secure the
same refuge. Here families were preparing and
determining to die together; there the husband
or the wife saw his or her partner forever separ
med. Women with children in their arms leap- '
ed into the water; others held on to the burning
wreck until losing their foothold they fell, and
were lost forever.
The Montreal on which this sad accident ec
curred,. is not the celebrated steamer so long
under the command of Capt. Armstrong, and
during that gentleman's time so great a favorite
with the travelling public. The unlucky vessel
Just destroyed, was a vessel about two years old,
owned and built by Wm Wilson of Quebec. Her
engines were the old Ines belonging to the gyd
enhatn. :Now that the disaster has occurred,
there are plenty of persons to say that they had
long foreseen it. It is said that she has been
repeatedly on fire during the season. It was
generally supposed that she belonged to the
Messrs. Torrance of this city; but that is a mis
take arising from a confounding of her with the
old Montreol.
It seems frcins rumors which were afloat on
board the "Napoleon,' thatthe "Montreal!' had 1
been on fire previously while getting up her
steamoind that precautions had been taken with
a view to any such casuality as that which
finally occurred; but this is at present uncer
tain. , 'After the fire had been burning for A
certain lenght of time there was a kind of ex
plosion, which destroyed nearly all the upper
part of the Teasel, that remained after the c.. • .
catas
trophe, - .
It appears that there was no boat On• board
the Montreal which could be.pat to the-ugliest
we in saving the passengers. Captain Rudolph

1. Gee AT excitement is prevailing at Bloom
ongton, Indiana, in connection with the trial of
three men, two by the name of Moon en, and
one by the name of COOS, who are charged with
being accomplices in the murder of Mr. Brice
RAU. The friends of the accused have banded
themselves together under the name of "Regu
lators," and the Brookfield (la.) Democrat says
they have been in town during the week to the
number of three hundred, besides quite a unlim
ber of the residents who sympathize with them.
They do not deny the complicity of the three
men, but insist that they shall be admitted to
baiL On the other hand those who are opposed
to admitting bail, have-formed themselves into
a counter organization under the cognomen of
"Moderators." They are only about two hun
dred in number, but its we are informed, have
the sympathy of much the larger portion of the
community. Great excitement prevails, busi
ness in Bloomington is entirely suspended, and
as both parties are fully armed, it is feared a
collision will be inevitable. Unless this can be
avoided; the most serious results aro to be
feared.
The Vincennes Gazette says:
The Regulators who cruelly murdered Bing
ham, in Monroe county, it appears have main
tained a rule of terror in that county for a long
time, committing the moat terrible outrages
with impunity, orcry one who became obnoxious
to these villians, was treated with the most bar
barouicruelty. Only four out of the fifty who
whipped Bingham to death—because he had the
courage to serve a warrant as constable on ono
of their members—have been indentified and
arrested: In their examination, at Blooming
ton, the evidence disclosed numerous instances
of similar outrages by the same gang, upon
other highly respectable citizens, who barely
escaped with their lives. Upwards of thirty
persona have been cruelly scourged, some eight
or nine of them females: Several houses bad
been burned.

VOLUME LXX
I and Mr. Wilson. jr., son of the owner of the
Montreal, are said to have saved, themselves by
swimming on shore.
The emigrant passengers were almost all
Scotch, who had arrived out in the James Mc-
Kenzie.
In the afternoon we took a turn through the
Emigrant Sheds at Grey Nuns street. There were
1 there at the time, prog, hly, some thirty or thir
! ty-five poor people, chiefly women and a few
children, who had formed pert of the living
freight of this unlucky vessel. There were one
or two groups of truly distressing appearance
..-
and all bore the stamp of persons who had gene
through come great calamity, which had had on
theif nerves an elect, from which' they had not
yet recovered. The most conspicaous figures in
the shed wer6 poor old Colin !Sinclair and
his wife, who might well Labe formed a
model for astatuary representation of John
Anderson and his guile wife, only that
they were even more weather-beaten in the
journey of life than ire usually see that ancient
pair exhibited. They appeared to be past eighty
years of age, and perhaps, from having already
passed through many vicissitudes, were not in
appearance at least, so much affected by the last
as some of their comrades. They had lost a son.
described to us as a very fine young man, who
had come out with them, and who was, probably,
their only stay in this world. The old gentle
man was dressed in a rough kind of plat of
brown and white or drab color, and his garments
were of the-very simplest cut, which was also
true of the old lady, his companion. Sitting on
a box in the middle of the room, we saw a young
lad of some sixteen or seventeen years, who had
lost his sister in this dreadful disaster. He
seemed quite broken down by the blow which
had failed, on him. Near him on a bench wan
a woman with a child in her arms. She had lost
two others, and was quite alone with the remain
ing one; her husband being in Toronto.
The following is a list, as complete as we-can
make, of the passengers of the Montreal, with the
names of those saved and those supposed to be
drowned. There is a hope that some of them in
the latter category may yet be found to have
been preserved, though Capt. Cote, with whom
we have conversed, is apprehensive that only
about 12 or 15 persons have-been left behind at
Cap Rouge, who choseto search for their missing
relatives:
