for a display, of fire works in the evening, at the
Arsenal. We hare beard some talk of a simlLar dis
play at the river, opposite the city. This has been
a standiardetormination for some years past, and

that from-two to fire sky rockets here mounted Into

moat the Interest on the domestic bonds of the city,
which falls duo in New York and Philadelphia, on
the let of July, amounting to about $20,000, to make a
tempo r ary loan of 49,000 of this amount. They
therefore respectfully ask for the adoption of the fol
lowing resolution:

report in favor of building a sewer on tho wharf, and
asked tho passage of a resolution appropriating

To the Select and Common Councils—Gentlemen:
The special committee to which wan referred the me
morial of Mr. Lowrie relative to a balance of $775
remaining unpaid upon the steam fire engine, bag
home to report that they find that this amount still
remains unpaid of the $.5000 agreed to be paid 'for
the engine; that 5500 of this amount arises out of
the nonpayment and errors in the original enbeerip.
Lions of $3500, and $7.75 out of errors in the list of
$l5OO procured by the committee of Councils. The
engine is in the 0084t5SiOn of the City, end your com
mittee believe it just that Mr. Lowrie should be paid.
They therefore ask the possum, of the following reso
lution :
Resolved, That the Mayor hotted ho is hereby au
thorised to draw his warrant in favor of J. L. Lon - ry
for rin, and charge the name to the contingent fond:
Provided, the maid Lowry receipt to the city for the
above sum in full of all demand. against the city to
this data, whether for the engine, for services LIA en

The Prevident read an ordinance trupplementary to
an ordinance passed the 251 h day of April, 1856, en
titled "An Ordinance to regulate the ante of Coal,
Hay, kc., by weight," authorizing Aldermen to col
lect fines for breach of said ordinance.
Mr. Bennett moved to amend by adding a section
repealing the supplementexempting the Water Works
from baring their coal weighed, Mr. lirCollister mo
red an amendment to the amendment repealing
the pronto to the eth section of the original ordin
ance, exempting manufacturers from weighing coal.
On motion of Mr. Kim the amendments wore laid
on the table.
There being übjemion too third reading of the or
dinance it was laid orer under the Rules.
Mr. Ross offerred the following resolution:
Revolred, That the Water Committee he and Is
hereby authorised to tarnish the Water Works with a
scale for the purpose of weighing coal and that the
same he used for weighing coal when they think it

The Jury this morning brought in a verdict of guil
ty in the sham mute, with a recommendation to the
Mercy of tho Court. The Court thOn sentenced the
thifstudants to pay a Ono of Sp Atari,, and undergo an
imprisonment in the county jell, for and during tho
period of one calendar month.
Com. vs. Hannah Snare; indietedfor birceoy. The
defendant entered a plea of guilty of potty larceny,
and was menteneml to pay a fine of 01 cents, and un
dergo one month's imprisonment In the county jail.
Com. vs. John O'Neil; lodieted for assault and bet
ter Pion oath of Edward Hammel!. The prosecutor
le engaged on a boat, of which defendant is first mote
some little dispute arose between the parties, when
the alleged assault is said to hare been committed.
Verdict guilty.
TS. Court sentenced O'Neil to pay a fine of $2O
and the costs of prosecution.

Elias Brown wee recently convicted for keeping the

and in connection with Elba Brown kept the house
in which ho was murdered.
Commonwealth vs. Valentine tleohring, indicted
for obtaining money under false pretences, en oath
of John Thompson: Ueohring .14 Thompson a
horse, warranting it to be gonnd in wind and limb,
and a good draught horse, for which be received the
enormous sum of twenty-eight dollars. The bored
did not prove to bo es good a draught horse as he
Was warranted, hence tho present prosecution. Ver.

prosecution.
Commonwealth vs. Moses Brien, indicted for ler
ceny, on oath of Geo. Shaeffer. ,The prosecutor re
side. on Quarry st., Pittsburgh, and-is a shoemaker
by trade. On the sth of the present month, two
tiogroo* and a white man came into hilt shoji. One
of the negro..s is the present defendant. A (=tomer
mane in, and they . commenced quarnding among
themselves.' When Shanffsi rotund from waiting an
the emstamer, the darkies and white man' loft the
shop, but he did not calm his watch for some time
efterwind. Ile suepected the para., and hod war
rants for their arrest issued, but only succeeded in
arresting the defendant. The Commonwealth offered
Brien's affidavit in evidence, which acknowledges
that he was ono of the party, but vehemently assert,

ENGLAND.---A spirited discussion in the 1101190
of Commons occurred in relation to the destruc
tion of Grey-town by vessels of the U. S. Navy.
Lord Hamilton inquired if the Government had
demanded of the American Government repara
tion for the property of British residents de
stroyed in the bombardment. Lord Palmerston
replied that such a demand had not been made,
the la* officers of tli,Croin having given the
opinion that the demand could not be sustained
A discussion then ensued, in which Messrs. Dis
raeli, Roebuck and others denounced the bom
bardment es an outrage, and insisted that the
honor of the British flag had been assailed, and
that vigorous measures should .have been insti
tuted to avenge the insult. Lord John Russell
and others defended the course taken by the
Government, and after SOMC further col:mull:Won
the subject one dropped.
The British cruisers on the coast of Cuba have
increased.

Liverpool Provision Market.—The market has
been generally quiet and dull.-
Nrw Yunk, June 2.9.—Four serious riots occur
red in this vicinity on Sunday. At Hudson
Park yesterday, a party of Oertuans, who were
enjoying a pic-nic, were attacked by rowdies,
when n battle ensued in which several of the
former were seriously injured.
The Eleventh Ward was the scene of a dan
gerous riot. A gang of rowdies attacked Capt.
MeEinney, of the Thirteenth Ward Police, and
nine of Lie men, and succeeded after a bloody
fight, in rescuing a prisoner ft-ern the custody of
the policemen.
Captain M'Kinney was. it is believed, fatally
injured in the melee, and seven of his men dan
gerously wounded.
The riot grew out of the arrest by the police,
of a fellow who was acting o ringleader to o
gang of ruffians who were assaulting the mem
bers of a hose company. They succeeded in
rescuing their comrade, and heating the police=
men .at Williamsburg. The Gentians and Irish
ale° engaged in a tight, in which three persona
were stabbed.
The firemen of that usually peaceful sulnwh
also indulged in a free fight on Saturday night.

from the point, when'fhe Sheriff countermanded
the order for their prop roil, as the whole affair
was one grand hoax., put upon the Sheriff by one
