Itissanew., Fifth-Bt-. near Grant, on Wednesday, July 8, at 11 o'clock, The topic whi h we have Chosen this morning for editorial discussion is rather frigid in its as. soeiations, and in that respect, at least, should prove acceptable to the reader, when the mercu ry in his often-Inspected Fahrenheit is np "in the nineties." The poet recommended "thinking of the frosty Caucuses" to his stay-at-home sem ciates, echo were at the time eweltering in the fervid heat of a London summer, as a cooling draught-id their throbbing temples and steam leg pores; and we are assured on respectable authority that the "Northern Hordes" on the hot and dusty plains of Pelestinc, momentarily relieved their sufferings from the intensity of the heat etas "noon day sun" by going back in imagination to the crystal glaciers and frozen fountains of their'Northern mountain, homes. But it is neither with over-heated poets nor with . hct-hlooded soldiers that we hare to do . this miming, and we therefore without further ceremony or preface proceed to "open up" our subject which is nothing more than the proposed expedition in search of Sir John Franklin. It is known to our readers that Sir John _ Franklin, who" has become famous the world over not only on account of his extraordinary censer and melancholy fate as an explorer of the Arctic seas, but also on account of the deeo ilea to his inemory ' af his worthy wife, has been -for the last two years regarded as dead by the British government, end his name has been ac cordingly stricken from the roll of living officers In the Admiralty department, and a pension be stowed on his widow and children. Some twelve or thirteen years hare elapsed since he was last definitely heard from, and every reasonable con= jecture and hypothesis force us, however unwill ingly,_to the conclusion that he and his brave companions and followers have perished in the cold and 4tiospitable regions within the icy cir cle of the North Pole. Tho British goviirnment haring iirrired it this very:reasonable conclusion after several vain attempts to rescue the brave and unfortunate explorer from their unhappy fate, now peremptorily refuses to fit out or codn tanance the fitting out ofany additional expedition haringthet repose in view. Lady Franklin, with the pleauwerance and devotion of a true and exemplarY wife, still clings to the fond hope that kir husband has withstood the rigors and inifering of a succession of Arctic winters, and believes that he could yet, if another effort was Made, be rescued from the peeps which surround him. and be again restored_ to his.conntry and Zee petitions longer heeded by theAdmireityshep . an expedition at her Own expetutey d one more ef fort to seoomplielt w hat has now, it would seem becomallio great object of her earthly existence s We Hat:dr:the British Helen:meet has taken a oorreetimition in this matter. Commendable as Lady Franklin's motives are, in her efforts in behalf of her distinguished husband, there are gOod_reasons why cien she shoobl. not be en couraged:in her hopeless tiffortis longer, if indeed, she should not be restrained. CA LL ENDA.It has for sale a book in paper binding of some 80 pages entitled a History of Kansas and Railroad and Steamboat Sketches. It professes to give a plain unvarnished account of the soil, climate, rivers, roads, ferries, bridges, Indians and their reservations, counties, towns and town-making, labor, laws, lands , schools and colleges,-mounds, timber, minerals, agriculture, manufactures,. cattle, grasses, etc., etc., of tho much discussed land of Kansas. Its object is to impart reliable information to emi grants of the best routes to take in going, and the best places when there to make locations, and though the book is quite weak in style and, in speaking of the "laws," we discover some mistakes, to call them by no harder name, doubt leas there are valuable facts disclosed which it will be of great advantage to those for whom this book is written to know. What he says about the mixed rate of South America, and the deterioration of tho blood in hybrids and mongrola, are simple extracts from the Day Book." The New York Day Book is known where ever it is known at all, as one of the most ra_ -bid, fire-eating, super-servicable pro-slavery sheets that there be in this country. It went in to spasms of delight over the Deed Scott deems-- ion; it -was the paper that put forth Ito learned -diatribes last fall upon the text that slavery should not confine its benevolent ministrations and influence toiSien of tawny or sable skins and wooly heads.Aut that into its proteetingfold should he gathered all the poor miserable white trash of the free as well as the slave states. The Richmond Enquirer struck the key note of this melody and the Day Bwk took its pitch from the Virginia Sampson and played away upon it for six mortal months. We now find that its delightful maunderings were to the ears of the Democratic Belial who .ha. "no nensense about him," soft music; and into his sweeter mediations the Day Book and the recol lections of munificent doped ions to thecboreh that promises not to preach " abolition, - come like soft aim from Paradise. Wilms LLAD.—It may be of iutereet to our manufacturers of white lead to know that a German in New York professes to have dis covered s new process of manufacture, where by a great amiss of time and money is made. The New York Tribune thus speaks of it: " In the mimufactatre of white lead be the old pro co., the sheet lead placed in ea:there pots with acid in a moderate bent, requires some fire or +ix months to become sufficiently oxydired ; and in this process . • qtar are wasted, u well MA in terest money Invested in lead lost. In the new proems, the fumes arising from the manufacture of vinegar are substituted fur the liquid, and 'answer the purpose so much better that, as it is alleged, sheet lead of the same thickness with that used in tin pots is corroded in eight or ten days, so as to yield a much larger per cent of whits lead— say 20 or 25 per ant—than is obtained in the old way in fire or nix mouths, At the name time, the conversion of 30 gallons of whisky into 3.10 gallons of vinegar, inch as sells In this market at eight cents • gallon, wfil, it is estimated, pay all the expense of converting the sheet lead into white lead of the very &it quality. The proCess of manufacture is extremely ehnple. The filtration of the whisky and venter going on at a imitable heat in a lower room, gives off Its fumes from the filters directly into an air-tight room above, where the sheets of load are arranged upon racks, and where the process of oxidation can be seen through glasses in the partition!'
