Murdered English
(inc of the worst abused things wo know is
our mother tongue, the good old English lan
guage. In the mouths of the common people it
gets terribly chewed up, and even oureducated
men are guilty of clipping its fair proportions,
mutilating and mangling it most shockingly.—
Very few persons speak the language with entire
correctness. One who should do so., would be
. _
apt to be laughed at as a purist. But there is
certainly room for improvement in our ordinary
talk, as the numerous honks recently issued,
pointing out the errors of speech and teaching
the people ••bow to talk," abundantly prove.
Even in the best writtcq compositions there is
•ften a carelessness in the use of language quite
surprising to one who notices it for the first
time. A work has recently been published in
London entitled—•'Modern English Literature:
its Blemishes and Defects; by Henry 11. Breen;"
in which a surprising list of errors is pointed
out in the works of such men as Gibbon, Hume,
Dr. Johnston. Iloseoc, Irallam, Blair, Macaulay,
and others. Judging from a notice of this work
in the New York Pool, it is the most elaborate,
thorough and exact philological criticism hith
erto published. The author remarks that there
is nothing that demonstrates the prevalence of
ungrammatical diction so much as the occur
rence of it in our critics, grammarians and com
pilers of dictionaries: as when we meet with a
writer professedly descanting upon rules of
grammar, and violating those rules in the very
comment he rookie on them! Dr. Blair is a
frequent offender in this respect, Mr. Breen
showing, that iu his very definition of precision
there is a glaring want of perspicuity, precision,
grammar and truth' •

But perhaps the best joke of all lies in the
fact that Mr. Breen is himself convicted of nu
merous blunders by the Post.
Thus be speaks of the "isv greatest poets" and
the "two greatest historians," and he as, no noun
is ever an epithet. He says:
"These facts will account for the inaccuracy
of our judgments on contemporary writers as
compared with those of a more remote age.
A sentence that involves the absurdity of
making the present age positively ?remote," in
order that a past age nay be comparatively
"more" remote.
Truly, entire accuracy in the use of language
is a very uncommon thing. Wetrust Mr. Breen's
hook will be republished here, and that our
writers will study it.
A HARD Cin.—ln 1850, Win. L. Chaplin, of
New York, was arrested in the District of Co
lumbia, on the charge of aiding in the escape
of two slaves. At the earnest solicitation of
his friends. S. Parker, Win. Blanchard, and
David A. Hall, citizens of This place, two of
them, at least, not:identified with the Anti-Slav
ery cause, generously became his sureties to the
amount of $6,000. A sum of money covering a
portion of this, was put in their hands as a
guaranty, but, Chaplin having alsobeen arrested
on a similartharge in Maryland, and bail de
manded to the ?mount of $lO,OOO, at the urgent
solieitation.ofAis friends, they surrendered this
money, so that the necessary bail might be se
' cured in Maryland. on the express assurance
that it should be refunded them.
Chaplin failed to appear, his recognizance
Was forfeited, that money woo never repaid, and
the gentlemen above named were held responsi
ble. By the exertions of disinterested parties
at the North, they were enabled to pay $2,600 . ,
leaving $2,600. The Marshal was forbearing,
but the time has come when delay can be accord
ed no longer. One of tiM number, 311 0 . Parker,
a man of limited means, has been. sold out at a
ruinous sacrifice, to satisfy but a part of the
law's demands, and the same process hangs
over the others, their property about to be ad
vertised. •
In their extremity they have Sent out a circu
lar to the liberal men of the country, and we do
hope that it may generously be responded to.—
They. ought to be saved from harm. Twenty
five hundred dollars is nvery heavy burden for
them, but, distributed among some thousands of
Anti-Slavery men, is no burclen'at Al.—Na

THE NEW EXPEDITION IN SEARCH Or SIB JOHN
FEASKLIN.—The following letter from Captain
M'Clintock has been received by Mr. S. R.
Graves, the Chairman of the Liverpool Shipown

UNITED SERVICE CLUB, Pall Mall, May 13.
DEAR SIE—I take the liberty of addressing
you the more freely, perhaps, because by your
letter you seem to feel considerable interest in •I
the object of my voyage. I regret much' that I I
C
cannot visit Liverpool now, as all the work is
thrown upon my hands. In this note I simply
purpose to offer you my best thanks foryour cor
dial offer of assistance, and also to afford you a r,
few details of my plan, and the means placed at ;
my disposal for carrying it out.
As you may not have a convenient pocket
map at hand for reference, I send you Lady I
Franklin's pamphlet, which contains one. Upon
it you will see marked qut the area to be search
ed. All the other lands laid down have been I
"'
searched. .
I intend to sail about the end of June, from
Abe-demi, and proceed to Barrow Strait—ascer
tain that the provisions, stores, and boats left
at Port Leopold and Beerhing Island by the re
cem searching expeditious, are in good order,
in the event of my having to fall back upon them
--examine the state of the ice in Peel Strait, and,
if practicable, proceed down it into the unknown
area.
Should I not succeed here, I intend to return
to Port Leopold, and proceed down Prince
Regent's Inlet to Ballot Strait, and there make
another attempt to pass into and through the
field of search to Victoria Land, where I shall
Winter, an¢ in the ensuing Spring, before the
thaw sets in, complete the entire exploration,
and search by means .of sledges drawn by men
and by dogs.
In endeavoring to reach Victoria Land, it. is my
intention to avoid, if possible, any risk of beCom
ing involved in the ice; and, should I not suc
ceed in reaching Victoria Land, I will return to
Bellot Strait to piss the Winter, no we know by
experience that the retreat of the ship from
there amounts almost to certainty. From Vic
toria Land the homeward voyage Is equally cer
tain, but by way of Behring Straits.
The means of accomplishing Lady FRANKLIN'S
object, the completion of the search, and now
placed at my disposal, are ample. The vessel
is a three-masted screw schooner yacht, with
fore topsail and topgallant sail ; the topsail reefs
front the dock; she is decidedly a clipp,---di
agonally built, 132 feet long over all, 320 tons
builder's measurement, with a light draught of
water; trunk engines, of 30-horse power; crew
numbering 30 individuals, including an Esqui
maul interpreter.
Almost all will be old shipmates of my own in
former Arctic voyages; they shall be fed and
clothed as in the Government expeditions, and
receive double pay. I, therefore, anticipate no
ditfliculty in keeping up precisely the same dis
cipline as that which we found to answer so well,
in the three Arctic expeditions in which I have
served. The vessel is now in the hands of
Messrs. Hall, Aberdeen, for the purpose of
being fortified, by means of doubling, extra
hold-beams, "stringers, &c., to enable her to with
stand ice-pressure; and upwards of 100 men are
at work upon her. All Arctic men agree in pro
nouneing.ber to be the beet adapted vessel ever
selected for Arctic service. From her sharp
midship section she will rise to ice pressure
which would crush in the sides of a wall-sided
vessel. Err speed, under steam, when deep, is
expected to be six knots.
She will carry five weeks' feel for full speed,
and two and a half years' provisions—being
enough to last us for a second Winter, should
we unavoidably be detained. I believe I have
nothing more to add, except to say that the vol
unteer offers of service from officers, seamen,
and landsmen, are very numerous: and as I have
already secured the very beet of materiel, so I
hope, also, to be fortunate with the personnel of
the expedition.
Thus, having all the means, I gladly accept
the responsibility; and no efforts upon my part
shall be wanting to secure the accomplishment
of an object so earnestly desired by the great
and good of all nations.

SUPPLEMENT TO THE SCHOOL Low.—The fol
owing supplement to the School Law was passed
a few days before the close of the late session of
the Legislature. It will prose of interest to a
number of our readers. The second section,
/which raises the minimum amount of tax paya
ble for school purposes—heretofore fifty cents—
to one dollar. was struck out by the Howe. It
was re-inserted by the Senate, and when the bill
was returned to the House, it was concurred in
as it now stands:

of Representatives of Pennsylvania, in General
Assembly met, and it is hereby cdacted by the

tion to the duties - now imposed upon them by
law, to settle annually the accounts of the School
Treasurers of the different sclibel districts of
this Commonwealth, and that either party may
take an appeal, as is now provided for in other
cases of settlement of accounts by township Au
ditors. Provided, That this Act shall not apply
to the city end county of Philadelphia.
SEC. 2. That hereafter the tax imposed by
section n of the Act approved May 9th, 1854,
for the regulation and continuance of a system
of education by the Common Schools, on trades,
professions, awl occupations, or ou single free
men, shall in no case be less than nay ',ovum.

HO HO !--The Wellsburgit Herald of this
morning, informs ns that the City Council of
Wheeling has delegated three of their number
a committee to visit the site of the proposed
railroad bridge at Steubenville, make observa
tions, report progress and see what is best to be
done. The contractor for the building of the
bridge is a very peaceably disposed man, and
we presume will net object to their satisfying

Edward Wade sold a piece of land to his broth
er Shadrach, upon which he hail sowed wheat
last fall ; and, the crops having been winter
killed, Edward claimed the right to sow it
again, and take off a crop of spring wheat. This
Shadrach resisted, and while Edward was sow
ing the seed be deliberately shot him dead, and
fled as Cain did. There is a good deal of old
Adam and original sin in the world.

A new counterfeit of the five dollar note of

ing bank notes. The bank is not now issuing
any note+ of the piste counterfeited except those

A terrible accident happened in the excava
tion of the railroad tunnel at liaunstein. in
Switzerland, one day the last of May. The tun
nel suddenly fell in, and almost the whole of the
laborers who were at that moment at work were
.either crushed to death or stifled. About flay
are believed to haveperished.
Too Troy Meth°dist Claference, at the recent
meeting in Pittsfield, passed a series of very
strong resolutions against Slavery. The Con
ference repudiates the abominable doctrine
_that involuntary servitude is in harmony with
pure Christianity.
Tim cattle murrain in the northern part of
Europe, is subsiding. The results of scientific
investigat ions regarding the origin and symptoms
of the disease seem to have removed the appre
hensions of its possible introduction into Eng
land.
