Cormtponc or the pateiborgh 1:02t=1 The drenching rain of yesterday gave way..to n gloripus June sou and a bright, sky, as if to accommodate thepart icipatorsin the great rail way celebration of to-day. This busy city put on her gala dross during last night, and the morn ing saw every street and thoroughfare through which the procession lens to pass, decked with streamers, flogs anti garlands, and waving a welcome to her guests. The excursion train ar rived about midnight at Illinoistown just oppo site this city and it.t approach was announced by the firing of cannon, Four large steamers had been hired by the citizens here to; receive, accommodate, anti brelk , kftist the gueilaiand fer ry them across the river. This morning about right o'clock, these boats, decorated with flags and vochl-wlth bands of music, made an excur sion tip and down the river, passing the levee and giving to the passengers a view of the river in front of St. Louie. In the meantime the wild tare—infantry, artillery and cavalry—the fire companies and citizens generally had assembled to receive their visitors with becoming pomp nt the place of landing. At that point with the usual amount of exploding powder, and the usu al quantum of horns, trumpets, drums, bugles and cymbals, the reception was consummated. The streets were in a horrible enuotit i o n, ami d the city authorilies, mindful of the comfort of their weary and travel-worn friends hail provided a vast number of carriages and omnititisses, many more than were needed, to convey them comfort , ably to the place whole the dinner, the speeches and the etceteras, were to come MIT- Having a horror of crowds, prancing horses, banners, anti-fire " machines, big bands of music with touch noise. Mel prooessions in general. we dropped out of- t h e crowd and looked on from a favorable position, for the benefit of oar readers. We take no particular credit for this, on the score of self-denial, because it is pleasanter to sit in one's, own inn, than to toil in the sun, eat a cold bite, and listen to urn. Cnss administering a verbal soporific, or see S. Arnold Douglas speak in an open shirt collar and Imre arm,i, and that we believe is the order of the day. Mr. Hates, an eminent and estimable citizen of St. Louis. is, however, to make a speech of welcome and that we world like to hear and shall, if pos sible. . The procession was perhaps a mile or a mile 'rho n.snaLnr of viol tors from the east is, however, comparatively total'. The military, fire companies, German Turners, and public and private "turn oats," made up this line. We took oote °elite whole on its way to the banquet tables, some two or three miles from the city: and t hen, leaving them to their pleasures after the rains of yesterday, the railway journey and steamboat accommoda tion of last night, and the heat and mud of this morning, we walked about this city, looking at its mild . ie buildings and its private residences. its tokens of prosperity nail business. and con sidering that anon it will become under the in fluence of those free institutions which it is now stretching forward to and which another decade will see it attain. As the Democrat of this morn ing in substance remarks, it is impossible - that so thriving a city as this, which is stretching its giant arms abroad and gathering to itself the trade of all the region north, east and west, a • sits in which labor must be intelligent to he n, profitable as may he, shall long lie stifling under the incubus of servile toil. The state, with its vast preponderance of white men, so rapidly in , creating in number. cannot long hold out against tire example of this proud city. It is n hopeful sign that, in spite of "national democracy. - - which means border-rutlianism--everybotly dare Speak their sentiments here on the great question of the day, and that the St. Louis Demor,of, the organ of free labor, is daily incre.a;ing in power, ability and circulation. More anon. June Lth, (.iftrrrtoon). Gmrre.:—ln n letter this morning we hinted at mute of the proceedings in honor of the guests invited to this city. Of course you have seen iu the Cincinnati papers and received by, telegraph an account of almost every thing which has transpired worthy of note. It will be ne cessary to add but few particulars. lien. Cass and S. A. Douglas did not come here as expected; so the speaking wan done by others and doubtless as well done ns though those guns of larger bore had gone off or come on the rostrum. The place chosen for the ceremonies wan ad mirably adapted it:kite purpose. The State fair war held there last year and fur its accommoda tion, an immense circular structure with a radius of some 400 fool had been erected on it swelling mound in the midst of a grove some three miles west of the city. This exactly subserved the present purpose. Under the roof of this struc ture and at an elevation of some twelve feet from the ground the table was spread, extending just half way around the circle, antbapproacheji by Nights of steps from either side. About the enclosed circle bands of music were stationed, and fountains threw their sparkling waters into the sunny air and among the branches of the *trees, while companies of military reposed or mintruvrod on the green and men and women enjoyed the cool shade of the groves. The repast was ample, wanting neither in quantity nor quality. The tables were supplied with native wines: and for those who desired there were Inger beer and Pittsburgh and Scotch ale in abundance. There was even cold water for such as preferred it.. The hospitality of this great city certainly commended itself to all her guests. The freedom of the municipality was tendered them, and you were welcome every where at the sound of the magic words—"an invited guest." The dinner over; came, t specelitut, Mayor Ilrisnan. presiding. Charles E. Flandrau, agent for the Sioux of the MisSiusipPi. "On 'the lath .of March a band of Indians came to their residence, at Spirit Lake, lowai murdered. her husband, and took her prisoner to their camp, where she found three other white female captives—a Mrs. Thatcher, a Miss Noble and a Miss Gardner. Mrs. Marble thinki"the husbands of Mrs. Noble and Mrs. Thatcher both escaped:heing killed, but the entire family of Miss Gardner fell a prey before Miss G.'s own eyes, and then she was dragged away to the wigwam of the war chief of the red murderers. and brutally violated. Immediately after com mitting the murders at Spirit Lake, the Indians, with their captives, started westward, and trav elled for about one month through a circuit ous, rough route, unknown to any except the savage, and encamped at lust at a place called Skunk Lake, west of the Big Sioux river, and about one hundred and fifty miles northwest of Spirit Lake, where the outrages were committed. the route the captives were subjected to the severest hardships, and torture, being com pelled to carry heavy packs of shot, and to per form the most degrading set-Tice by. day, and submit to the most brutal outrages by nigla.- I•'sr the first few days of their capi4ity they re sisted their tormentors. but were beaten with clubs and threatened lobe shot until they at last syhtuitted, in the hope sooner to he rescued. "Mrs. Thatcher, who waS in feeble health, was unable to carry the burdens _lmposed upon her, and when endeavoring to cross the Big Sioux river upon some trees which the Indinns out down on both aides, to form a bridge, she, being very weak, lost her balance and fell into the river. She dropped her Burden and suc ceeded in swimming almost to the shore, when an Indian deliberately aimed his rifle at her and Sitot her through the head, killing her instantly The body was ; left to float down the current, which-was mlifened with her warm life blood. This tragic scene was hailed by the Indian wo men (who seemed jealous of the presence of the white captives) whit wild shouts of exulta tion. "Mrs. Marble informs the that she and her surviving companions read, with a dreadful err tainty, the fate which awaited them when fatigue should overtake them. Mrs. Marble had her liberty purchased by Indians who were sent out for that purpose. "On the 23d inst.. n party of friendly Lac qui Parle Indiana was despatched to Skunk Lake, with all the requirements in the shape of pre sents, to purchase the release of Mrs. Noble and Miss Gardner. Four days' travel would bring them to the camp of Ink-pa-du-tall.- ST. Lorin, June roth A Sao T.o.n.—Says the lawyer: ..A . l& . nods sometimes very nearly approach reason in their cunning. 1 got interested in the study of serpents down in Arkansas, where I spent the most of last year. I don't know why, but I was constantly watching them and testing their sagacity, by placing theta in new :situations, and surrounding them with norel expedients.— Of all kinds, I experienced most with rattle snakes and copperheathe - One afternoon I seal ed myself on a little knoll in the woods, to smoke and read—for I always had a book or newspaper with me—and had been enjoying myself for some lime, when I espied a copper head making for a hole within ten feet of where I sat. Of course I threw clown my book and cigar, and .proceeded to try a new. experiment. As noon as I stirred the rascal made a rush for the hole; hut It:aught his tail as he got nearly in, dud jerked him some twenty feet backward. Ile threw himself into n coil in no time, and waited for me to.pitch in. lint I concluded to let him try his hole again. After a while he started for It, stopping when t stirred, to coil himself hat as I kept pretty quiet, he re covered confidence nail again went in. Again I jerked him out. No sooner had he hit the ground than he made a grand rush fur the hole in a straight line fmkpy legs! But that did'ut work, for I got nut of the way, and gave him another flirt ! This time he lay still awhile, appearing to reflect on the course to be taken. After a time he tried it again, though ether slowly. After getting his head a little way in, he stopped and waggled his tail, as if on purpose for me to grab it. I aid so: and quicker than a flash he drew his head out, and came within a quarter of au inch of striking me in the face. However, I jerked him quite a distance, and re solved to look out next time. Well, he tried the Santo game again, but it would'ut work—l was too quick for him. This time he lay in a coil I half an hour, without moving. At last, how ever, he tried it once more. Ile advanced to within flee feet of the hole very slowly, coiled again, and then, by heavens! got the start of me by one of the cutest tricks you ever heard of." How was it. ?" we all exclaimed in one breath. "Why," sail the narrator, sinking his voice to the acme of solemnity, and looking as honest anti as enher as a man could look, '• Why he just turned his head toward toy hand, and went down that hole tail.first !" • Tue ADVANCED Paten or Teas.—The total export from China of teas to the tnited States, for the period betweeti the Ist ofJoly, 1858, and the Bth of -March. IOA, shows a falling off of 10;d:33,17K lbs. on the exports of the year end ing 30th June, I$ oi, with no probability of the exports being largely augmented for the period between the Nth of March tt he date of the last trade circular) and the 30th of June next. In fart it is said to be safe to estimate the addl. t tonal export of black tetts for that period at not over r,00,0011 lbs., and of greens at certainly not exceeding 3.000,000 lbs. The New York Poet uns: In this state of the supply, which must at 100,41 be over twelve million pounds short at the end of the season, consumers as well as dealers ac knowledge a higher standard of value for the fragrant herb. The advance in black term, Oolongs, since last December, has been fifteen cents per pound; and Young Ilyson teas.; of low and medium grades, have experienced an ad vance of one hundred per cent. over lam season's closing prices. A few ••lines" of Young llyson, embracing about four hundred packages, which were sold at auction in this city last November, at four cents per pot, have been resold by the purchaser at twenty-livecents. One of the dealers on Front Street has already cleared between $lOO,llOO and $200,000 by his operations in tea during the present season, It will thus-be seen that the strong and rapid advance in thetea market has been the result of a short supply and active demand; but when it is considered that we may hear at any moment of the entire suspension of shipments at Shang : hal, and, in fact, that as soon as a sufficient force from England arrives at the tuutt.of Graf all five ports of entry in China, will probably he plo-ed under strict blockade, it would not be surprising to see teas at a much higher figure than they here yet attained.
