on the credulity, the patience, and the forbear

he descants on the patriotism end chivalry of his
robber clans, and attributes to them any other
purpose, in their descent on Nicaragua, than
that of pie and plunder of the grossest and
most revolting character. Pirates and other

Bens.--On the farm of B. W. Chapman, Esq.,
near. New Cumberland, Hancock county, Vs.,
have recently been discovered immense deposits
of .Iron Ores" which from the indications
promise to be not only inexhaustable; but very
rich in • Metallic Iron.' Wo notice ono stratum of
10 inches in thieknees, known there as the —Ta

lysis, yielded 47,34 per cent. metallic iron.—
Another stratum in composed of large nodules
extewling.come 15.t0 20 feet in thickness, and a
considerable portion of which is closely imbed
ded; a specimen from ono of them boulders on
chemical analysis yielded .40,10 per cent. Metal

In connection with these ores there is found
a large stratum of “Calcareons Ore," vary valu
able ea a Flux, if not for the production of Iron.
Also a large stratum of Lime Stone—and overly
ing these is foOnd the "Cumberland Coal" seam
from 4 to & feet in thickness, the quality of
which is too well known to require comment.—

Mn. WILLIAM . /3 in his speech before the Con
vention yesterdaY, said that all the papers in the
city but one (the Chronicle) wore closed against him
for the discussion of the railroad question. So
far as the Gaulle is concerned we plead not
guilty. Mr. Williams has offered nothing for in
sertion, hero, upon that subject, since the Ga
zette came under its present control, and he has no:
reason for supposing that a refusal would have
been given him, under any circumstance!. Our
columns have always been open for the diseue
sion of all public questions, and they have
been as free to Mr. Williams as to any one else.
We feel it duo to ourselves to say this much, and
to.add that the imputation east upon us mucks
of injustice.

Tan few t Mr 111.611 at run Mon.—We find in
the Lyons the. r. of Thursday, an account of
the recent lynching of BAsurn by a Jackson
county mob of Regulators, in which paper are
also related the cause of this violence, and the
particulars of the crime with which the wretch
ed man was charged. BAROF.R, it appears by
the Mirror. went to California previous to ISA,
leaving his wife and family at home. During
his absence, his wife, so he charged, became
improperly intimate with a neighbor named
Moaners; though this charge, so industrious was
Mrs. BAGGER, and PO careful of her children,
was generally disbelieved by her neighbors.—
on his return, he treated her badly, so badly
I that she sued for and obtained a divorce; in the
decree the children were consigned to her keep
ing. One morning soon after this latter event,
Mrs. R. arose from her bed, went to the front
. door at the house in which she was living, and
was there shot dead in her tracks. A neighbor
rushed to her assistance, and saw Batmen rise
up, in a cloud of smoke, from behind a bunch
of weeds a little distance from the fence, with a
gun in hie hand, with which tho deed. was done.
Ile had evidently been lying in wait for his vic
tim, because the spot in which he was concealed
I bore the marks of an all night's occupation, and
I he had made a bole itt the fence through which
to draw sure aim. Ifs was at once arrested,
confessed the deed and was confined in jail.
The Grand Jury of Jackson county soon found
I au indictment against him. This was in Sep
tember, ISA. The rase did not come up for
trial until the next semi-annual term, then a
change of venue was taken to Clinton county,
and the trial was again postponed for six months
I
more. When the case was again called, his
counsel was sick, and n third postponement
was had. In September last the trial came on
hut the jury did not agree. It was divided: nine
for conviction and three for lequital. Another
. .
six month's delay, followed by another trial,
was the result. At the last trial, a verdict of
guilty was returned. but it aftervads appeared i
that one or two of the jury men had expressed
an upiniotr. the verdict was set aside and a new I
trial granted. Thus the matter stood nt the date
of the outrage with which this chapter opened.
The public were thoroughly convinced of his
guilt; and as his crime wa+ committed in open
day, tinder circumstances of peculiar nggrava
lion, there wm nn universal demand for his
punishment. The hanging of Gifford in the
same county, for the sante crime, by the same
men who were clamoring for Ilarger's blood,
and the subsequent organization of a Vigilance
Committee, made the storming of the Clinton
county jail, and the accomplishment of their
revenge a matter of great ease, The second
prisoner, Carld, who was taken Out with liar
;
ger, is now in the Jackson county jail at An•
drew. The committee left him with theunder
standing, that if he was convicted and h ung by
the (diem of the law, they would not inter•
fere: but if he should be acquitted, and they
remain unconvinced of his innocence, they would
hang him "any bow." It seems to us that this
lawlemness demands the interference of Gover
nor GRIMEA.—Chac4yo Trthevir.
Tue suit of Mr. A. Smith against Andrew J
Conselyen for the !eduction of nun Smith,
daughter of the plaintiff, wan yesterday conclu
ded at Brooklyn by a verdict of Ten Thousand
Dollars (the full amount claimed) for the plain
tiff. The general accord of those who listened
to the trial proclaims thin arighteoun and mann,
ry verdict. The defendant had eggravated the
baseness of his original crime by bringing for
ward a crony named If Mecca I nterritol to swear
away the good name of hie •Nictim—a device
whereby the verdict wee doubtless doubled, as
was just. Half a doxen Inuit verdicts in rapid
succession would be likely to exert some whole
some restraint on tho villianu who win the affec
tions of young and credulous girls only to work
their ruin. Judge Culver ably presided at the
