OUR 8011061 A AID 0111.11116011001.11.—.Pittsbargh
may pride herself upon—with few exoeptions—
sr fine a set of etthool buildings as coy city in
the Watt. We do not know but we might say
they are in most respects better and more con
venient, if not externally handsomer, than any in
oar many Western, cities.
For the most put the schools which they no-
croomodatonre. well conducted, we biller., and
the teachers competent to, fulfil their positions, I
generally. It is true there see some who work
meetisnicrall,y, but they are the exceptions, the I I
rule is faithfulness and spirit in teaching as far
as we hove been able to observe our visits in
various wards of the atty. We rejoice to say it.
Yet, we do believe most sincerely, that there ,
is not in this city—if there is we baronet Been
It—, single eohool which can equal the Union I
School ho Washington borough, in our 'neigh
boring county. We spent halt a day to it the
nrstof this week and were shown through : it by
Mr.- A. ht. Clow, its principal, sea of the lots
County Superintendent for Washington county.
We wish the history of that young mace efforts
, in the came of education as we heard it from
other.lips than his, could be written It would
show what may be done by persistent and ener
gotta labor In a good cense. It would tell how,
he has suotteeded in bringing together the scat
tered and aisles:ly tolling sq
eoouads of little chil
dren who were freezing or rching;er soaking
as the weatber changed, In a dozen little shan
ties, into en elegant book edifice planned in the
most convenient, sod flashed in the most sub
stantial meaner There the six or seven hundred
pupils are leaning to be useful and are becom
ing educated men sod women, an honor to tee
country. The citizens there deserve the greatest
credit for what they have done, and may Gond
der themselves fortunate in having had so ener•
gitle and cepable • men as Mr. Cow must hove
neon to accomplish what he has.
It was In that tcbool we first found •
system of gymnastics for the young chilren,
whose 'muscles an just gathering [arce dand
fibre. A system of exercise has been adopted
calculated to develops the mutates of the chest,
book, legs and orate; the child is taught to walk
erect, step firmly, to move hle limbs freely,_made
to breathe puretdr; not suffered to 'sit in a hot
room during hid study hours, but in one prop-' .
erly tempered. We found in every department
..at the school the most exact order, and the most
cheerful obedience, without • shade of fear or
favor. We had many other (hinge to say about
that school but cur epos prohibits at present.
