Mon —Yesterday afternoon the arguments of

Immediately after the rendition of the unite,

somewhat excited and manifested a desire to
satiety themselves-with executing summary ven

were improperly acquitted. Arriving In front
of the jail., they were met at the gate by the
Chief of the Police and a body of his mite, who
resisted their attempt to enter. By nightfall the
multitude bad greatly ',welled in numbers, and
the excitement wan muifeetly increasing. The
mejority of the persona present, however. ap
peared to be meetly spectator', taking no part
in the disturbance. Appeals were made of a
highly inflammatory nature, nod the indignation
of the people was naturally hightened. Finally
a desperate onslaught was made, the prison
fence was broken, and the large crowd rushed
to - the door. &Teri% chute wore fired, and the
force within returned by the discharge of blank
cartridges. This firm resistance further mad
dened the already kiforiated mob. A party of
men and boys forced en entrance into the build
log where the artillery] la kept, and, procuring a
cannon, heavily loaded it with every description
of deadly missiles. This was panted within a
few feet of the prison door, which woe already
battered down, and the windows broken In.—
I Threats were made to discharge the Guinan into
the small ante chamber where Mr Thomas,
the jailor, and his del:ditto,' Mayor Pitcher, and
abort. twenty policemen, were stationed.
Farther resistance would have been utterly
futile, and at the Imminent peril of the life of
every one of the gentlemen who were attempting
to defend the prison.
Three of the prinners being delivered top, a
razor was given to the fourth in the jilt, (Jack,

nessed than the dead body when it was brought
to the yard and exposed to the view of the
crowd. Ropes were obtained, and the other ne
groes marched off to the Court Rouse square.
At the west end, George, the drive of lir. Bam•

and execrations of the multitude The other
two were then marched through the equate, and
near Fifth street were likewise executed. One

others oonfessed their guilt.
Fires were kindled under the suspended bod
ies, but they were not col:teamed. Large nom.
hers of persons lingered about the scene of this
awful tragedy loan a late hour, and it was the
universal topic of conversation. The excitement
in some degree subsided, and the turbulence
gave way to a feeling of silent horror at the ter
rible atones that were witaessed- The rioters
themselves having wreaked their vengeance
upon the victims, appeared to be more awe

Mayor Pitcher attempted to Jam the mob, and
was outrageously assaulted, receiving a

had one of his angers shot off. We heard of no
