be the extent of that ;Meet, and how we are
fatal escape from it ars problems which no one
ball yet ventured to solos. The revelations of
Seta made by lodge Drummond, of the hostile
attitude to the government which the • Mormons
sow occupy leave no room to doubt that they
ate ready to cope with us in a trial of etrengtb,
and that the administration, it It here any care
or respect for the tuitional boner, cannot long
avoid the conflict that has been Invited. What
coarse is to be panned towards -them has not
yet been indicated& to the meantime we ask at
tention to the following statement, which we
quote from the National InteUigasexr.. It was
oommunicated to that paper by a gentleman who
has resided In Utah far some time, and who is
well Versed in its history. The Intaiirlicer
vouches for his credibility: •
The Mormon priesthood is a consolidated sys
tem of police, compounded from the old dart:ni
de, Levitical, and bleichisedeck priesthoods,
and is known by the name of "The Church of
the Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ." Brig
ham Young is the Prophet, Priest, and King of
the Saints. His will is law; he is the ticege: cat
of God, deriving authority directly from Him,
which Is animus whenever he says "thus saith
the Lord." Brigham stands upon the ohonlders
of his two councillors ; they stand npon the
shoulders of the other ten apostles; they stand
upon the shoulders of the high private; they
stand upon the shoulders of.the bishops; they
stand upon the shoulders of the captains of Mee
and seventies they stand upon the shoulders of
elders; they stand upon the shoulders, of the lay
members of the church; they stand upon the
shoulder' of the laboring mama who till the
toll which supports the pito. Trouble towering
height Brigham issues forth his edicts to the
people, and with the scorpion hob of his ear
pent tongue he lashes every one into silence.—
"No ons was cur }mem to dissect) rom hie wit."
The entire fraternity is bound together by oaths
the most solemn to support the church and noth
ing but the church, and every man, woman, end
child is constituted a police oilier, always on
duty, and required to report to the head when
ever anything of sufficient Interest:occors ,to
jnstify It. From this you will not fall to per
ceive that the church form is hut a closely com
pacted system of police, having a head from
which it derives all power, and a body forming a
nucleus around which are gathering the Ignorant,
the superstition, the bigot, the outlaw, and the
disaffeotal of all countries in the world, who are
taking refuge, as they suppose under the wings
of the ;ingot of the last dispeniation. However
deluded the great mass' of their followere may
be, the leaden are not deluded, but are knaves
from choice, wilfully misleading the masses for
the purpose of obtaining and wielding power,
boldly predicting the overthrow of the Republic,
when they will resume tbo reins of Government
and proclaim Mormonism to the benighted na
tions of the world.
The entire male population of the State are
enrolled In the militia, who are tinder weekly
(some daily) military drill, every one of whom,
from the boy of twelve #o the man of eighty
years, is required to keep on hand one hundred
rotmde of cartridges, one gun or rifle, one or
more pistols, awards, sabres, knives, &n., all
he can obtain; and thee, in the event of war,
the women and children are to fight with what
ever weapon they can command. Now, when
we consider their location, a thousand miles in
land on every tilde in the mountain fastnesses of
the continent; their numbers, which, according
to Chief Justice DRUMMOND, 'are one hundred
thousand in the Territory, and two hundred
thousand in surrounding Btates and Territories;
their appliances of war; their secret agents in
every nook and corner of the Republic; their
emlsearies among every Indian tribe on the con.
tinent, teaching them "the mechanic arts and
military tactics," they amount to something
more than we have been accustomed to regard
them. They have settlements on Salmon River,
Oregon Territory, and on Lewis River, near
Puget Sound, in Washingtod Territory, and la
CarnowYalley and at Banpornardine, Califor•
nia. They instigated the Indians to revolt In
Oregon and Washington Territorirq in the late
war, and were, in my judgcsi the cause that
created the necessity for one proclamation of
martial law by Governor Eiravirts; and when the
Governor forwarded a supply train of goods up
to audio? the Fos Permit& payment of debts con
tracted with them when returning from treating
with the Illsekfeet or Crows, in the winter. of
1855-'B, on the arrival of the train at Colonel
Csath's the 'lndian agency for the Net l'erces,
they had been induced to favor Rost wt-sea t the
Yakima war chief, refused to receive the goods
either In payment of debts or at presents, and
ordered all the whites to leave the country. CoL
Cnam, am Indian Agent, was retained in case
of need; the train returned hastily to the Dallas;

Throughout the Stotts and Territories, at va,
Sons and eotiveniant Icestitles, the Mormons
have what are termed "Stakes in Zion," and
each stake la governed by a presidency. It may
not be known to many that there is a Sake in the
city of Now York, whose president le editor of
a paper called The Norms; at Council Bluffs is
another stake and another paper; at Indepen
dence another stake; at St. Louie, ko. Their
agents and spiee are in every city of the Union,
adapting themselves to surrounding oirotim
stances, bating the ignorant and nueuspeotlng
Into their mashes; eitorotly denouncing Individu
als whom they Inspect capable of informing
against them; pursuing their victims with a
'pertinacity that overcomes all obstaolee; and
their agent In Congress keeps them constantly
advised of the policy and alms of the General
Government. They are in the frontier post of ,
hoes either by appointment se postmutere or
as clerks, and have the opportunity of sapervie
lug the transit and distribution of all mall mat
ter; and it may riot be improbable that to Chia
coarse may be traced the loss of so many letters
going to and coming from the Pacific Territo
ries.
Now, In view of the fact, herein set forth,
and the assumption of Chief Justice DZITXXOID
that they-are a hundred thousand strong In
Utak and two hundred thousand spies and emis
saries in adjoining States mid Territories, with
every facility for obtaining and transmitting in
formation; allied to a savage Indian • horde of
three hundred thousand more, who are, in their
hands, tho "battle-axe of the Lord," to be

sand miles of lend travel, p rairie and mountain,
with natural means at hand to throw every ob..
staple in the way of an army, by running off
their animals, cutting off email parties, poison
ing the springs of water, and blockading the
canons and mountain panes; I repeat, in - view
of all these facts staring no boldly in the face,
they form au abstoole tonal' peaceful settlement
of the interior of the country of no mean•
character, and which should be promptly met by
the General Government.

and, we had almost said, of morale, different
from those of Washington or Adams, gives this
