new ordinance for the assessment of water rents,
under'auttimity granted by an art of essembly
recently passed. The Councils ordered the or

mon Cannella of the city of Pittsburgh to anew ,
meter rents," the Councils aforesaid have power

—Early o‘, Monday morning, word was brought
to town, by Mr. Archibald Allison, that Samuel
R. 'White bad been brutally murdered at his res
idence, is Mutters, to wnship, on the road lead
ing from Washington to Steubenville, about five
miles north of tile place.
We repaired to the scene at an early boor and
there met with a horrible spectacle. On enter•
ing the house we found the murdered. man in
bed, just as he had been sleeping—for it Is er n
dent that he made no attempt to get p—the
pillow and upper put of the bed was covered
with blood, while his fee* and heed were so die.

the deceased; have resided in this house four
weeks nest Wednesday; husband bought it from
James Allison; came here from three miles be
low Venice; my husband was 25 years old last

morning, I did not feel very well, got tip and
went into the kitchen; In a few tabintee heard •

Thursday in Washington; Lindsay paid the mon
ey to hire, and:he brought it home; It was dark

and wore black hats; am certain there were two
of them; the axes were generally loft it the wood I

Dr. John W. Withal, sworn—We found the
skull broken and depreesed over each eyebrow;
the tones of the nose were broken; the lower
jaw was also broken; on the top of the head, on
the left side, ware two email cote, from one of
which we took ant a small piece of the outer
plate of the bone; the eats do not seem to be
clean; the woundir were inflicted with some
blast instrument, Sub as the poll cf an tele;
either of the woollen' over the eyebrows wan
sufficient to destroy life; no marks about the
body elsewhere; saw no evidence of a straggle;
supposed the deceased was killed instantly; think
he might bare been lying with his fare 'to the
wall and turned it partly around.
The jury teemed a verdict in accordance
with the facts given shore.
Isis not certainly known what amount of
money has been taken. Mr. White was a young
man, ranch esteemed in the neighborhood where
he came front, and his untimely end will be re
gretted by a large number of friends. He

deplore their toes. He had but nuttily' per
chested the farm, on whirl he resided, and the
narderwrierere no doubt instigated to the com
mission of the .deed with the sapppatition that

untamed to pay a fine of Gi cents and the costs

with keeping a disorderly house, to the Eighth
Ward, disturbing therneighbore, dm. There was
no eridence to prove the offence charged, how
ever, and the case was dismissed.
