TOIINAGO Tax.---The Jcurnal of thl.sciti
having alleged that the Pearl Mill, in Allegheny;

count of the oppressive operation of the Tow'

log reply has been called out from one, of the
proprietors of that establishment. The facto
presented by Mr. Bryan are so pertinent and
bear eo irresistibly against the empty clamor got

we cheerfully give place to hie letter, mid com

A WORD IN =PLANATION.
R. M. Brants, Bog —Dear Sir:—Without
wishing to express an opinion on the eubjeet•
matter of the article on the Tonnage Tea copied
from the North Antericin, in your paper of
Tuesday last, I desire simply to offer a word of
explanation in correction of an error in it, and
in your remarks introducing it, in relation to the
"Pearl Steam Mill." -
You are doubtless correct in assuming that
the "Pearl Steam• Mill" is the establishment re
ferred to by the writer of the article.
The North Ante eon writer says:
"A largo flouring establishment in Pittsburgh,
failed, because, though satisfied to msko thirty
five dollars a day by very smell profits and a
very extensive business, the Pennsylianks Rail
road Company could not afford to carry at rates
which would enable the mill to make even these
Mall profits; for they themselves would have to
pay to the State upon the flour they transpotted
a tonnage tax of seventy dollars a day.
In your prefatory remarks you say:
"The Impediment to their continuance of it
(the milling buelnes9 was °laxity, if not wholly,
the tonnage tax of ten cent. per barrel on their
flour, witlab the State of Pennsylvania imposes;
and the Pennsylvania Railroad reqaired the pro
prlotors of the Pearl Mills to pay."
Tho error I wish to rectify is contained In
these two extracts:
