"This hilt would seam to stand as that wbere• I

while directly opposite, on the Monongahe

the mime height and appearance, known by the
name of Ayres' hill, eo called from a Hellish engi..

on which the town la , built. The hilt has been
cultivated on the summit by a Highland regi
ment, who built upon it, though the buildings
are now gone, and the brow at the hill is mill
covered with wood.
"Front Ayreo' hill issue devetsl fountains,
failing chiefly toward the north, into a small
brook, which Increasing, encircle, the foot of

greatly struck on a summer morning, Mewing
from the ground the early vapor rising from the
riser. It hung midway between the foot and•

"It may be here observed, that at the ions
nor. of these two rivers, until eight o'clock of
seentece mornings, a light fog is usually incum
bent: but It is of a eslatery nature, Inasmuch as
it consists of vapor net exhaled from stagnant
water, but which the sno of the preceding day I
had extracted from trees and flowers, and io the
evening had sent back in dew, so that rising

"The town or Pittsburgh, as at present built,
Mends chiefly on what Is called the third bank;'
that is the third rising of the ground above the

Hie morbid parsimony not only adhered to him

house for him on starvation board and wages for
many years. Ho left bat a miserable .pittance
to his men servant, and only 5600. .to. ide
nephews, who were his nearest . .relativea; and
poor. Only two or three weeks before death,
he called his old housekeeper. to hie bedside to
say that as milk had rhea to eight. cents aquae,
they must take but a pint for the future. Ho
left quite a number of poor relations, whom a
small bequest would have made comfortable. Ho

"Lawn's STEATAGInt."—The Shippensburg
(Pa.) Democrat relateo a pretty _ little romance
of real life, the parties In which are young

en attachment for two maidens in their father
land, and desired to marry. The .youttg.women
reciprocated the tender regard; and wore willing
to marry the swain,. -Bat the parents ware
not satisfied with the standing of their <hush

agreed between the parties that the young men

to pay the fare of their sweethearts, and then
send for them, the girls agreeing, faithfully to
follow their lovers. — The young mon toned em

and last fall sent for their betrbtbed. They
came, promptly, without tho consent or itnowl•

clasped in their lovers' arms, as they descended
from the care at the Shippcnshurg depot.

and at St Louie, Memphis, and other points on
the Mississippi, suspension bridges are deroand

earnestly agitating for their erection; but to
achieve the latter would coat enormanS sums of
money, and to wade through the tedious litiga
