EMANCIPATION IN MIMI/Pl.—A remarkable
incident °courted in the Missouri Legislature
last week. Mr. Palm, of St. Louis, was run as
a candidato for Director of the Dank of the
State. It was stated, by one of the members,
that ho woe on avowed Emancipationist, and
the gentleman who nominated him, declared he
knew' such to be the fact.
This gave tied to, an animated debate, and
caused the prosantatibti) of a pro•Biaxry can
didato in opposition to Mr. Palm. Mr. Brown,
a member from St. 'Louie, declared himself a
free-eoller, though opposed, on personal grounds
to the nominee. Mr. Clover, from the name
city, gild openly, that be was an emanelpation
leb cod thet the question'tranecended all other
nines. Leading pro•Slaeery democrats rallied,
and notice pro-Slarery , whip combined with
them to defeat Mr. ,Palm, but in vain. Ilt mat
elected.
Thent. Lenin Democrat, from which we take
these incidents, says:
Thelncident, we take it, is of the utmost
portanoe all an index of public feeling on the
slavery question in this State. The "National
Democrate" voted for the acknowledged emanol
patloaist, becense be was nominated in caucus,
and his hostility to Benton and Malt couched
for by the gentleman Who nahered hie name In
to. State notoriety. iVe, therefore, make no
violent interference, when. we proclaim that as
patties aro now organised, the great queetion of
the emancipation of pogrom' is cot a test queee
tion in time( them—the Democrats and National
Demoorate. Of coarse we do not go so far as to
say, that every man who voted for Palm is an
emancipationist, nor do we esy that every
emancipationist in the Legislature voted for that
individual; bet we draw the inference- that the
party which elected hito ie not unfavorable to
emaneipation, and that the ,party which ap
plauded Clover's speech Is favorable to it.
Henceforward a man may be trusted and an
honored National Democrat, although he le an
emantipationist, and In the party with which
this journalls identified—the Democratic patty
—a man will be trusted and honored because ho
is an emancipetiontst. If the doctrine of eman.
cipatiou be no defect in the National Democrat,
it le a virtue in the True Democrat. The Na
tional Democrats tolerate it, our party approve
of It.
Emancipation is thus an opon question in
Missouri. Hitherto, soya , the Democrat, the
principle of Pree•Soll, which means the conser
vation of Freedom, rerietaace to the emetrion
of starerg, has beta atigmatited '111 . 3 a heresy; but
now by toe power of the press, by silent appeal,
by reasoning, by the 'Workings Of Jostles and of
chriatianity, Slavery , Propagandism is met, and
wilt be overcome to Itilesouri.
