Gov. Weiner ON nOntOnlnTnl;•—Governor Jo.
Weight, of Indians, has recently Bet up almost
as many p: dentiens to the character of a learn
ed ngriculturlet es to that of an astute
He has been the President of the Indiana State
Agricultural Association, sod has boon making
grandiloquent epeeobes in various place's upon
agriculture, in some of which' he Intrpduced
most eradiate , lieNtnatiOns epos "rmts and tape.'
The following cruel stories of the. Governor's
practical knowledge on agricultural subjects ore
published by the. Wabash Expreee. We are in
clined to think that the Governor to to humbug
In agriculture, Ina that he knows still less es a
politician:
Jon Wright—we beg Ms pardon—the Eon.
Joseph A. Wright, oar present worthy Executive
and Senatorial aspirant, leper excellence the rigs
riot:Mural Governor of Indiana. He is wonder
fully faipillar with farmers' lore—a second poor
Richud la the economy of husbandry. Re will
&coulee with oracular wisdom about solLe and
subsoils, rotation, draining, crooning, seedings,
'root, and tops,' and every other possible topic
conneoted with plain or fancy farming.
Ile knows at eight whether a nevi:gem of to
plow is practical; and is altogether au fen in
-diming machines, reefers, planters, rollers,
and agricultural implements generally. In fact,
when the Governor dies (Seree'm eel= mien;
dings* +cuts iaterairpopglol) it will be a question
what niche in the modern Pantheon be ghat' oe
eupy—whsther his statute ehall be placed upon
the 'Democratic Platform' or in the 'Agricultural
Department.'
With a view to the elucidation of this eubjeot
we wish to preserve the following authentic
anecdotes:
• Not many springs ago, His Excellency, in com
pany with another distinguished eitiesnof
Indi
eae, won riding in the country. In pasting a
beautiful field of grain just beginning to head,
the Governor reined up his horse and beret into
rapturous admiration of the wheat..
tooth Ned—'Governor, how math: will that
wheat yield to the acre?'
'Oh, from seventeen to twenty bushels.'
'What kind of seed le that from, Governor?'
'Common winter. That Is the beet for this
eolL'
'Yon aro the President ofthe Ind Lana, Agrical
tarsi Society, are you not, Governor?' • _
I am, sir.'
'Delivered the address before the Agricultural
Society of New York, last year?'
'Yes, sir.'
'Yon are the anther of an eloquent pctoage
about the cultivation of tome sad tops?'
'A mere trifle, Ned.'
'Well, you see tho only ass I ever saw who
could not tall outefroin
A certain farmer, ono of the Governor's con
stituents, who had a profound admiration for his
talents and practical knowledge, wrote to him
for advice as to the beet method of improving
his stock of cheep. The Governor's answer was
instant, brief,' sententious, sincere: 'Get a Hy
dnnaie Rant—better than the sonthdown for
mutton, equal to the merino for wool.'
The Express aids: 'lf this doesn't Bottle the
question, we have a pumpkin story in reserve
that may cast some light upon it.'
Wairna on nu Lan. Leas—Walker, the re
doubtable filibuster, has been on his Met loge for
a month past, bat ;till holds out against hie ene-
Mire with a pertinacity and power of endurance
worthy of a more honorable cause. By a pre
vious arrived, it was shown that the beet portion
of hie troops were abut up in a church in Gre
eds, and Walker himself was performing certain
aquatics movements in the Lake, in the hope of

and being arker than the Deehrtanaa. They
held their omen in high estimation, and many

while a Seehuana swore by his father, these no

related several amusing instances to chow the
high estimation in which them tribes hold their

and his roan had always been kindly treated by
the "fair" eez.
The country in most parts abounded with ele

A Noma Pe.—Me. Buchanan, the gossip
tells at, will write bin Inaugural with an eagle
quill, not plucked by man from the wing, but
the free gift of our national 'bird. It appears
that Senator Brown, of hlissiselppl, was pro
claiming the curtain citation of Mr. Buchanan,
when a feather dropped at his feet, from the
wing of an eagle that was flying over. The gen
tleman preserved the quill and had it forwarded
to Mr. Buchanan.
It is a great pity to spoil so romantic a story,
but as this is a prosals age, and we have to do
with matter of fact people, we venture to give,
on good authority, the fo llowing version of the
manner in which this particular eagle's feather
was actually procured, and the keen and somas
tie remark its propoeed we elicited from a Re
publican Senator.
Senator Brown was visiting a friend in the
vicinity of Washington, who bas in a cage a fine
bald eagle. While his friend was exhibiting it
to his guest, the imprisonedthird dropped from
his wing a feather, which Senator Brown picked
up, exclaiming he would forward it as a present
to Mr. Buchanan. On his return to Washington,
he met Mr. Seward, and, after relating the 'poi
dent, told him he intended to eend this feather
from an eagle's wing to the President elect, that.
he might appropriately make use of it in wri
ting his inaugural address. Olampbr responded
Seward quietly, in his dry way—'An Eagle—a
caged Eagle; a Slave Eagle!'
What a world of meaning Is couched In those
few bur eignifloont words, and how completely
they destroy all the romance concerning the
! eagte'e feather.—Baltnnori Patriot, Jan. 10.
