constitutes tho'greatnesa of an Intelligent peo

to Kansas :
During the plat summer, it was reported and
generally believed, that the President of the
United States only failed to interpose hie author
ity far the protection of the rights of the Free
State people in Kansas for the reason that no'
official intelligence had reached him that any
outrages had been perpetrated in that unfortu

I cotmeind it to ho my duty to notify the Priai
deit of the. crimes that had been committed
against tho persons and property of farmer citi

tection which the federal government wee in

Accordingly, on the 28th of August last, I
addieued him a letter on this subjact, a copy of
which I herewith transmit. Without desiring to
forestall the opinion or notion of the General
Asiembly in this regard, I beg leave to reiterate
the opinion then expressed, that it is the right
and duty of the State to protect the rights of
her former citizens in Kansas, when federal
government falls to perform that duty.
I desire to co-operate, with the General As

ms tend to uphold the sovereignty and pro

indite Mr.. Sumner to resign his seat in the
present Congress - and then to elect Governor
Gardner for the remnant of the term; Mr. Bum-,
ner of wares to be elected for the next NB
term of six years. The argument for this Is,
that Mr. Sumner will be unable to take his' seat
this winter, that It should be occupied by some
body, that patting do , . biidner into It will
gratify his desire to be in the UnitedEltates
Senate if even but fore month, and that it will
take him out of the Governor's chair, making
Meat Governor Benchley acting Governor for
the remainder of the year, and leave a clear
field far the succession next fall. •It will also
make Governor Gardner a prominent candidate
for Mr. Bumner's full should be he obliged
to resignthat next year.

Chrietian - Union of Now York, has .been labor
ing in our city about three years among its
Catholi population, with untiring seal and en
ergy. Two years ago ho established a Mission
Sabbath School in Hardeorable under very un
favorable circumstances, but relying for enppork .
on Rim whose promises are ever sure, the pro
ject succeeded beyond the most- sanguine ex
peotations. From Ilardscrabble the newel was
removed to the Independent Welsh Chard ou
Roes street, from which it was removed to
Pennsylvania Avenue, opposite Tunnel etreel;
where an organization was effected under the
name of the "Sinclair Sabbath School," since
which time it is hoe been in a flourishing con
dition, now numbering some eighty soholers and
ten, or twelve teachers.
Ecoently, Father Sipalair has organized a
sewing school, In the school room, which has foe.
its object the instruction of the female malaise's in
the art of sewing. The meetings are to beheld
each Thursday afternoon at two o'clock, the
first of which was held on last Thursday, (4th
inat.,) when Mrs. George F. Gilmore was oho
eon Directress. There wore present some fifty
pupils, and some ten or twelve teachers. The
Society has started under very favorable auspi
ces, and we hope a chrlstian public will sustain
it. Father Sinclair requests En to say that old
garments or remnants of cloth or calico will be
thankfully received It seat to the residence of
the Direeteress, Mrs. Gilmore, corner of Tunnel
street and Cherry Alley, to the school on Thurs
day afternoon at two o'clock, or to his residence
on Robinson street, opposite the Eagle Cotton
Factory, Allegheny City. We are aware that in
a city like ours there aro many objects oft:her
Ity, but remember that charity “Beareth all
thiegv, believeth all things, hopeth all things,
oodoreth all things," and that "he that giveth to
the poor lendeth to the Lord," and we think that
you will remember the Sewing School.
