The number of Bogs which have as yet arrived In this city and vicinity is pot large; but as coon as the 80a. eon fully opens ( the indicationa are that the ar rivals will be hsiory, as the flogs are already very fat, and the - proaent oorreot rates for Pork renders the hiding of corn to them a losing business; henoedt is presumed there will be a won disposition to dispose of Hogs as soon to possible. There seems to be little or no demand for new meat, and the market has not been so free from speoulation or even an ordinary demand at this season, for several years. New, Mese Pork has been Bold at $15,60, we understand, for delivery within the present coming week, and even at this' rate the demandseems to bo only moderato. In Louisville we notice Hogs are dull at $5,50, not and in St. Louis at $5,25. From private lettere' from New Orleans and fit Louis, we learn thatl the stook of old meat in the latter place is equal to 4,000 Ithdli, and the former 5,500 Ws. Town send, Who was sentenced to two years in, the Delaware State prison, at New Castle, for rob bing the post office at Wilmingtoo, DeL,.his succeeded, as already stated, in broaking, jail again. This In the fourth time he has escaped from this prison. The first time, while in pri eon waiting his trial, he broke jail and let out three other prisoners; on the same night there wore sotoe six or seven stores broken into In Wilmington. Shortly after this escape Town send was recognized and arrested in Philadel phia, and a portion of the goods taken from the stores were found on his parson; he also had on his person five pistols, heavily loaded, and a large,dirk-knlfe. In a few days atter he was lodged In the old quarteni he again escaped from his cell, and bad reached th e top of the, wall, and was in the not ofjumphig down on the outside when be was discovered by the sheriff; the sheriff fired at him and ho was captured.— Shortly after this second attempt to escape his trial came on. Before he was_ sentenced he , made a strong appeal to the court of clemency, that be was sorry for what ho had done, would reform, &o. • About a mouth after he was sentenced he Made has third escaped from the prison; this time be' let out lwo other prisoners:with him; and on this earns night the pest office at Wilmington was robbed: This time he was recognized by the the conductor, while in the cars between Wil mington and Chester. The conductor looked both ends of the oar, and whcn they reached Chester an officer was procured and Townsend was. again arrested. One of the persons he had lot out of prison, named "Oyster Charley," was ' with him in the ear, and he was also arrested.-- I Townsend was taken back to the prison, and this time, to snake sure of him, he was put in double Irons, which means handcuffs and hobbles or leg irons. He was - then looked in his colt and closely watched. Notwithstanding all this precaution, be &gained effected another and a fourth escape on Friday night last. This time he had filed or flawed off his handcuffs and leg-irons, and cut ting a hole, through the oak floor of his cell, he descended into a room below, from there he got into the prison yard, and then 'scaled the wall, which is about twenty feet high. His feats will rival those of Jack Sheppard or Sixteen String Jack. He is certainly the moat successful jail-breaker this country has produced, and while he is now at large, will ne denbt improve An his past experience.
