repair. The net amount that had accrued . 0 t o
the let of August, 1856, was about sB7,owa,
whereupon the canal was closed and a thorough
repair commenced.
Tho canal has been In use a plaster of a cen
tury, and this is the first effectual cleaning it
has ever had. It Is not surprising, therefore,
that in some placee the bones stone, broken
wheel-timbers, sand, etc-, had accumulated to a
depth of four feet. It was generally found
about three feet. The aide ledgan of atone, from
four to eight feet in vortical thiclutear, and peer
jecting from NU to twelve feet within the Linea
of the canal, have now been blasted off and re
moved, leaving the walls perpendicular to the
base line and making the narrow passes from ten
to twelve feet wider. Two speaker; basins
have been completed, by the use of which boak
meeting may pass each other. This is a most
valuable improvement, as it will prevent the
vexatious delays to which boats have so long
been subjected. The lochs havebeen thoroughly
repaired. A side wall of one of them ban. been
entirely rebuilt with new =weary. A strong
guard.gate has been built near the head of the
canal, by which the water can hereafter be shut
off at any moment The defective elope pave
ments have been enbstantially repaired. Some
of them have been replaced wah new masonry;
and the clone bridge, that abomination in the
eight of all steamboatmen, has been taken down
and removed and a pivot bridge, to replace it, Is
