Le" Tho following letter takos back all that
McMaster over tried to say about Col. Fremont.
Road it and learn how tziono a thing a man Is
capable of doing to compass political ends:
ittete the Clotatnerelal A&,ettleer.
On tho sth of last September, In ropy tq an
objectionable demand, I wrote a letter to a resi
dent of Ohio, in which the assertion is mode that
Mr. Fremont had "prefessod to be a Catholic,"
had "given himself out ass Catholic," and that,
if ho denied that fact under his own name, I
would prove hia denial a falsehood.
That tho religious test exists among us, is evi
denced by tho fact of the collateral lane upon

professions. f" have, however, steadily main
tained that that issue ought cot. to exist; that it
'is un-American and unjust. In the letter refer

daring that "the religion of Mr. Fremont, if be
has any, has nothing to do with his claims for
°Moo" In The Freeman's Journal of Sept, 18,
two weeks previous to the publication of my
letter, it is raid to be the "real American prin

which he ought to embroil to que s tioning." In
the samejocumal (and still prior to the publication
of my plinth letter); I mad, "To be of the
Protestant, or of the Catholic religion—or to be
of none—or to have changed from Protestant to
Cattail°, or from Catholic to Protestant, is not
to be admitted as any political test in this count

distant State, in reply to a prints letter, to
throw a bone to the ban-dogs of the political

with their clamor, My friends, moreover, rep
resent to the that, in the Interim of a month
front the date of my letter, several respectable
persons, some of them more directly engaged
than myself to political life, have offered, or
made, the Identical issue with my own. It In

that paper, of oral and documentary evidence of
Col. Fremont's baring been In the commuri.on of

needlessly furnishing campaign documents for

more no, that my letter was not eddreenotto the

off-hand idyl° alone demonstrates. Twenty.one

it then did by • breech of propriety. Coming

Col. Fremont have charged him with haring
compromised the dignity of his station when
Berator, by dealing Senator Foote a blow, and
thus attacking the freedom of debste. senator
Foote, who to now taking an active interest in
California in taror of hir: Fillmore, hen had the
manliness to make a public statement, over his
own name, in the San Francisco Chronicle, de
nying that he was struck by Colonel Fremont.
and exonerating him, from all blame what
ever. The close of this statement is asfollows:
it is not true that CoL Fremont pranonneed,
on the floor of the Senate, anything that had
fallen from me in the coarse of debate to be
false. And, although it is true that he WAS die
satisfied with what I had said In opposition to
his bill for the settlement of land titles in Cali
fornia, and requested a special personal inter
view with me on the subject in the progress of
which he used language which I deemed it my
duty to resent, and did resent; yet, it is not true
that Col. Fremont nwllaed on that creation the
Lunt personal indignity on me. The only blow
struck was one, for which lam atone responsible;
for before'he had time to return the blow re
ceived by himself, Senators Mangum and Clarks
Intervened and separated no.
Col. Fremonffe note to me afterwards, was of
rather equivocal character. - His 'friend, the
present Governor of New Jersey, who was the
beaqr of it, assured me that it was not designed
so althallenge to the field of himer; but, sup
posing that it was at least possible that Mr.
Price was la error on his part, I wrote to Col.
Fremont, that if my note of explanation did not
prove eatisfartery, Lehould go without delay to
the pity of Baltimore, And send him my accept
ance from. thence. At this stage of the affair,
friends interposed, and the difficulty was settled,
es I have always considered, in a manner credit;
able to both parties.
I cannot close without the expression of my
regret that any attempt should be made in con
nection with this transaction, to hold Col. Fre
mont responsible for conduct calculated to in
fringe upon tho freodon of debate in the Milted
States Senate. However, opposed as I yet am
to the measure advocated by him for the eettle
moat of the land titles In California, and how
ever much I am opposed to _his election to the
Presidential office, I feel - in justice bound to de
clare, that I have been disposed to complaim
seriously of his oondact in the affair referred to;
and that there is nothing in it that should la the
least degree lumen hie claims to the respect and
confidence of his political friends and aupport
ere. What is raid in the article cited above
about my age, my gray hairs, &0., is simply ri
dlanloue, se I was in 1850, only forty-six years
of age, and am yet sufficiently halo one vigorous
to defend my portion and maintain my rights

111n_ Finatotia.—ln a private letter received
a few days ago, from Mr. Fillmore, by a gentle
man of Georgia, the following . characteristic lan
guage occurs:
"Whatever may be my fate,
Personally, 4 not
worth e thought, if the integrity of the Condi
tution can be maintained, and we eau traoemit
this glorious heritage unimpaired to our poiter-

We presume the meaning of this-Ls that Mr.
Fillmore is ready to sacrifice himself to 'erasion
with the Buchanan party, if it should be thoight
necream by the proslaver,y interest'', in order
to defeat Fremont.
A count sronnstrr of the New Brieatm Delta,
writing from Richmond, Va., is much disturbed

the recent speech uf Hon. John M. Botts, which

to hear men in this city . stand up boldly and

make no secret of their preference for him over
